This is a Best Butt Ugly Shanty   entry...

This is Winnie.  She served us incredibly for 18 seasons... but was finally retired in 2008.  She still serves as a utility shed to this day.  It survived 2 high speed collisions, and had to be brought back from the dead after a Break and Enter in the early 90's.  She definately didn't look pretty, with a patchwork of fix's and paint that seen better days, but we certainly pulled alot of fish out of her, and for that we will be forever thankful  ;)

Here is my first entry is for the Tricked Out category:

This shanty folded down measures 5'x7'. Each side may be opened by it self or both at the same time which makes it 15' x 7' with room for eight, 12 if four are kids. The complete set up time is about 1 min and take down as well. Under the seats and center is enough storage room for at least that many peoples equipment and coats, ect... once it's warmed up inside. There are easy storage quick access rod holders in four spots that will hold 16 rods. And when the snow is deep the six inches of clearance would make it a bear to pull so you just hit a switch an the hydraulic skis raise it to twelve inches.

Hey stoutbait, whats the tailpipe for? You got a generator or something in there?

It was a learning mistake with an old heater and duct work. The heater has been replaced. But it looks like our shack has a jet engine on it so we kept part of the pipe. It gets alot of looks and questions.

Here's my submission, my Pack Shack.  Built about six years ago
I used to bleed green and gold but I am a Favre fan more than a Packer fan.
Now to top it all off, it's too cold to repaint it Purple and Yellow.
So I get to look at this ugly shack all year.

this is my modded/ pimped out porty. Its a camo blue otter lodge that I bought last year. I used the original seats and center bar, and built a rear storage compartment and a big center console for it.
I have a seperate cubby in the console underneath to store my tackle box. I also have the electrical components all in a cubby (including a 32 amp/hr deep cycle battery) in the console.
I put reflectix in the ceiling and made a light bar out of uhmw and  used standard automotive lights, 2 of them are LED as you can see in the picture.
I ran three strands of clam's rope lights that I connected together to the front over the door.
I run a clam battery powered  fan to pull the heat down, and with my big buddy I can fish -15 in a t shirt. heres the pics.
I like the Frabill hooks and have I think 6 of them throughout the house for hanging the fan, jackets and other stuff.
Dont laugh but I bought a boom box/DVD player when the bite is slow.
Its nice clean and simple. I am excited to get out and use it, Ive been working on it all summer. It may look like a lot of stuff but I can go from fully set up to on my way home in just over 10 minutes.

I redid my post from page one cuz I got a lot better pics of it. I wish I could add more pics cuz I have more to show of it.

I should like to nominate "The Lily Pad" for two separate categories.  She is our 6' x 8' winter home on Saratoga Lake.

First for the best scenic shot.  A "Saratoga Lake Sunrise"...March 2007
(http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k33/evanzandt/03-10-071-1.jpg)

Second for the most Ugly Shanty.  You'll have to agree, it is a ugly scene.  February 2006

I would like to enter my two portables. I still have them both!

The sled part on the white one has a hole for the 5 gallon bucket for the poles. The green one has the same, its just on the other side so I can strap them together, bottom to bottom for pulling them out on the ice. Harder for the wind to blow away.

Shouldn't your shack be green and white now not green and gold?  You are a year off.  I feel sorry for anyone that paints anything based on Favre's current team, their paint budget would be through the roof!

Sorry, just a jilted packers fan speaking here.  Fortunately for you, my appreciation for fellow ice fishermen is greater than my hatred of "Favre fans" so I won't hunt down and sink your shack the second it turns purple and gold.

Not to get off topic, so this will be all I have to say about the subject.  Every team in the NFL, including the vikings, would take Aaron Rodgers over Brett Favre right now.  Rodgers is not why the Packers are struggling and Favre is not why the Vikings are winning, simple as that.

There, back on topic.

No pictures for me, every shack that I have ever had a hand in building has been so mediocre that it would fail to qualify for any category here.  It is fun to look at the pictures though, so keep them coming.

Starting to get anxious for ice fishing season to roll around so I figured i should post some pics of my portable shanty I built 2 years ago. Took about a month to build with some buddies. It's a bit on the heavy side but we made sure it was good and sturdy.
Here's my favorite pic of it. The sky almost looks like a wildfire, it's awesome.

here's a pic of the first fish caught inside the shanty, a 5 inch perch.

here's a pic of the inside.

Enjoy. Can't wait to use it again this winter!

