Has anyone on here made a custom flip-over style shanty? If so any advice? Source for materials and hardware?
I made a custom sled using a large rubbermaid action packer and would like to try to make a flip-over style shanty that would attach to it.
I am thinking about using Boat Bimini Top hardware. For example:

You got the right idea with the bimini top hardware. I was going to build one last year using electrical conduit and sew my own cover. I ended up getting a pop-up blind for x-mas so i did not get to build it this year. Maybe a project for the summer.
I looked at a lot of the pre-built ones based on an otter type sled to get ideas.

HEY COVE I SENT YOU A MESSAGE HOPE THIS HELPS

here are a few pics of a flip over I made last year. Its kinda rustic and cheap-its nothing more than a pallet with built up sides and a tarp and 1x3 for the framework--its not much to look at but it serves its purpose--

I'm looking to build one also, but how do your hinges work?

Here's my project from a year or two ago. A one man flipover shanty designed to work with a standard JetSled. The Frahillbilly. This project is currently gathering dust in my basement. Free to anyone who wants to come and get it. ;)

Just for the fun of it I was trying to price out building a DIY flip over. I have a Frabill Ranger Solo and can see that building one really would not take a lot of technical knowhow. Get the hang of bending conduit and you are on you way.
The only problem is once you add in the cost for a decent sled($50), hardware($40-50), seat($30) and a tent($50-?) you are now at the range of buying a low end new flip over or a higher end used unit. Of course you can go cheaper on the above...bucket for seat, tarp for tent, cheap sled for $25, etc.
The tent becomes the "looks great" or "looks crappy" point. Your choices here are buy a replacement tent for a production unit(probably the best option), sew your own, piece together tarps, buy something already made that will work as a shanty tent...maybe a golf cart storage cover(very similar in size to shanty covers)???
Maybe sell the plans on Ebay for $2.50 per copy and get rich!!!

trooper great job and build thread,if you are still giving this away please pm me, I just got my neighbor started in ice fishing last year and this is about his price range,I have to see if he's up for a two hour drive each way, last year the two of us were in my scout at times just to warm (tight)

Nice shanty it's very original and probally a lot cheaper than the ones at the store.

I would gladly take that project off your hands, with a little donation. Where are you located?

Pretty sure he's not a member anymore.

To stay on topic, I've got an old Eskimo Quickflip1 skin - green color - that I got from a supporter (Fleet Farm maybe) and I intend to use 1/2" or 3/4" EMT for the whoops. It's 30" wide so I'll build a deck that will go on a Smitty that will be the foundation for it all. I hope to be able to put the flip over on/off the deck as needed.
That Bimini hardware has given me a few ideas for weight savings on the EMT.
Thanks for bumping this up.

I made my first flip 2 years ago using bimini hardware from a paddle boat. I also salvaged some lightweight square tubing from a 10' x 10' outdoor pop up canopy that were extending. I made it work but it took some doing. I made my second flip over this year using emt. It worked so much better being able to make things the right length for the sled. Emt was cheap too. Galvanized and lightweight not to mention stronger than aluminum. It worked awesome! Having a premaid skin will save you a ton of work. Making the hinges, bending the poles, drilling the holes and mounting took me a few hours. Sewing the cover took two days....Maybe more....
-
you can always find a flipover with mouse damage for cheap. Now you got the poles and brackets and hopefully a good sled. Buy a replacement top or a crappy old top and your good to flip. Made one this year for less than 20 bucks and that is with a new sled and poles, bracket. Might be able to get more come spring as the seller had about 8.

Reviving this as I am looking at trying to build something this year. Anymore information anyone would like to share? I'm at step 0 of 10 LOL.

Ok, still trying to help this thread grow new legs!
I have now come up with a design, found a place to sew the fabric for the shelter and have decided to go with 3/4 and 1/2'' EMT for the frame. The only part I'm having trouble with is the bracket that attaches to the sled and holds the frame poles.
-
I'll take some measurements and get back to ya.

I love it when a 6 year old zombie thread springs to life!

Proof of all the good stuff hidden in the annals...

Ok...
So, I figured out I can actually order the brackets for the poles from Eskimo.
https://ardisam.com/parts/structure/1164
Part number 6 from the list.
The next thing I'm trying to figure out is if these poles are made with EMT and if so is it 1/2 or 3/4?
https://ardisam.com/parts/structure/1164
Specifically I am looking to get part number 30 on the list from the link above.
If it all works I will simply need to get some snap buttons for inside the EMT and I can use this hardware to make the frame. I have some guys sewing the actual skin right now so all I need to do is get the frame built and then have everything to mount onto the sled.
Some of the sites I have been using are:

I thought you were fishing out front of the narrow side of sled in that case a letter holder would have worked. Picture a
3x5 or 4x6 index card one cut 10 to 20 degrees from length and the other cut about 45 degrees from the other bottom side with 1-2 incnch bottom width these multiple letter holders have about 5 levels just cut one out. Good luck with your build Cory

Thanks! it's going to be a crazy little monster to build but it should be fun!

the brackets from clam fishtraps on older versions are the same if you fish it out narrow side or wider side like your doing

I guess I am a little late to the party. But I have built several flip over shanties. I have used 3/4" pvc. It works very well and is less costly than emt.
I have sewn all my own covers. Not really that hard.
On one of my builds I even made my own tub out of aluminum.
My first build 50 years ago, I used copper pipe for the frame.

Beautiful. I can't wait to someday have enough time to build my own
