Tipping a Jigging Rap with Live Bait
« on: Dec 01, 2015, 10:05 PM »
Picked up a couple jigging Raps to try on perch this season. Do ya all tip them with any live bait, or no bait? I read a couple things about a minnow head or red maggots on the bottom hook. What seems to work best. Also, what colors seem to do best on perch?

Typically tip the treble hook to seal the deal.

If the fish are aggressive and hitting while your jigging, then no tipping is necessary.

minnow heads, real or plastic work good. waxies are another good bait to tip with!

Here in Michigan we use what is called a Jensen Egg. They come in many different colors. The most used color is probably red.

I usually don't tip jigging raps but when I do I'll put a minnow head or a piece of sucker meat on the treble.  A lot of guys tip the front hook with good success.  I've heard that Rapala actually recomends tipping the front hook.

LOL and I cut the front hook off of many of mine.  Some I still keep on, cuz some fifties like to head bite.

Tried the jigging Rap today at Deerfield Lake, SD trying to get bigger perch. (the lake is over populated with 7 - 8" perch) I tore up the perch with the Rap tipped with a waxie. Unfortunately they were all small, but proved to me the jigging rap works well. My buddy was fishing a Lindy ice worm and tore up the brookies but not many perch.
Looking forward to good ice on my favorite perch lake to try it out.

Brookies and perch in the same lake sounds like heaven to me.  If there were bluegill in there too, I might move up there!  Good job with the raps.

I cut the front hook off as well after losing too many fish at the bottom of the hole.  minnow head or spikes and even plastics at times work off the treble hook, depends on the day.  May end up being your go-to lure....just sayin'
I prefer a 2oz sinker for perch...when it hits 'em they won't feel a thing

Here in eastern Oregon I use a perch eye on the treble hook, it works excellent.

I caught all my fish today on w2 raps, no bait. Bass, crappie, and gills. Just kept twitching until they hit. Panfish were hooked with the treble, the bass by the rear hook.

yes-tip.   seems which ever hook is baited, that's the one the fish has in its mouth.

Interesting, no mention of cutting both head & tail hooks off, removing the treble and adding a 2" or 3" dropper, line or chain with a wide-gap single hook for the live bait or minnow head, small piece of nightcrawler, waxie, spike, perch eye, dangling piece of perch belly.   ( It's a deadly set-up.     ;)2 )
