Title: Schroon lake
Post by: kb on Jan 15, 2012, 08:06 PM
How's Schroon doing?  I've been invited up to Schroon to fish, and was wondering how it was doing.  Does it have any ice?  I'm about 2 1/2 hours south and would like to know if it is worth the trip

Thanks

Is using smelt for a bait permitted on Schroon Lake ???
Title: Re: Schroon lake
Post by: JJ on Jan 16, 2012, 09:15 AM
Yes, smelt are allowed on Schroon, but I don't think anyone sells them now.
Title: Re: Schroon lake
Post by: roundlakeNY on Jan 16, 2012, 09:16 AM
you can use them for bait but can not take them off the ice.
Title: Re: Schroon lake
Post by: JJ on Jan 16, 2012, 09:28 AM
Actually, you can't bring them back to Schroon or to another lake to use as bait; but you can bring them home to eat. ;)

4 wheelers?  Only if you enjoy fishing them out of the drink.   Worst, most irregular ice conditions I have seen on this lake, and I've been fishing Schroon since the early eighties.

Hows the ice off of Fowler Rd.in the cove to the left where the inlet is
Title: Re: Schroon lake
Post by: SchrnLker on Jan 16, 2012, 08:04 PM
Should be good in Keplers bay,  just stay away from inlet.  Don't assume anything this year, always check.  Ice conditions vary greatly so far.  If we had a week of the kind of weather we had this weekend, 17below,  things would even out, but that's not what is forecasted.

Last couple days a guy was fishing out in front of the boat launch behind Stewarts,  today a group was fishing the narrows.   South end is now frozen,  but probably not safe yet.   Might go drill some test holes tomorrow.

Thanks for the update. Excuse my ignorance but I`m new to this lake. By `narrows` which is often referred to here do you mean the narrow part in the center of the lake? Sorry, I`m a little confused `cause I heard guys talking about `narrows` somewhere at the south end.

cant go wrong with suckers between 6" to 8" and if you can jig up some smelt while you are there better yet.  if you have a fish finder find what depth the smelt are traveling at set just above them ,alon with setting deep i also set a couple just under the ice about 3' down i know most will say its a salmon set but i have gotten just as many lake trout doing this because the smelt travel just under the ice alot of the time ,plus you may score on some salmon as well. good luck

Lake George may not be a bad bet if you're just looking to get the species under your belt and get discouraged at Schroon. That is, if we get safe ice. The laker dudes I hang with do well  jigging anything big and white. Pimples, tube jigs, crippled herring, etc...
Here's a link to our trout boards if you care to take a gander. http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?board=42.0 (http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?board=42.0)
There are a few good laker threads that should help.
Good luck in your mission

^ +1

if you don't have a fish finder and have to just guess then 20-30' down is a good bet in my experience. i usually set most if not all my tipups just under the ice for salmon and pick up a decent number of lakers that way too. smelt are the way to go if you can jig them

KB, if you have an I Phone you can freeze any image and save to your camera roll and it becomes a stores pic. Then you simply upload the image to your photobucket account and post it like any other pic on IS.

Thanks for the feedback, I looked further into the navionics on their website and you can actually get some pretty sweet software from them for your computer.  What sucks is that the region including ny just barely missing including Wisconsin, so I wouldnt be able to use it for plotting when I go home for musky fishing, and I have a feeling its pricey.  I think I may just get the app.  Thanks again.

Here's the link for the software if any is interested http://www.navionics.com/LakeCharts_HMPlatinum.asp

I have Navionics for the iPhone as well. It's awesome. Downloaded it because I actually work on the king in the summer. For $9.99 I think it gave me every significant body of water in the U.S. Alaska and all marine waters too. Actually a great deal. Their computer and gps programs and rather expensive but also very good.

P. S. anyone venturing out on Schroon this weekend? Want to know how the ice is.

Fished the North end of schoon yesterday from 7am-2pm. We fished the North end and went out from Fowlers rd. passing shower as we got the gear out of the truck but that was the end of the rain for the day. The shore ice had some water but the quads were running back and fourth with no problems. We set up in 2-80 ft of water and had perch action as soon as we put the tip ups in. Most of the perch caught were small and very small but we did manage to get 14 over 11 inches. We worked the deeper water looking for some bigger perch or some lakers but had no luck. We had a few big baits out in shallow water and we were able to catch a few small pike. All the pike were caught on small perch that we jigged up. The perch were so think that in some holes you could look down and see hundreds of them swim by the hole. Between four of us we probably caugh 100 perch easy but like i said they were small and very small. When we left at 2 there was about 3 inches of water on the ice and the holes were starting to open up from the water running into them. Lake should be fine ice wise since it should have locked back up last night and will be making ice tonight. We had 11 inches where we setup and seen people fishing near Clark island, narrows and Eagle point. Will be back up next week for sure and try for some lakers and salmon this time. First time fishing the home lake for the year and hopefully many more before ice out. Tight lines

Snowlt...We're headed to Schroon this weekend for the first time being  the annual trip is generally to LG. Your earlier post was helpful - thanks. while we're not sure of the exact location of the house we rented it does look like it is just south of Adirondack, and the inlet from Mill Creek (perfect spot hopefully). Was planning on walking out about 200 yards to be in 20-60 FOW being we love the Lakers, but also want to give the Salmon a shot. Reading the posts makes me think we don't even need to get out that far. Curious what you think if you don't mind. Thanks.

Nice people at Crossroads and Mike sells active live bait.  Breakfast/lunch are real bargains, especially the 1/2 subs that look like most large subs.  We were up there on Tuesday for bait and then stopped on the way home for a late lunch of the 1/2 subs.  If you get the horseradish spread just be prepared as it is hot, but goes great with any meat.  Plenty of information on fishing and what to use.

what is the access at eagle point anyway?
DO you just park on the side of the road there and walk down what looks to be a house and beach right there on the point?  ???

and is the ice safe there on the south end?

If the campgrounds gates are open you can park int the camp. They usually plow in there for the people to use that access. I have not been up there this year so if the state is to cheap they may not plow it.

That wouldn't surprise me, looked thin from the pic I saw, big head, thin body.  Still, 32" laker is nice

i saw an article in the press republican that said a 26 pound northern was caught out of there.  Apparently another guy caught a 4 pound laker that had been bittin nearly in two, and a few minutes later they caught the northern.  there are no pictures of it though.  Anyone hear anything?

There have been 2 20lb+ pike and and upper teens pike, that I know about, taken this season.  Add that to several large ll salmon, 5lb+, (one by me )  as well as some large lake trout.  This is turning out to be a pretty good ice season, compared to the last few.

Schroon Lake ice conditions remain good.  Edges nice and solid.  We have not been too mild this week, although temps today are in forties.  Nights have been in the teens.  One word of caution though.  The area behind Stewarts, to the right of the boat launch, is very bad.  The open water from the dock bubbler has connected with the Rodgers Brook outlet.  Go to the left of the launch, nice and solid.

This lake makes me pull my hair out.  Two trips lately- 1 shorty.  I'm going to give up the Pimple and try a Berkley Gulp Smelt.  Marked plenty of fish Sat. but no takers.