Hey wedkarz...  nice shack...  I have one similar to yours, but with a few upgrades?..  I have no idea if you are interested, but I am completely computer handicapped, and for whatever reason can't get the pictures to post on my macbook.  I took the basic shack that you built but where your floor is i built a box that is tall enough to close the top down over five gallon buckets.  My thoughts were that since there isn't much room for storage, they would double as seats and storage.  The advantage is I can fold down my shack and move it without having to pull everything out of it to do so.  Experience has taught me that five gallon buckets are absolute hell on my back, and I have now gone to a fold up chair.  It is a brilliant design for running and gunning as I simply drill a new hole and relocate the shack only having to pull up my transducer.  My heater and everything stays in place and running.  The biggest disadvantage to me is that I have doubled the weight of my shack.  I am a puller, and had the mechanic at work fabricate half inch bolts welded to metal plates that I insert into lawn mower wheels on the four corners to ease the towing.  I have found that the plastic wheels crack under extreme temps, but all metal wheels are the key.  I currently have no sled or wheeler so I literally pull mine everywhere, and sometimes by myself.  You would definitely benefit from the added height, and with that wheeler have no issues.  I have also gone to a taller wheel to get me through deeper snow.  I have yet to have a snow I couldn't pull it through by myself, however, a buddy helping to pull has proven to be a thigh saver.  Lastly, I went to a carpet store and bought a strip that goes from the door end of my shack to the back, but is only three feet wide.  I have one foot of exposed wood on the floor to allow my flaps to open and close, and I can sweep the water back into my open holes.  The carpet was treated with a can of scotch guard for longevity.    Great shack, just some ideas if you are interested.  Good luck out there...  be safe.

Best Portable Shanty entry.  We fish a different lake each week, so for us Portable is the only way to go.

If your going by yourself or with a friend this works Great even on the windiest days
(http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii213/coach04222/100_0903-1.jpg)

If your going with a bunch of friends and/or you what to spend the night for a tournament this works Great. Opens up to 8' x 8' and has a insulated floor to help keep you warm.

And if you are taking a army of friends, you can just zip them together

Dual 40 lbs propane tank's, vinyl Thermal windows, and trailer lights. On the inside theres a, Sat TV, Microwave, 6 holes, Rattle Reels, 12 volt hole lights, 110 volt lights & outlets, Battery Tender, 3 Burner Gas Cook Top With Oven, Forced air Furnace, for back up to keep the hole's open when your away there's a vented Empire Gas Heater, a Dinette with under seat storage with a bay window, there's also a small storage room in the V front area.   (http://i38.tinypic.com/hwwxf6.jpg)      (http://i37.tinypic.com/ajp1qa.jpg)      (http://i36.tinypic.com/2v9u4k7.jpg)

I've had my sleeper for about 4 years, I picked up the X2 about a year ago. So I decided to sell my older 4 person Clam that I had for 12 years and I got what I paid for it.

I will always own a Clam, they have the BEST customer service in the business. The wind took my 1st house down the lake and broke just about every pole in it. I called their Customer Service and told them what happen and asked them if I could order the poles I needed. They told me that they were having some issues with some of the poles in my style Clam and told me they would send me all new poles @ NO Charge.

I like both of them, if I could only own one, I don't think I could decide.

Here is my entry for best scenic, or whatever cat. you want to judge it in.

This was our first time driving on ice.  Skies were blue and the sun was shining when we went out about 8 AM on Houghton Lake in MI.  This was the scene 2 hours later.  We came off at 4:00 with eight inches of snow and in a whiteout.  Glad I had the trail feature turned on on the GPS on the way out!!

I live in Durham, which is just outside Freeport, the home of LL Beans. I could not have the toys I have, if I didn't work at Beans. We have not made it up to NH to fish, we bounce from Sebago area up to the Winthrop area.

Thanks, If I didn't have this sled, it would be like pulling a big brick.

It was easy to build. I took apart 2 8' toboggans, because there is only 7 boards per toboggan and I wanted 4 boards per side to make the runners. The speedrail you can get at any fence company.

Not to get off topic, so this will be all I have to say about the subject.  Every team in the NFL, including the vikings, would take Aaron Rodgers over Brett Favre right now.  Rodgers is not why the Packers are struggling and Favre is not why the Vikings are winning, simple as that.

As a long time Vikes fan, I have to agree.

All the pictures posted on this thread are great and I wish everyone good luck...I have since retired the HT and now own a Clam Kenai and am waiting for the ice to arrive.....

