Title: Deep Creek
Post by: Hockeydefense13 on Dec 01, 2013, 06:32 PM
Any thoughts on how early anyone thinks we'll get an ice pack there this year? 4inch at least.

The long range look pretty good if you want to trust it. If it's correct it looks like we could be before xmass

I spent last weekend at Pocomoke state park n there was ice on the pond inside the park and out near girdle tree. So I was thinking if the water out there is already cooling down then DCL has to be getting close. I have never been to DCL but ive heard tales of the ice fishing there and am really looking foreward to getting on some hard water this year. Its quite a drive from howard county but any day on the ice is worth it.

Just a lil sketch from last year....thought you guys might like it

(http://i1026.photobucket.com/albums/y327/cweeno/1004693_545327148865691_780251606_n_zps80db4e62.jpg) (http://s1026.photobucket.com/user/cweeno/media/1004693_545327148865691_780251606_n_zps80db4e62.jpg.html)

If anyone goes....please give an update.    Some of us live multiple hours away and can not afford to make a iceless or dangerous trip. I don't really understand it because when I was out west there were folks on this site that were more than happy to give ice reports. But it seems here in the east people want to keep a lake with nearly 70 miles of shoreline a secret along with every other lake as well? Come on now!  But thanks to those who do share the info.

I"ve heard of a couple guys being out on 2".  Not safe enough for me.
Looking at the weekend forecast, we'll be back to square 1.

I  heard the same thing as JB 2-3 I niches with snow and slop on top.

And flyfish people will be secretive first ice but after that it's gets better. Many of the people I have met on the ice have been very nice and helpful.

Post by: flyfishbowhunticefish on Dec 18, 2013, 11:47 AM
Thanks guys....yeah that does not sound good....but at least its a good start...even if it does all melt hopefully the lake will remain cold enough to easily freeze later after Christmas.   Good luck to anyone who has the chance to get out there. Be safe.

Is there enough ice in any of the coves that might last the warm front? Maybe McHenry Cove? It's kind of looking like back to square one. Looks to be another cold front behind this heat wave.

McHenry was still mostly open, as of yesterday.

Hopefully the cold snap after this weekends warmup will make the coves freeze over nicely. Looking forward to a trip or two before back to real ice country in upstate NY.

@hesseltine' Oswego County (school is SUNY Oswego), given your ESF background I'd assume you know all about that stuff. I'm personally more of a steelheader/flyfish college kid, but I like to hit the Hard water for purposes of our fishing club (I founded last spring with a couple other guys, been president of it).

That's a great area for fishing.  So many good spots within and hour. I use to fish Oneida and sandy pond when I was in school a lot. Still make trips up to Oneida couple times a year.

McH cove is all open water as of noon today.  I expect new ice shortly in the shallow, low volume locations.  Only question is how much residual heat needs to bleed off H2O again / how windy or still at night / how soon next heat wave.  Hope that'll help.

There were people fishing before the rain and warm up in the usual early ice spots but it didn't last long.  I heard the whole lake capped on Christmas Eve but not sure if that is completely accurate or not.

Checked several coves today and all had 1.5 inches of ice. I only drilled out about 30 ft from the shore and didn't see any peope out. The next cold front coming in on Monday should make parts fishable late next week.

I am going to try to head down sometime this week. Possibly next wednesday/ thursday.. Never fished the lake before. I bought a boat this year and want to try it out and try to learn some new spots. Being from Pa i usually fish highpoint alot but all the guys i see at the bait shop say to drive an extra 30minutes and go to Deep Creek you won't be disappointed.
Then a guy showed me a pic of a giant musky through the ice and I knew where i was starting to fish this year. Ed

Please refrain from using you boat. As you may break through any skim ice, It makes it weaker for the rest of the ice season. And takes those areas longer to refreeze. It could make for very dangerous spots for us ice fisherman. THANKS

i just got up here for the first time, but fished in green glade at teh se corner in the cove. wind was brutal today. managed a few perch and a pike after awhile. only an hour or so on the ice, lots of fish on non triggered flags cuz they iced up on contact almost. as far as ice conditions, good black ice, prob four and a half to five inches when we started, maybe five and a half when we were leaving. should stay locked up good.

