Title: The Great Sodus Bay family thread
Post by: BeenPerchin315 on Feb 10, 2021, 07:29 AM
Hey everyone wanted to try to repair our thread and make this one what everyone wants.
Was out yesterday a bit of a slow bite did manage a few. Nothing to big tho. Slush is 98% gone I’d say in the 3rd creek area.
Hope everyone stays safe and gets out and into em.

Fished out of 3rd creek yesterday. 31fow. Scratched out 60 keepers between 2 of us  . 10 to 13 inches. Tons of dinks . Had to stay 3 to 4 feet off bottom to keep the smallest of them off the hook . 4 inches black ice 4 inches of white ice . I personaly burned through 4 doz fathead. Machines out . There was slush  spots . Watched a 4 wheeler get bogged down to almost a stop. Great day to be on the ice .

Was at Sodus today west of Newark Island about 30 feet. Tons of links...Damn never thought to fish up ..duh. Got a few enough for some fish patties..Was fun getting out though. A Bit of slush in spots ice in good shape and will get better with the temps going down.

I’m planning on a Sodus trip next week. First time on the bay.  Any info on parking and local bait shop would be appreciated.  Fishing with my son and best friend.   Looking for a change in scenery from the Fulton chain.  A good pub for lunch would be good too.   Thanks in advance.

The parking is on you. There’s places at 3rd creek, margeretta rd launch, the bait shops, and the fireman’s launch. 3rd creek parking fills up fast. Fireman’s is normally next to fill up.
As for bait I would recommend Davenports on the east side of the bay, South end. The 2 bait shops are straight across the bridge from one another.
The drag will be snow dependent.
Good luck.

Going to be heading up early tomorrow morning and was wondering if people have been seeing machines all over the bay and where the best place to launch a snowmobile would be?

Haven’t personally been all over but have seen many machines out. I would feel comfortable to go most everywhere. Depending on slush you may try and launch from the bait shops. Or fireman’s launch by connelys cove. I haven’t been by the Margaretta st launch so no sure about it. 3rd is good to go but time is a factor and parking can get very tricky

Everyone is complaining about small fish this year. Well what do you expect sodus has been fished hard very hard for the last 4 winters. Do the math 1000 guys 25 or more fish per person Saturday and Sunday. Plus all the guys fishing over 30 fow or deeper killing ever fish they catch popping there bladders. Sodus is a great fishery sorry but it needs a break

Title: Harvest and Dinks
Post by: laserdude on Feb 13, 2021, 07:31 AM
Not sure if this is the place to throw out a question but let's see where it goes. I fished Irond. bay yesterday but sounds like Sodus is similar. Lot of people catching a lot of fish but most are small. I caught probably 40 fish and kept four: 10, 9, and two 8 inchers. Enough for a decent meal. I love "poor man's shrimp" and for that the dinks would  work equally well (though a bit more work)  but would need to keep more, of course. What do you folks think would be best for the fishery: I keep 15 or so dinks (6 to 7 inchers) and throw back the bigger ones or keep a fewer bigger fish. Even the 8 inchers had eggs in them.

Btw perch generally spawn between 44&54* so the temp says they have a while before spawn and if she was already spilling eggs she prolly be empty before it’s time.

She was only spilling eggs from the warmth of the shanty and stress of being out of the water. As I don't think he release her right away.

After reading his comment again I believe it was pushing some out of the proper spot to lay eggs but most likely due to internal pressure being brought up. It's not egg laying time yet but they are getting big bellies. I'm betting Sodus is like Oneida with a late March early to mid April spawn. Finger Lakes can be much later into May even. Nice fish regardless, nice colors.

Unless it changed it is illegal to clean and dismember fish sos to disguise the size and or quantity of ones catch.
And it was way more then a limit trap. And 100% I have no problem with the disposal but it was done blatant on the ice by 1 person. More then a 5gal pal of guts. Tell me he wasn’t over limit.
As well it is close to shore not sure if with in 100’.

Mine get frozen and taken to the dump along with the other household trash. I’d rather toss them to the raccoons and foxes, but...... no way they’re going in my compost or gardens. Just an invite to scavengers. I any event, leaving them on the ice is unacceptable.

Went out today slush was there. Not as bad as I thought. Looks like maybe a bit more ice then last week the snow and slush are converting. Ride out went smooth ride in not as smooth started breaking thru the crust layer. Only about 2” between the layers not froze. Good luck out there

Hey guys, I usually come up once or twice a year and walk to deep water out of 3rd creek but this year my wife and kids are coming with me and we rented a cottage on the point near the loop thus weekend. I have never accessed the ice from the north end of the bay and this year I will have a snowmobile with me. you can access in a few spots up that way. Maiden ln is at beginning of loop or there is the grain bins. Depends on where your at I figure there is some access in there private if your cottage allows. Idk how the access is at the state launch off margarita rd haven’t been out in a week and it’s normally iffy.

