I want to build a sled this off season. Let's see some of the custom sleds here.
I need ideas!
-
I don't have a pic but a friend of mine built a sled from plywood. It was 3' X 3" and 2'1/2 deep. The top opened on hinges to reveal smaller compartments-plywood again, the large section would hold 3 buckets side buy side. One was for lanturn storage-had three sections inside. There was a footrest on the rear and you could sit on the lid-riding backwards, while being towed buy a machine. There was a metal towbar or trailer tounge on the front. This thing was slik-but it was heavy. Last I knew he was look'n to off it! Pm me if you are interested in more details.
-
I'm watching this thread for ideas also....maybe just to pimp my sled ;D
-
i can't! photobucket site is down! ;D
ok here it is. i will post better pics.

You got the right idea You just didnt go far enough OK OK just my ideas,Up north we have to walk to most of the lakes in the land of a thousand lakes some you can not even have a scadoo on so you have to be portable. What your sleigh needs is a top that will support three sides, and a roof.Something to get you out of the wind. I am not sure how to post a pic or i would. I am in the process of building the wife one so we can be a team LOL LOL Wayner.
Your skies are the right kind.Your sleigh is a little long I am not sure if a 63 year old fart like me could pull this very far.I would have to wax those skies real good
I did try the plastic skies at first but they are to flimsey and they bend,They do slide good and was easy to pul though. But i think a set of down hill skies cut to 5 feet works better You also have a great stance the skies should be between 16 inches and 22 inches apart for a good travel
Just my opinion for we have had a lot of snow north of the 49th

my sled is about 5 feet long, to fit large tip-ups, and the bait bucket. the bucket is on the back, because it will bog down when in the front. i don't use a portable shelter, so it's not an issue. the sled is 18" wide. just rebuilt it, and it's tough to get into my apartment. i live on the top floor.
be careful of the size. myself, and 2 friends built them too big in the past, and had to cut them down. ;D
-
OK i am at a loss How do i post a picture or pictures wayner
-
get a photobucket account first.(photobucket.com) then you can post pics.
-
just curious.. How does electrical conduit work as ski's ? Thought about making a sled using it, But wasn't sure of how well it would work in deeper snow. I have used an old set of water ski's. They worked pretty good as they were wide enough to support the weight on top of the snow.
-
i've seen posts with conduit, i'll see if i can find the thread. i got away from water skis. snow skis are better. ;D
-
Bummer.... my Jet sled has developed a wear hole in the rear corner.... I pull it by hand, never on pavement >:(....any ideas for repairs

Bummer.... my Jet sled has developed a wear hole in the rear corner.... I pull it by hand, never on pavement >:(....any ideas for repairs
Buy a new jet sled, set the old one inside of it. Should cover the hole nicely..lol
Seriously though no ideas here.
-
Not sure, But could you patch it with a fiberglass repair kit ??
-
Jimmy,
I bought some two part epoxy, I think it was called plastiweld, to repair a plastic washing machine tub and the stuff worked great. I put some tape on one side, smeared it on, let it cure.....then did the same to the other side. I will try to find it to get the exact name for you, but I bought it at Phillips Hardware in Colonie.
-
Might try this.. http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=37730.0 (http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=37730.0)

hey jimmy i had the same thing happen to mine. get you some old broke plastic from around the house i used an old broken bucket. then use a torch or ligther and melt it and let it drip on the hole in your sled on the inside. then use a putty knife and smooth it out. it worked for me. looks goofy but alot cheaper then a new one. you might have to do it more then once to get it complety filled in. i use mine for duck hunting walk ins too so my has to be water proof. thats what i did anyways hope this helps.

They are trying to figure out how to post the pics ::)
-
Thanks for the info guys. I will post my pics here soon.
-
OK i think just think maybe i got it right This is my latest creation,,
BUT FIRST I must appologize I laughted so hard when i first heard of steel tubbing as runners but then i thought that would be great if you didnt have three or four feet of snow like we do so if you had only 2 or 3 inches then i think that would be great SORRY about the laughter
This is almost finished except for the plastic skies I have to get rid of them and get real skies Thats the best in 2 or 3 feet of snow covered lake the fronts on the plastic skies bends and sinks in that much snow
Get this thread back on track. More pics please!

We decided to build a couple of sleds for overnight trips.Salmoncandy built a stove into his along with rod storage etc.I put in a solar charging system for the vexilar along with led lighting for the interior. Both sleds were built out of aluminum and have UHMW runners. We talked to alot of guys about the hitch setup and built our own spring hitchs. The only thing I would change is the front angle-should have rounded it off rather than have it at 45degrees.Blows alot of snow up in deep powder but pulls great everywhere else.