Best Scenic Shot
I took this picture 2 years ago.  The mountain in the background is Turtle Mountain and in 1903 the North Face of the mountain broke away resulting in the greatest landslide in North American history.  In 100 seconds at least 76 people killed and three-quarters of the homes in the town of Frank were destroyed.

Best Portable Shanty
The province of Alberta has a holiday in February called family day.  My son and I went to a ice fishing derby (Feb 2009)that was held on this holiday.  The HT Polar Express Pull over worked quite well and when we weren’t having any luck, we just through it in the sled and moved. We didn't win but it was great day spent with my youngest son.

I have know Idea of what category the should be in so I'll leave it to the "Gods!"
I purchased a voyager tarp this year and built the rest. I give thanks to skipper for some measurement and pics of his sled.
So here's the breakdown. The sled rides on conduit skis. The sled has 4 covered compartments and two open ones. one compartment lid folds out to a table. One compartment has storage for rods(with a holder) and tipups. The rest are misc. the open compartments are for the big budd and a lantern. I have a deep cycle battery that runs LED lights in each compartment that are on it's own switch as well a as three LED's that illuminate the fishable area. A 12V outlet was installed for a dead cell phone ect... I also have the RPS system installed on my homemade slide poles.

You can check out the full built here if your interested.  http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=117507.80 (http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=117507.80)

Early and Late Ice here I come!  (Portable Category)

My homemade shanty is very lite weight and it has an aluminum ramp door for loading your wheeler and/or sled in. The walls are 2x2 with very light weight fiberglass panels for walls and roof. The windows are Plexiglas. The sub floor is actual aluminum also. This summer, I just added 1/4" plywood on the floor to keep it warmer. I also added the catch covers and some old carpet to the aluminum ramp door for warmth. It also has 12volt over head lighting and led lighting for each of the 3 holes. Drink/beer holders. Rattle reels inside and outside. It also has folding shelves for resting flashers on. It has many hooks for coats and or lanterns. I also put a hook up for resting my auger on the outside.  It has two entrance doors, one towards the front and one in the back so you don't have to step over each other when nature calls. I've had this shack for two years now and it is a joy when you need to get out and become mobile late or early season. My friends tell me it looks like an Amish buggy.

PS: If you look close you can see some snowflakes falling in the first picture. I just took these pictures 15 minutes ago. Let the ice come!!!!

Yea, I just keep it hooked up to the wheeler and if the fish aren't biting where I'm at I throw my auger in the shack and go to a different spot. If your ever up in northern, WI. give me a shout you can go fishing with me and my buddies. We have around six shacks now. Four permanent shacks for different lakes and two mobile shacks for wherever. I might be bringing this one down south to Lake Wisconsin this winter. I'm not sure if they ever seen an Amish buggy down there before or not but it should be fun.  ???

The poles are 1/2" conduit - all color coded so they attach in the same location each time. The cover was made locally. "T" shaped aluminum was used for skis. There's a table that folds out, and a shelf that hangs off from the conduit poles. Propane connections for stove and heater all built in also.

The pictures are mine, but my brother-in-law made the shack. If it doesn't qualify for the contest, that's fine. Just thought it would give people some ideas if nothing else.  ;)

This one is not the most high tech model out there, but it's only a 20 minute drive from home.
Warm enough to fish all day no matter how cold!

Hear is my little baby. Nothing to fancy but warm and effective. It is a 6 x 10, sits on 4x4 treated rails, floor is joiced with 2 x 4's, walls are all 2 x 2.and has 4 holes skids very nice behind the quad or later in the year behind the truck. It loads up on a 8 x 10 quad trailer that I have quite nice for long transport but for the most part it stays out on what ever lake I put it on for the season and just move it around the lake.

Heated with wood from a nice little air tight stove.

there is an advantage to the ones who hav'nt submited yet. for example, if i already submitted my pic.(and i have), i only have last seasons pics to choose from, and cannot re-submit a pic.......if i hav'nt submited a pic, i can "target" a catagory'.....i.e. "scenic"... and wait till this season for a better picture and then submit it.......there are other advantages, because of the "extension" that my fingers would get to tired to type, but im sure if you think about it you'll come across them

You have a castle man! How about a coat of paint? The "oops" paint, wrong mix colors at the Home Depot, or other large hardware stores can be had for a few bucks, and even spray paint will dry when it's cold out if you let it set long enough.
Very nice house though, it speaks of a warm cozy place to fish.

