Drill recommendations for pistol bit
« on: Nov 09, 2019, 04:49 PM »
I have been given the green light from the boss, (AKA my wife lol) to purchase a cordless drill setup.  With that said I have done pretty extensive research and have decided I want to go with the pistol bit and what I need from you all is recommendations for the drill to power it.  I'm not trying to start a Ford Chevy debate, just need some advice.  Thanks in advance for your help.  Fish On.

I used the DeWalt 996 with the 8" pistol with zero issues.....have plenty DeWalt tools already, so DeWalt made sense as I wouldn't want to get other batteries. Also the upfront cost was very low for me compared to the fuel.

Like in other posts, all the big drills with around 900+ torque are best. The 2 - 4 amp batteries most come with will drill more holes than most people will ever need

Depends where one is located. In Minnesota mid and late winter the smaller batteries usually aren't adequate.

Any of them will do. I have a dewalt mated to a clam plate/kdrill setup that will be going on it’s third year. My dewalt is going to need a new chuck this year though. The drill still works just fine but it has a hairline crack on the nut at the top of the chuck. Last year I got a 9ah battery and was very impressed with it. Biggest thing I noticed was that it did not catch at the bottom of the hole like the 5ah and 4ah ones do. Dewalt made sense to me because the local bomgaars had them on sale for $299 for the impact hammer drill combo and an additional 4ah battery. Had I not caught that deal I would have bought the Fuel.

I started with a Milwaukee 2704 drill for my auger...now I've got about 6 other Milwaukee tools and have been very happy with them all.  My buddy is a tech at a local car dealership, and he says they run Milwaukee tools all day long at work and can't be beat.

Milwaukee, I’m a electrician in heavy electrical construction. All kinds of weather , lots of hours , tools get used & abused all day everyday. You can walk on a job site with 400 men , various trades, tools are 99% miluakee.
They have no equal. I also use them to ice fish & they are the best.

All the quality drills will work for you, but I went with the Rigid for the lifetime Warranty.

4ah would be a short day for me unless I found em within the first 5 holes. For my Milwaukee, 5ah wasn’t enough so I just upgraded to 12ah. I use an 8” auger though.

Your battery must be bad. You only got 5 holes?

2nd this but would also add the makita 1090 lb drill.

I would think the drill brand decision would depend heavy on if the op has batteries from other tools he has and can use.

Exactly on a 4ah batter I've gotten 30holes in 2 feet of ice with a bar left.

Definitely depends on whether you're spinning an 8" or 6" auger. The 8" cuts almost twice the surface area of the 6".

To give you an idea, last winter I was able to cut about 450" of ice (27 holes through 17" of ice) with my Rigid Octane and 3 ah battery spinning a 6" shaver style auger. Most days that's more than enough holes for me.

The auger I use is a nils, and it cuts an 8.5in hole. I've gotten more then 5 holes spinning my 10in mora also.