-
Nice sled looks like it needs a body raize or widder skies under the weight of the load for the size of skies ,or is this an exceptional light powder snow.. ???? how many dollars .
Here in CANADA it is against the law to tow a sleigh behind a snow machine with a rope . I am not to sure how inforced this law is, but this is the case. It must have a solid connection if it is going to be towed by a motorized vehicle. Most of us in the eastern end of ONTARIO have to go out on most of the lakes pulling our ice shelters by hand This is the case with my lattest creation I will post more pics to keep this thread alive and well lets have some more pics of homebuilds thanks wayner
-
The first full sized picture had two mistakes first the skies were to close together and it was tippie so we took it apart and used a piece of 3/4 inch plywood for a base and this helped to widden the stance
Second problem is the plastic skies they have to go for they are to plyable going to use a pair of older wooden skies downhill of cource and cut them down to 62 inches. This is a picture of the shelter in the collapsed mode and bunjied ready for travel(http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk16/vette59jdwl/ice-shacks/DSC00085.jpg)e pics to keep this thread alive and well lets have some more pics of homebuilds thanks wayner
-
As you can see from the last pic there is room to change the stance of the skies if need be. I also made cut outs with a hole saw so that my power awger can be bunjied down as well. Two paols one for the minow bucked with a lide so that if i did have an accident i wouldnt lose everything. The other pail for rags and some tools like screwdriver pliers and a few wrenches also my lunch goes here LOL LOL and the pail could be a seat at another hole I also made cutouts in the totte box so i could hang, hangers to hang a milk crate to haul the motor in when the awger is apart, PS any ????just ask
(http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk16/vette59jdwl/ice-shacks/DSC00087.jpg)
-
Polley I hope i dont tramp on your toes or hurt your fellins ,I see your at the opposite end of NEW YORK state as me You in the SOUTH and me in the NORTH,Well if the snow gets any deeper down your way ,your going to have to swap out the 2x4 for 2x6's or 2x8's.Your sleigh is the best idea that i have seen it must pull easy If you have a lot of wind down your way Here is what you have to do Build a base and put sides on it.like at(http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk16/vette59jdwl/DSC00038.jpg)tached
Then when you raiseMight try this.. http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=37730.0 (http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=37730.0)
it you have to reinforce the (http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk16/vette59jdwl/DSC00035-2.jpg)runners
-
This is my lid made of 3/4 inch plywood and i used hockey sticks broken ones from an arena man they are made of ash or oak you have to pre dril(http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk16/vette59jdwl/DSC00038-1.jpg)l them believe me
-
I cut out the ends of the box so i could use 1 inch strapping and bend and also close the lid,to hold a milk box and my motor.I have a 6 inch auger an8 inch awger and a 10 inch awger depending on ice conditions w(http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk16/vette59jdwl/DSC00034.jpg)e still have 17 to 18 iches of good ice up here
-
yeah, i found out about the deep snow at the dead sea. i saw a few guys get a good laugh at me trying to pull it though 18" of snow. i decided, after about 15 minutes to get my heart rate under 500, that i needed 8" of clearence. a word to the wise, your sled looks a little tall. as i stated, i cut my first sled down by a foot, after dumping my bait on the ice. ever see a guy cut a hole in three seconds with a hand auger though 12 inches of ice?lol also, you'll have to hang on in a good wind. mine gets sideways in a good wind on slick ice. ;D
-
Hey Gamedog glad you like it.Here is the only pic I could find of the hitch.I'm sure I have more somewhere but goodluck finding it.(http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj57/gutchucker/skimmer/skimmer029.jpg)

-
Post some pics Gamedog would like to see it.I don't see why you couldn't adapt the spring hitch to a quad. It's just supposed to take some shock out of the start and stop and I don't think I'd run without it.