I used to bleed green and gold but I am a Favre fan more than a Packer fan.
Now to top it all off, it's too cold to repaint it Purple and Yellow.
So I get to look at this ugly shack all year.

Not that much trouble with smell from the slimmers, and we do pull up a few, just grab em in the gills and ether back down the hole or out the door.... no hairy chicken allowed! The carpet is a indoor outdoor type, that helps to keep the floor from getting slippery when wet or ice, and it works great!

Open Air Comfort

I decided to build this sled while I was waiting for the ice this year.As it turned out the ice was ready before I was.
The main construction of the sled was made from birch ply and trimmed out with solid cherry that I had laying around. I used two small down hill skis for the main runners and made the center ski from 1/4" birch ply and other materials. The center ski is set higher than the other skis so it only comes into play when the snow is soft.
The top frame work was made using Baltic birch and has plastic inserts for the four powder coated aluminum supports. On the sled, the supports are in sleeves that have 3" compression springs in them to maintain tension on the fabric that's connected to the frame and sled with snaps.
Inside the sled has hangers and brackets so everything is secure. The removable extension arm for the Vex is also made from Baltic birch.
The unit was finished with a wiping stain and several coats of marine grade clear coat.
It also has a good weight balance to it and pulls nicely.

Might as well throw mine into the mix.  It's the cab off of a railroad "jigger", used aluminium 4x6 I-beams for the runners with old waterski's as the ski tips.  It pulls real nice behind the snowmobile. It stays on lake Lac du Bonnet in Manitoba.

OK, might as well have our's up here. A group of us got together and built this 12 x 12. All panelized sections. We keep it stacked on shore in the summer and put it out each year as soon as the ice gets safe. Last year was the maiden voyage, took five guys just under four hours to get it up. Maybe three hours to take it off.
This year they did it(I had to work) in 3 hours. Home made wood stove keeps it 70 dgrees even at 25 below.

Here is one I am going to sell as soon as the paint dries.  Before I stripped her she had a Alpine stereo and Sirius radio. It folds up and the downhill skis track right in my snowmobile or 4-wheeler tracks, loads very easily on my snowmobile trailer with my sled beside her.(http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=2442&pictureid=14853)(http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=2442&pictureid=14854)

Here's my baby.  This will be its 3rd winter.  It sits on Minnesota's Lake Mille Lacs.  We use it in the summer as well- notice the ac unit above the heater.  That's a queen size bed for the Mrs. and me, we have 2 twins beds on the other loft.  And the last pic is the kitchen and bath.  We love it.

That's ULTIMATE!  That's fantastic!

So this is my Portable / Hub.  Nothing fancy, not home made, not tricked out, but is my very first.  I purchased the Clam 6x12 Command Post.  Wanted my own so I didn't have to wait to go with friends and could fit my family of 5 + dog.  Now I can take my 5yo out ice fishing anytime he or I want.  I stuff everything in a small 44x22 sled to fit in the back of my Xover.

So I think this picture says it all - my 5yo out for the very first time ice fishing with me and said he wants to go again tomorrow and the next day, and the next....

I'm gonna give er some TLC this weekend and it should be good as new after that! Cheers to the rest of these awesome entries!

This is my day shack I just finished building to use out at my cottage lake. I just finished fixing up this 1977 Alpine to pull it with. The day shack is 4 x 10 with an oil space heater and two inside holes. Plenty warm to fish out of. Did manage to get my first walleye of 2010 even with the extreme cold temps the last few days.

Tracker: that is one awesome combination. Good looking hut!! and the Alpine...Man the memories I have of one of those, Wish I had a dollar for every mile I put on one from '74 to '79. Grooming trails at the camp we had. They gave me 10.00 a weekend, and lunch. Meant I had to ride late into the night, But to have a bunch of guys go riding an come in and slap your back(I was 12 LOL) was a great feeling of accomplishment. Is that the 399 or the big boy 540?

Welcome to the Shamper! It is a year round rednek retreat. Fully outfitted for ice fishin in the winter, and camping in the summer. It has a table that can seat 6 that is replaced by a queen size bed for the summer, a 3 burner propane stove, sink pan for washin dishes, electric lighting, plenty of drawers and cabinets and added touches of home like wood paneling on the inside, screen door and windows, and of course mr.buddy heater for the cold days. It doesn't hurt having a cool paint sheme either! Tip UP!!!!!!

Inside rear showing bunks and part of couch.  the cords on the left are now hooked up to my marine radio.  this picture was taken durring construction.  a little blurry, but it gives a good idea of what the house actually looks like.  notice the chrome security system switch under the light switches on the wall by the door on the left of the picture.

