On our way to a 4 day ice fishing vacation tonight, a bear (who should be hibernating) runs into the side of my buddy's truck as we're traveling at highway speeds. Poor bear didn't make it. We dragged it off of the highway and pulled it into the medium. Luckily we weren't hurt and there was minor damage to the truck, but what the heck would a bear be out in the middle of january in the mountains of western maryland.

Bears will come out of hibernation from time to time I'm not sure of the reason(S). A friend of mine is a volunteer naturalist at the trailside zoo and museum at Bear Mountain State Park (NY.) and he has told me stories of the bears there coming out into the main exhibition area during the winter.
Glad to hear you and your buddy are alright. Sorry the bear did not make it.

Bears dont sleep all winter and will make apperances from time to time...glad you guys were OK, but I have to ask...did you keep the bear?

There's a lot of things that can bring a bear out of hibernation for a bit. Lucky you guys are OK- too bad about the bear.

No. We didn't keep it. Didn't have room for it anyway. It was a decent sized one that we estimate at around 200-230 lbs.

Alright wise arse the Bears won just as many playoff games as the Packers did and they beat the Vikings. In reality it was a joke of a season. IMO if the Bears fail to make the playoffs next season Jerry and Lovie will be looking for work at this time next year.

I would have made room for that bear...an easy bear rug without the pain of getting it out of the woods. How did the truck fair?

I live in the heart of bear country in the poconos and at times i see bear in the winter. I beleive that they are males, I think the pregnet femails stay in there dens. But males just take long naps along logs or anyplace and wake up time to time.

The truck fared surprisingly well. It hit around the left rear tire and only put a small dent right behind the splash guard(which was cracked). It made a heck of a thud, but must have hit mostly on the rear tire.

I work at a ski area and every year we find tracks in the snow,I have been told that the bears will come out of hibernation to feed,I guess if they dont bulk up enough they have to seek food to make the winter.although im sure there are a number of reasons they come out,a few years back I seen a bear the last week of jan. but this bear was out because of a construction project,they were drilling and blasting in the area where his den was.

Typically male bears don't stay in hibernation all through the winter. Females giving birth will.

I see them all winter long on the nicer days and they tend to get in the most trouble because there is no food except in trash bins.

The one you guys had run in to you was probably heading to a yard where he knows the deer and birds are being fed.
