I typically use one spike per hook with trebles and one to two on a single hook. I recently watched a promo vid on Lindy's rattlin flyer spoon and the guys was loading the treble up with two to four spikes per hook. Do anyone else load up with as many as will fit? Is more better?

I usually put 2 on a single hook but I have found days where putting on as many would fit triggered the bite. I start with 1 then quickly put 2 on if no bites then if nothing try more on the hook. Not really a guide just what works for me.

Let the fish dictate what they like. In a spoon i tip all the hooks with one spike. Seems to work best for me. On single hooks such as jigs ill start with a single spike but most times i end up with two or three on it. Never had good luck with any more than 3.

Thanks for replies guys. I'm sure there in no truly wrong way. I just saw that vid a figured 12 spikes on one treble hook was a little much. I'll give a try anyway I'm sure :)

3 most of the time.

I go with three and if they are being really finicky I will decrease as needed.

I found that when I go with a few maggots all I catch are the 7-9 inchers. If I load it up with as many as I can I get the jumbos. I think it may have to do somethng with the fall rate. More bait, the slower the lure falls through the water column. It could also be the size of what ever the perch are feeding on that day. Had many days when 3 inch fat heads on a 2 inch swedish pimple would be the only thing that they wanted and the next they wanted a 1/2 inch minnow on a pin min and the next just a maggot on an ant. Keep changing until you get the pattern for the day. As soon as you think you got it figured out it will change.

Whatever the fish want that particular day. This week up at devils they wanted one spike on the jig but the also wanted a nice long tail like a trigger x wax tail or ratso tail

I've been using different colors of spikes on each hook
-
i always figured the jig or lure attracts and the spike provides the smell. so 1 or 2 is usually good for me.

2. That's the magic number on my lake

One on each treble, maybe two if it's a larger bait. Single hooks, 2-4 depending on size. Small tungstens might get 2 while hali jigs with larger hooks can hold 4.

Loaded up, 2 or 3 per hook on the treble