Here is my hardside shanty. In my senior year in college i needed something to do while i was procrastinating my homework.  so i built this.  I bought a completly stripped steel trailer with no decking and built it up from there.  I looked constantly for good deals on parts like the window and doors, but didnt skip important parts like tyvek, a good treated plywood floor.  I really like the way it turned out.  this is my second winter with it.

features:
-sleeps 4 (one folding queen bed/couch, and two single bunks)...mattresses on each bunk
-ladder to top bunk
-10K BTU Vent-free heater with thermostat and fan right above heater
-8 fishing holes with "custom" covers
-6 Lowandowski glow in the dark rattle reels
-fully carpeted floor
-2 12V compact florescent lights with independant switches
-110V rope light.
-wired with 5 110V (plus one outlet outside) outlets
-110V flood light above door.  light for cleaning fish, packing up, ect.
-external gernator hookup
-power inverter
-security alarm. (painfully loud)
-four speakers in ceiling running off of a marine radio with CD player and Aux input
-wall mounted bottle opener (Budweiser of course)
-dual propane tank system with automatic switchover
-large window(s) for tippups and people watching...dark curtains for sleeping in
-plenty of out-of-site storage under the bottom bunks
-wire shelving for storage and glove/hat/sock warming

well here's my Alaskan entry - built outside starting the day after thanksgiving and hauling it to the lake a day or two after new years. Half of the build weekends were colder than 30 below zero...good times!

It's 10'x7', sits on 4x6 skids, typical 2x2 construction (ripped 2x4's in half), floor is insulated with 1" foam sandwiched in plywood sitting on 2x4 joists, six holes, walls and roof insulated with r-13 fiberglass, all the tin and much of the plywood was salvage from various sources, homemade plexiglass windows with sliding blackout covers on the interior. Heater is a vented catalytic propane unit. A couple computer case fans for air circulation. CO alarm, smoke alarm, fire extinguisher, and first aid kit. Sleeps four in single bunks - a bench/bunk and an RV style dinette bench/bunch at ground level with a fold down overhead bunk over each.  110v from a generator and 12v from deep cycle batteries with interior (flourescent) and exterior lights for each.

scenic shot first - mount hayes about 50 miles away in the background at just under 14,000 feet.

not much of a 'pimped out shack', but it's cozy even at 30 below zero
(http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/akwormy/IMG_6469.jpg)

haven't seen too many action shots, so here's the real payoff for a month of weekends freezing my butt off building a shack!

Don't think that im going to get mine done before feb 15 deadline thanks to the 2ft of snow that just buried everything here in PA. so i hope there is a contest next year.

I finished my new shanty and had it out a few times. It works better than I thought it would. Takes only a couple of minutes or less depending on my help. It weighs 332lbs. It is 8x8 inside. It has a built in bench seat on one side. I have pushed it out by hand and pulled it with a 125 four wheeler. All of the sides are printed with digital pictures from my underwater camera and some found by the artist at work. The top has a picture of a large shark, for the low flying planes. It is made to fish on thin ice and I have had it on five inches of ice this season. The inside was printed to look like wood.

Folded, ready to pull or push.

Michianafisherman your shanty design is sort of unique to start with the photographic prints take it over the top. It definitely is one of a kind and will stand out from the crowd.
I do not know if you do the process of making the wall panels ,looks like a good business opportunity.

Thought I would try to submit my ice shack.  Hopefully the pictures will show up.   It's 6.5 X 16, has six holes, six rattle reels, a stereo, a TV/DVD player, 16,000 BTU forced air furnace, double rear doors and the booth converts to a bed.   I bought it last fall as a shell with just the inside walls panelled.   I added the ceiling, trimmed it out and made the booth/table, shelves and installed the TV, stereo and furnace.   Fun project but way more time consuming than I would have guessed.    It has been a blast to fish out of and we try to do as many overnighters as possible.

This shanty is great. Just like sitting outside, all the view without the wind. Its 8x8 with plexi glass roof and walls.

One could sell tickets to the "Big Gun" or "bikini ice fishing woman" shows in that beautiful rig!  ;)  It looks cool tho. And wow the expense of plexi ! I hope you got that plexi for a real good price (i.e. free from work  ;)  )

Very interesting pics and information.  It would be nice to know how much some of these hard sides weigh and how much ice it takes to support them?

Eh I wish I had all the time and resources to make one myself. But then I'd be hard pressed to even design something so cool.