Made a trip up there yesterday. Fished cherry cove for about two hours with no luck in 20 to 30 ft of water I would guess with two inches of black ice and some white ice on top. (I don't have a flasher, I just count feet as I drop down). Also I was not using minnows, just wax worms and jigging rap. Headed to GG later after the weather really picked up, but I was pretty confused about the parking so I didn't try there. It was pretty miserable so I went home once I read 1 degrees! Could have brought my Eskimo Fatfish but somehow or another my ice stakes are missing and theres no way im setting it up even with a babys breath of wind blowing!  Will bring minnows next time for sure and pick a day when its not so cold or after I order a new set of stakes.     Good luck

ah, finally got my name registered.  New here, though have been following for a while.

Got out on some ice at Sky Valley on Friday, was a solid 4 inches of good ice.  Set the traps for an hour or so, but no luck.  We only had worms, which was a mistake, but we didn't know if we'd find any ice so didn't make the stop for shiners.  Was maybe 7 feet of water at the most, anyone have any luck there before?  Will most likely try elsewhere next time.

Just my $.02, but at GG people do usually park at the end of the road, but sometimes landowners who are there are generous and let you park if you ask them. Also lots of perch in GG. Jig poles froze up so I didn't really check depths, but tip ups were down prob 5-7 ft and picking up perch. Good black ice, if anyone jigs up a blue strike master auger pm me. Our screw fell out and the auger went down, had to run back to nicklows.

There is Deep Creek Outfitters Hardware and Bait in McHenry too. I've talked to them about ice conditions and what not. Picked up some perch and a couple eyes on perch patterned chubby darters too. Perch disgorged fingernail clams and walleye, fingerling perch. Got a pic which I'll upload as soon as I figure out how

When I left today roads had snow on them 219 wasn't bad though. Most snow was drifts from the wind. Hard to tell how much snow fell as the wind was rippin pretty good all day. Still snowing at 430 when getting off the ice.

Fishing was pretty slow. Couldn't seem to find the fish although I didn't get to move around as much as if like to as it was just miserable with the wind and dragging through the drifts sucked.  Need a warm up to get the snow off the ice.

also fished mchenry. fell straight through up to my knees. not sure if it was from a snowmobile going in or someone drilling numerous holes too close to each other..

Made the trip yesterday to try the water. Went to GG n just set up but I didn't have batteries for minnows till later so a lot died leaving me with about 7 live ones for tipups. 3 tips outside produced 5 flags and two perch. One fish almost emptied the spool! lol Waxworms and teardrop jig inside produced 3 perch and 1 baby walleye, (6-7in). Felt like I could have done a lot better if the minnow situation was better...I had to fish dead minnows on some tipups so id still have a few for the rest of the day. Slow but at least I finally caught a walleye!

Fished Deep Creek on Saturday and Sunday , fished in 30-36 feet of water, Saturday: one 17'' walleye a couple of 14'' ones, 10 good size perch 10-13'', 6 bluegills, at least 10 more good perch went back to water because of the limit, Sunday: one 15'' walleye, three 14'' ones, 10 good perch, 2 bluegills. Moved a lot, used rapala jigging rap for active search and small tungsten jigs with maggots at perspective spots and to get sniffers. How to post a picture?

Yeah....they are...the perch seem to smell them even in stained water...since they're so small and clear when alive.  Just not sure where to catch em this time of year besides snow hill.               N try using photobucket vasea, just upload n n paste the link.  Sounds like u had a good weekend!

Met a guy last year at Canoe Creek In Pa. who fishes Deep Creek. It was his, and mine, first time at Canoe Creek. He had his 5 year old son Parker with him, his first time ice fishin. We had the pleasure of handing a tripped flag line, with a steadily spinning reel to Parker, who pulled in a 23 inch 7 lb bass. They were gone before I had a chance to get Parkers dads name or address. Anyone on this site happen to know this guy I would appreciate if you would ask him to contact me at the Canoe Creek thread in Pa reports. Great fishin...

I know that this has been asked before, but can someone provide a list of places where one can park and be able to ice fish somewhere other than by the state park at Deep Creek?  I have rented a house the last few years and I know that the parking is difficult.  I would be driving from 3 hours away.  Just looking for a few options on where one can park and have easy access to the lake.  Thanks.

Welcome aboard  frozenrichard! If you look at back posts in this thread, you'll some have already posted some good access points.

Post by: frozenrichard on Feb 05, 2014, 02:32 PM
Thank you.

1) Pritts Rd all the way to the end to fish Green Glade.  How many cars can park there?

2) White Oak Rd all the way to the end to fish Harvey's??  How many cars can park there?

Any areas to park near the damn, Marsh Cove, Cherry Creek Cove, North Glade Cove, areas near Turkey Neck, etc.

I just don't want to waste a 3 hour drive to find no where to park and be able to fish.

