How clear is the water in the lakes you guys are fishing with these hot dogs? Why doesn't someone try bacon? I've caught pretty much every fish that swims on bacon during open water. Perch, gills, tons of bass, catfish, and even a pike. But I think we better be careful feeding these fish all this people food. Pretty soon they won't even touch a sucker minnow. Ever try feeding your dog dry food after feeding him steak for a week?

Serious question:  Is that bacon cooked or raw?

Raw, I don't think it would make it to the water if it were cooked.

If your panfishing, I'd use a piece of the fat, not the meat. Just make sure you take it all the way off when you're done fishing otherwise you'll never get it off the hook. Trust me on that one. I'd say a small pair of scissors would do the trick.

I know this sounds way out there but hot dogs do really work !
try it sometime . Think about it pike work on smell and taste and a hot dog is full of oils for that predatory sense of smell and taste to kick in

Do you guys like to use a hole hotdog or do you like to split it in half so the oils really leak out?
I bet those foot long hot dogs would work well as would smokies. ;D

As a live bait fisherman, I have decided to try this. This weekend I will be setting 2 tipups with live minnows, and 2 with hot dogs. 1 of each shallow, 1 of each deep. We will see what the verdict is on the hot dog story.

"I fish because I love to; because I love the environs where trout are found, because I suspect that men are going along this way for the last time, and I  don't want to waste the trip; maybe one day I will catch a mermaid; and finally, not because I regard fishing as being so terribly important, but because I suspect that so m

I don't know about hot dogs, but at a camp next to my buddies on the St. Lawrence River something ate a chihuahua that was swimming off their dock.  A swoosh and whirlpool and the dog was gone...... :'(

Maybe if you stick little rubber legs on the hotdog.....

Holly Molly that is horrible, I can't imagine that. :-[
That must have been one monster pike or musky. Do sharks ever enter the river?
A hotdog with rubber legs is a good idea may have to try it, I am alway game for something new to try. :D

Well I've been following this post for a while now.And have always leaned toward the premise that hot dogs might just work; given the voratious appetite of pike....  well past two fridays have put ONE tip-up out w hot dog. at schroon lake. Results...Nothing  :( .though we were not in pike waters and with 25 tip-ups out varying depth from 8 FOW to 65 FOW no pike at all. I will continue to put one hot dog out with each outing through rest of season. HOT DIGGITY DOG !!!

bwalleye, you wouldn't happen to know the color of the chihuahua would you. Need to tie some big flies for toothy critters :roflmao: for open water.

Honestly dont really know. first time ever up there was 3 weeks ago. fishing deep water for salmon and lakers. Ive been told north end and narrows can easily produce 20 # pike. Next time up there im sticking to the shallow water specifically targeting the big pigs!
