bait in the Bangor area
« on: Jan 14, 2015, 04:33 PM »
Was wondering where I can get Smelt's for this weekend Bangor and North to Island Falls close to the highway.  The store in town opens at 6am and we will get there long after their closed.  Trying to get some before but if not we'll make due.  Thank you for the advice.

Burn's Bait in Bangor is probably the best bet for almost any hour of the day.  Old Town Trading Post has already been mentioned.  Two Rivers Canoe and Tackle in Medway (right off the highway on your way up) had them when I used to go by that way too, but they don't open up very early if I recall.

Does anyone know if Crommett's Bait in West Enfield is open this year?  I know that Mr. Crommett passed away, but they were keeping the bait shop open after that.  That was always my go-to spot if I was headed North from Orono.

Seconding what Outdoorsman said. Those are all great options. I drove past Crommetts last weekend and didn't see any signs of activity, but that was in the afternoon on my way home and I wasn't paying much attention. I haven't heard anything about them this year.

I tried calling Bakers Dozen(formerly Crommets) last week and the number had been disconnected. Pretty sure they are done.

They always did before. The only ones we ever lost were due to what we call "The Dogsled Incident"

In my opinion Old Town Trading Post is going to be your most convenient location while heading north on the interstate . Not far off the exit and easy to find with a dysarts next door for good food and gas if needed. The smelts I got there on Friday was very healthy and survived a long ride in the truck and then another long snowmobile ride across the lake the next day.