Good to know Baitrix.  Thanks alot.  Anybody else?  I'm not looking to burn any spots.  Just trying to find out some different places that I can park, be able to get out on the ice and spend some time fishing with a friend or two.  I know the lake from a boat, just not where one can park an access the lake in the winter.

Most of the time you can park on the side of the road and walk on. If there is a area you plan on fishing if there is someone around, just ask.   I've parked on dead end roads. Just be cautious not go on privet property.

A lot of snow from yesterday, pretty clean now, but I got stuck trying to park today, had to dig my altima for 40 min, did not have a shovel, missed morning bite, went and purchased shovel, if you have 4x4 you good, otherwise have a shovel)). Bite was slow got 4 perch 10 bluegills, 19" and 26" northerns, took pictures and let them go, did not move as usually though and came on ice at 1030, unusually not a single walleye.

Man that sucks about the rod...I saw a ton of guys flying all over the lake this weekend, kinda wondered if they ever hit anybody or their stuff.   they did slow down once the snow picked up so give then kudos for that.     Decent fishing for me though this weekend, ending with five jumbo perch, a few throw backs, and one 19.5 in walleye to finally put me in the books for my first legitimately and legal caught walleye!!!!

I was at green glade last week after dark, with a couple other fisherman next to me. You could look in all directions on the lake without seeing another fisherman, yet the sledders felt the need to come thru our small group.
Yeh Yeh Yeh, I get it, you got a toy and you want to show it off, but please show a LITTLE courtesy for others.

Hello everyone,

I was at Deep Creek lake for the first time this saturday, and ice fished for the first time here. That was really great, even if we don't catch anything in 5 hours. A really nice guy came to help us to make our holes (thanks to him if he's there).

I plan to renew it the 2nd of March. Is this possible at this period (enough ice ?)?

Sorry for my english, I'm french  ::) !

My go to, fish with one 95% of the time. Tip with 2 waxies or a fathead depending on what the fish want that day.

I usually use vey small jigs with maggots...

You just do a slow jig with the sukkula's? or do you do it fast?
Title: Re: Deep Creek
Post by: perchnut on Feb 17, 2014, 09:30 AM
love me some hali's.  I pound the bottom, then slowly lift to see how the fish react.  Often, they will follow up, then I just leave it sit and wait...then raise it a little more and that will often trigger a bite.  But I kind of let teh fish tell me what they want...I tip with a couple of maggots or a minnow head.

I was at Green Glade yesterday too. Get checked by F&G. Caught a few fish, pickerel, perch and walleye. Didn't stay very long but the bite has certainly picked up! Late season is so exciting~!

What size and color Hali's are you guys using?
Title: Re: Deep Creek
Post by: flyfishbowhunticefish on Feb 17, 2014, 12:08 PM
Yup I got checked as well...they informed me that my pike was actually a northern and gave me a 130 dollar ticket for it and took the fish so I still don't know what they taste like ???....Ive never caught them and cant tell the difference, I heard they weren't great to eat anyways so I don't think ill ever keep a pike of whatever specie again just to be safe. Really wish them guys would have cut me a break, after dragging through all that snow, slipping and twisting my knee pretty bad, then losing a phone through a hole, that ticket hurt!    Now ill go get some cheese to go with my whine.
Title: Re: Deep Creek
Post by: shanedoe on Feb 17, 2014, 03:17 PM
I use the smallest hali about 1in. long plus chain. Perch color or chartreuse. Only need to jig them 6 to 12 in. once fish come in slow it down to a lift and let it fall slowly. Sometimes just a little shake will trigger non aggressive ones into biting.

Title: Re: Deep Creek
Post by: cyclocoastie on Feb 18, 2014, 07:17 AM
Flyfish, Don't let these guys fool you. Pickerel are a GREAT eating fishing! There is a difference like Hess said. Although only slight coloration and size. If it's any consolation, pickerel and northern pike are in the same family! I keep the Pickerel I catch. They have to be 14" to keep, that hasn't been a problem yet! I like to pickle 'em. But they are absolutely delicious pan fried too. Their skeletal structure is such that there are little pin bones that go horizontal along the spine. With the smaller fish, those bones break down pretty good in the frying process. With the bigg fish, you can grab those bones with a needle nose pliers and clean them out pretty good. They do have a distinct fishy flavor, so I like to marinade mine in red pepper, black pepper and salt for about an hour before frying in hot oil. I don't typically bread it but I wouldn't discourage it!

Sorry to hear about the ticket man, that sucks.

