Make a jig stick, hand line the fish up. Much better hook set, no frozen reel or guides. And it's cheaper!

A medium for lakers., I've never needed anything  more.
There must be a twelve step program for this

I gotta agree with Capt. on this one. Stick, Heavy test Dacron, Barrel swivel and 20 lb mono. Hand line em up. Show no mercy cause you wanna jam that hook into their top lip plate, then keep em coming. Use 1oz bucktails, Kastmaster or Pimples tipped with cut bait, shiners or smelt.
I do have a jig rod (med action with a bait runner reel) that I use from time to time when fishing outside but much prefer a stick. I tend to lose them on a rod.

I never had much luck getting a good hook set, even with a fairly heavy rod/reel setup.  Last winter I started using a jig stick with 20lb mono.   What a difference it made, I have hooked nearly every trout that has hit since I started using it. Just make sure that your holding on tight especially if you're wearing gloves, as there is not much give in this system and big fish hit hard. I have never actually lost a stick down the hole but have had one jerked out of my hand, luckily the hook didn't set, so all I lost was a chance at the only fish that bit all day.
In short I would suggest making yourself a jig stick.  BD

A piece poplar 20" long and 2 notches cut in the ends is all you need. Their cheap, easy to make and you can get everyone in you neighborhood jigging.

You might even want to try 12lb flourocarbon for a leader.  Sometimes the lakers are real finicky and they get "leader shy" when the see the 20lb mono.  The flourocarbon is a little more stealthier on the days when those lakers are picky and still pretty rugged too.
