Does anyone use Max Traps
« on: Jan 21, 2009, 04:43 PM »
I think I am going to buy 5 of the Hunter tip-ups from Max Traps. They look like really good quality for the price of them. Just wondering if anyone uses them and how do they hold up?

I'm pretty sure they are helping to sponsor the pike derby here in Belgrade next month.  From what I hear the traps are high quality.  I might pick up a couple myself to check them out.

I ordered a set of five all spooled with line, pretty much the same thing as a Jacktrap. Just cheaper. I am going to get them this weekend if you wanna take a ride.

I was planning on going Sunday anyway. He is building them as we speak. Only 105.00 for 5 traps. Made exactly like the Jacks.

Why are the ones with metal spools the cheapest?

I was wondering the same thing. I think its because they're a shorter trap.

Bought 5 last year, they work great.  He even puts a hole by the flag catch to put your hook in when you are done, it is great for travel.

I am glad to hear that they worked well. I am supposed to pick mine up this weekend but I think I am coming down with a real nasty cold. I wanted to try them out on Sunday too, figures.

my buddy has a set he bought a few years ago. very good trap for the money. only drawback is the plastic reels break in the - temps if you bang them too much. he transports them in a backpack he wears and hasnt had trouble since. like the jacktraps they are very sensitive.

Thats the reason I opted for the Hunter trap that comes with the metal reel

I have several of the Hunter models ....they are the smallest ones the guy makes...and they have the metal wheels

They are very compact and easy to carry...like fully down inside a 20 inch pack basket...not sticking up out the top like just about all my other traps do...The larger models have plastic reels...BTW

They are all very well made....nice wood....beefy.... But I wish he would make the bigger ones with metal reels though....they are basically the same style as a Jack trap, Allagash, Moosehead or Thompson.

When set in deep snow these small ones can get lost easier because when set they are like only a foot off the ice...just like a beaver dam stayle can...no snow? no worries.....also becaue they are small the spring for the flag is bent into a very small arc and when they trigger that tight spring can go off like a shotgun!...I'm not sure if this scares fish or not? That is somehow telegraphed down the line?    I think it might....particularly it might for a shallow trap rigged for brookies....Togue?...probably not  as much of a problem... Anybody have any thoughts on that?

I notice that some larger traps, even expensive ones by other manufacturers, sometimes have quite a violent "pop" when they are triggered....It's not that they are'nt sensitive...it just that some traps go off more gently than others...Tip and Spins and Heritage Lakes are sensitive and they are also very quiet because of the the way they are triggered....They have the same mechanism.....these small Hunters really go off. So that is something to think about...if you think it might scare the fish....

I also think that the groove and the split ring that supposedly helps to stop wind flags where you hook the spring and flag actually makes this worse......it kinda makes setting them a little harder too....

I have been using the biggest model he makes for 3 years. No complaints.