We ended up going out of 3rd Creek yesterday and today. Couldn't find anyplace decent to get a sled on the ice from up on the point. Fished all afternoon Saturday in 25 fow and ended up with 11 keepers between the two of us. Went out again all day today in 35 fow and managed to keep 32 with a couple slabs in the mix. Caught close to 200 dinks and just couldn't keep them away. Ice is holding up well and we found 7 to 8 inches out in the middle of the bay. Thanks to the people who offered to tow us back to shore tonight if needed (we had some snowmobile trouble, but got it running). Had a great weekend. Hope to hit some open water before the perch head out to the lake. Tight lines

Seen crazier things. But I don’t use weather bug, accu weather, weather channel or wunderground. Weather channel only as a bounce site.
Here’s accu weather 5* lower. Lol

I've noticed Accuweather runs 3-5° lower than most of the other weather sites for my area, too, and they're usually the least accurate in their extended forecasts.

WU and TWC are usually a lot closer for the 7-10 day outlook in my neck of the woods.

I prefer NOAA. They are the closest to my weather station in my yard. I have an Ambient Weather Station. Don't recall the model though.
I can view the station anywhere on a computer. It's 72 degrees and 54% RH in the house as I type.

Either way I’m starting to see a lot of skim ice on multiple bodies of water. Might have to get a few pics and post some teasers. Lol

After tomorrow's warmup its cold nights for the most part from then on. Come on ice. Can't wait to try my flip top shelter my brother gave me. Now that I am getting old and decrepit I'm breaking down and trying a shelter. I got a little frostbite on my fingertips on Sodus last year. My brother got tired of hearing me complain about my fingers freezing. So when he went to get us minnows to go perch fishing last April and they had all the ice fishing stuff half price, he picked up 2 Shappell 1 man flip shelters and gave me one. Just got done putting it together.  Quite a challenge when the pictures on the instructions are so tiny. Fortunately I found better pics on their website that I was able to blow up big enough to see.  Come on ice.

You will not regret having a portable shelter     My fishing time trippled (or more) when I got mine. Find a little heater and enjoy! On cold days I put a can of gel fuel like the ones the restaurants use in a 2 gal bucket and throw off the coat.  Cover it with some wire mesh and use it to warm your lunch

How did Sodus make out with this snow storm?  I heard there was 3 - 4 inches ice before it hit.

I'm in Williamson and I easily have 18+" so I'm going to say the bay got pounded as well

That section is now mostly frozen but its tricky keeping your balance with all the old footsteps and tracks.  I'm with you on slush that isn't froze yet though.  Not as young as I used to be.

Whats the key to finding bigger fish out there? Last year while I was out I sorted thru tons of dinks for a handful of keepers. Deeperwater, bigger bait, keep moving? Any tips appreciated.

In my experience. Best I've done is use a bigger bait and don't drop it to the bottom. Try getting the bigger fish to come up a few feet. If still mostly dinks, move. Maybe not even that far. 50 yds and try again. Some days you'll get a few jumbos and need another small move to pick off the jumbos and keep moving. Every day is different.

Great question. I was wondering the same. Fished Saturday and caught some nice perch but so many small ones. My question is: are the perch ever off points or other shallow structure, or just in the deeper part of the bay?
Thanks for any info.

After hearing all the great reports from guys fishing this fall from boats, I really thought we would hear the same from reports on the ice.  I've only been out once so far but still had to go through a lot of small ones to get some keepers.  And that seems to be what others are finding so far as well.

Was way better than i would have guessed from reports, maybe it had enough time to freeze again, very shallow snow heading out from the marina's near the point. lots of frozen mess to drag over/around from sleds heading out through the slush earlier this week. Cold and windy though, did manage to bring home 9 decent ones, really only had a few small ones today.

Well. The fishing was a bit slow for me today. Quite a similar ice report give or take7”+/- soild with some crap on top. Plus the snow and slush. Looked like everyone else was targeted around the channel big group out of 3rd few hundred yards west from the north end of eagle island. And another group off the tip of loop.

Good luck if you try for it. Gonna b a little wet

No problem. If going to the Speigle/ grassy point area I normally come up from bait shops the hill sucks from over there. And not always the best ice at shore haven’t used it this year.
As always be careful and use your spud.

Ps. Not sure about the parking out on the road. Last year was last I was there and about 9 when I arrived there were 2/3 spots open in the little lot. And I do mean little.

Went out off the trestle area yesterday for a few hours mid morning.  Mostly small ones and not very aggressive at all.  Ice was great, lots of trails to follow through the snow, beautiful day to be out.  Not many folks out that way.