Fished yesterday, moved alot through deep snow, got a couple small perch and one 15 inch walleye, got checked by DNR, walleye got frozen and appeared meybe 1/16'' short or even less, with pinched tail it was exactly 15, so she told me to be careful next time. Did anione alse fish on monday, if yes how did you do?
Title: Re: Deep Creek
Post by: flyfishbowhunticefish on Feb 18, 2014, 03:12 PM
dang vasea!   maybe that is proof that there is such thing as "cooler shrinkage"    I always said that was just an excuse used by fishermen to say that that huge fish was way bigger when it was caught.   But if you actually think about it...things either shrink or expand upon freezing depending on the matter being frozen...and fish...would shrink...not expand.   perhaps they should consider that 1/16 of an inch. (which is totally reasonable considering physics)...hope no one gets a ticket over this.   if so I would take a pic and have my own "evidence"

I went out on Turkey Neck near the yacht club. Fished from around 2:30 until dark, the wind was brutal. I did manage 5 perch (4 keepers), one smallie and one short walleye. Missed more than I caught and I'm sure there was many hits that went undetected due to the wind. I didn't want to fool with the flip-over due to the slush and the wind. Most of my bites were before 4:30pm, after that all I had was sniffers. I figured with the way they were hitting when I first got there it would have been a great evening...but I will take what I can get. As for the slush. I was surprised there was only a few inches there. Lots of standing water on the ice though.

Had a monster of a fish spool a tipup in 6 seconds then break the leader...big northern?   Lots of flags at night....just too sleepy to catch them in time...woke up after a 30 min nap to 5 flags n no fish. :(  walleye shut off at daylight.

shallow water next to some kind of structure or dropoff....I had the most bites between 3 and 6 am in about 8 to 10 fow.....I put jinglebells on my tipup flags and kept then pretty close to the shelter....I would be going back sunday to get more eyes but with the season being closed I think ill get some rest and fish during the day...3-5 pm has been the best for that...hope this helps   Im still a newbie to the walleye fishing but its amazing what you can learn online and just getting out on the ice in such a short amount of time.

Cool...thanks bowhunter.   As far as the perch go...and don't quote me on any of this but its a slightly educated guess....the perch are most likely schooled up tight right now near spawning cover. They like to spawn on wood from what ive seen so id try looking somewhere close to shore and locating downed trees or brushpiles....if you know of any Christmas tree dumps now would be the time to fish them.  I have no proof for any of this but its what they do in the rivers at this point of the spawning cycle....which makes me wonder if they would go into the feeder creeks for spawning...if that was true id say try near the inlets of coves where there is a little bit of current and a creek big enough for them to spawn or just below the current where the fish might "stage".   What do you think Cyclocoastie?

No doubt fish behavior in a lake is different than in a river. Perch in a lake tend to spawn on shallow flats like mud (statistically). Right now is when we all expect to see those fish move from deeper water and into the shallows. As they do, they will become more aggressive. Timing is never exact though and different lakes and different ends or areas of the same lake may behave slightly different. We are transitioning into the late season now but that doesn't mean the fish will be in the shallows at the exact point as safe ice. I'm still learning Deep Creek Lake so I'm not really sure what to expect for this lake. I fished shallow water this last weekend we faired alright (we didn't get skunked). I think those fish are still in deeper water (+15 feet). I hope some of the people that fish the lake on a regular basis will share some of their wisdom with us!

I didn't fish DCL this past weekend but the previous weekend the perch were still deep (25'+) & feeding on the little mud snails. It shouldn't be too long though before they start moving in for the spawn. Reel them up slowly to keep their airbladder from over expanding in case you decide to let one go.

vasea, did you look at the stomach contents of the Perch you caught? I was wondering what they were eating up in the shallows. The one I brought home had a fry and a small plastic bait in it. The Pickerel were chalk full of baby crayfish.

Last weekend I caught perch in 35 feet of water, mud on the bottom, they were spitting tiny worms, but I spent 6 hours to get 3 where before I was easily catching the limit, may be it just was a bad day, I wish to figure out where is the concentration of prespawn fish, this is my challenge for next weekend.

Been MIA off this thread for awhile. Been up at college in Upstate NY, fishing with SUNY Oswego fishing club. that I started. Miss those DCL perch though....much more size to em than most of the lakes up here, with the exception of Oneida. In other news hopefully Ill be able to hit DCL more next year. transferring to Frostburg to do fisheries science. ...... not because I like fishing or anything.... :o

Saturday, we had plenty of ice at DCL.  About 20" with slush and water on top later in the day.  Cold night temps should keep it around for a while.

The wind was brutal, and worsened after dark.  We had to cut our evening short because the wind was howling and it started to rain pretty hard.  Even though we were in our Fish Traps, the wind had them shaking like there was an earthquake.

Rain rain stay away...if so, we'll have decent ice until April.

Saturday was awesome. Tried the state park cove for an hour or so n jigged up one pickerel in 5 fow. Then headed to the cove near the park, the one with the bridge, idk which that one is called. But after a few drops in abandoned holes I quickly found the gills and limited out in an hour or so. 20 fow.

If anyone is out today or tomorrow, would appreciate knowing if you were able to get on with/without a plank.  I was hoping to come down Saturday but am hearing of guys going in getting off the ice.  So I'm wondering how much open water is between the shore and the ice so I can plan accordingly.
Thanks.

I fished Turkey Neck this evening. Marked a lot of fish but they were dinks. It seems the water level has raised a few feet from when I was up three weeks ago. There was maybe 2 feet of open water at the bank but I was able to step out on good ice. Found nice crack maybe 10 yards from the banks that ran parallel to the bank. Spud went straight through. Used a plank to cross, 10-14 inches of good ice after that. Should have stayed at the house, wind was awful and got skunked.

Headed to GG with my son tomorrow morning.  Some of the safest ice on the lake.  Looking at some of recent post on the DCL page gives me a bit of hesitation!   Whats the safety factor?  Anyone have advice?  Thanks !

I talked to a buddy yesterday that said where there are rocks the open water is 4 to 5ft. And you needed a ladder to get on

Ghart, I was planning on going there as well and taking out a buddy for the first time.  Am really second-guessing it at this point.  I know GWebb didn't have trouble getting on at Turkey Neck but who knows what the sun/wind has done to the shoreline.  Last Saturday Green Glade was solid and edges were good but there was hardly any one out.  And the fishing sucked.  I just hate to drive a couple hours to find it to be too iffy for me.

Thanks for the note.  Got 52 degrees and wind blowing hard. Not a good combo for ice.  Just checked the potomac. Water is green and running good.  I'll go Chase Walleye instead and trout when the sun comes up.  Good bye DCL.......  May we all be blessed with a good ice season next year!!

Fished Turkey Neck near the yacht club today. Getting on was pretty easy, had my ladder and used it to cross one crack that was open yesterday. Fished until around 7pm or so. It was a very slow day. Landed maybe 12 fish total, 2 gills, 1 walleye and the rest dink perch. Couldn't find the jumbos to save my life. Marked a lot of fish but they mostly were sniffers. The wind and temps chewed it up pretty good where I got on. I thought for sure I would end up going for a swim when I got close to shore but with the ladder I was able to cross what was an iffy spot that turned into a 4-6" gap. Once I was within 4' of the bank the water wasn't over my boots so I stayed dry. If you go make sure to take a plank/ladder.

I was there Friday and saturday and everywhere you look was snow.  Temp was very mild and lake was open water.  i was hoping to spend new years on ice but it looks like it is doubtful as temps look right around freezing for the 10 day outlook.

Funny how things work; I just transferred from SUNY Oswego to Frostburg, (where yet again I have started a fishing club, but this time with a fly fishing focus and TU setup), but nonetheless, I should be able to provide reports on Ice Conditions for Piney, Rocky gap and DCL fairly often this year. Headed up for steelheading this weekend, then hardwater in NY in January. I would guess we wont see Ice out here til mid-late January at best, given the long range and the fact its been fairly mild.

I have no experience on this lake at all, but after looking at contour maps and taking suggestions from this forum into consideration, I plan on fishing the hump directly out from the beach area of the state park. I'm planning on trying to find the inner edge of the hump and get tip ups set up from the deep channel to the top of the hump at various depths until I can find a pattern. I'm pretty new to ice fishing and very new to the lake so any tips/comments on this plan would be appreciated.  Also, does anyone know what the bottom structure and vegetation is like in this area?

Lots of old stumps & heavy vegetation (milfoil) Don't worry about getting hung up on weeds of stumps. State Park is a good choice. I'll be out there myself on Saturday. Look for the guy using a palm rod.

Fished DCL this past weekend. This was my first time ice fishing. Never did it as a kid, but wish I had. Didn't have much luck as four of us only managed 3 Perch and 1 Walleye. After reading some other forums it sounds as though we were not the only one not catching. Coming back this weekend with more toys. I had a Marcum LX5 at my door step when I got home from work today. Can't wait to try it out.