-
Pooley, I think your most recent one is sort of what I'm looking for. I'll be sure to get a start to finish series of pics as I go along.
Who else has pics?
-
NOW NOW POOLEY I do like those custom European birch handles. But man how many fishin lines do you guys down south use I dont thinki the fish has a chance,When it comes to hard times up north we use dyno-mite LOL LOL Gone fishin
-
well that depends where you fish. 5 tip-ups and 2 handlines for most places, but 15 tip-ups and 2 handlines on lake champlain. ;D
-
Now thats one lo0ng trip for you to go fishin We had minus 6 last night It tightened the ice up real nice got 3 lake trout and on bulhead.Went to the shoals to fish for white fish got 5 perch just got home its 20 to 12 goin to lay down get rested up for monday mornin good fishin wayner
-
Love the bullhead! I think custom antler handles are more in order.
-
fishinjim, do those wheels slow you down at all when theres snow?? looks like a good idea
-
Love the bullhead! me as well especially the little black ones with white bellies . Its sort of funny how life goes I was watching a program this evening on STAR-CHOICE called wing over CANADA and they fished the ChurchHill River blindfolded people on the trip ,They fried up pike and piceral or what we call wallete(they are of the perch familly) Well the pike one out 4 to 2 no crap.
I dont use handles on my box or lid I use the lide to hold my shelfer ???Made a couple of modifications tonight also wish to try your idea with the rod holders but thats going to have to wait till wendsday. Heading for HOWE ISLAND 5 in the am going after walleye and northern mike and the odd Muskey..
Also working on downriggers for my small alluminum boat 12 footer just for the back lakes I dont like the 3/8 inch stainless rods for booms ,got to change that to 5.8 alluminum ,,now i am not sure how to hang the wheels>>>OH well ill figure something out HAPPY EASTER to all and happy fishin guys
-
No, there only about 1/4 inch below the skis (they spin on the snow) and when you hit ice patches it helps it roll. It will roll fast enough to catch up to you.
-
Not to sure what happened to this tread but were still fishin trout are hamering the dead smelt on bottom of loughbour lake ontrio canada wendsday and thursday going down to minus 6 at night should tighten everything back up thanks pooley for the rod holder idea will post pics tomorrow after i get back from fishin lol lol wayner in Kingston Ontario CANADA
-
I like the idea of wheel. May have to do that to mine this summer.

-
heres mine in production. i apreciate all your guys ideas as you can see i am putting them to use :)

After a few failed attempts at building a downhill ski based sled, I built this one based on another members sled. It pulls sooooo easy on the ice. My only problem is, this year I bought a 583 Skidoo to pull my gear out, and I don't think the sled will hold up on the trail.

Now, Ron, please don't take this the wrong way, but I think you either need to take less gear out on the lake, or get yourself a larger sled! ;)

HA! You should see Porters sled.
Went with a simple boxon skis design. All the painting is done. I need to bring it in the house so the shanty bumper stickers will have a chance to adhere....

I have to agree with that statement. The whole set up kind of reminds me of Jed Clampet's truck on the Beverly Hillbillies. Seems to me all that's missing is granny on top in a rocking chair. Although if you go fishing with a friend like Ron you don't have to bring any of your own stuff. LOL
-
Nice sleds guys makes me think to back when I was a my dad built sleds like these ones. I just could not see myself draging them around the ice hats off to you guys you should have legs like draft horses come spring time. Good luck and be safe.
-
gotta admit some of these look like the clammpets made them.but I was jethro in the early years and made one like these too !! heres our new version just in time for christmas.we copied from santa. ;D we used 1'' galv. steel tubing for main frame and main support bases.ground tubing in semi-circle at connection points to house other supports and braised together.used 1/4 '' solid steel rods for lateral supports.and finally 1/2 thick by 2 '' wide pieces of teflon strips for runners.found skis to dig in in deep uneven snow...say plowwed parking lots.killer on skis.our runners are mounted up the front 18 or so inches.teflon is self cleaning..i mean that no waxing or loss of slipperyness when worn down thur painted surface.rocks, ice and parking lots are real hard on skis.the frame weights less than 10lbs and as we normally fish w. 3-5 guys and all equipment can be loaded w/ maybe 200lb of stuff.pulls easily by one man on good ice and a couple guys up hills and in deep snow.(http://i446.photobucket.com/albums/qq183/a1professionalguide/IMG_0571_2.jpg [IMG]http://i446.photobucket.com/albums/qq183/a1professionalguide/IMG_0574.jpg) (http://i446.photobucket.com/albums/qq183/a1professionalguide/IMG_0573.jpg)

Hey there! Im new to this site. Its pretty cool. Weve had some nasty weather, so Ive had time to build this sled. Now i need safe ice!!!.Tell me what you think.(http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/pp129/fishfinder22/100_2056.jpg)
-
Hey SUB Nice Sled. Welcome (finally got you on the site) You forget the bottle of Crown and the 30 pack!
-
 Thanks Man. Cant wait to go up north and hit the ice. You bring the beer, Ill bring the crown. If you can think of anything else to go in the box let me know. I just put wrenches and allen keys in there for the auger. Still lookin for a good compact shovel to throw in there. Bringin a lantern in case we got out at night for cusk.

Those are some cool lookin sleds!

I dont have an ATV or Snowmobile, so I was thinking about finding some backpack straps and hooking them to a rope to tow my sled. I figure it would free up my hands to carry something more important like beer. Anyone have a setup like this. Id like to see it. ;D

hunter specialties make a inexpensive deer dragging harness. try that, i own one, and i'm going to try it.

Thanks I will!

Here is mine so far. I am going to add some rod holders and bungie holders.

my sled is about 5 feet long, to fit large tip-ups, and the bait bucket. the bucket is on the back, because it will bog down when in the front. i don't use a portable shelter, so it's not an issue. the sled is 18" wide. just rebuilt it, and it's tough to get into my apartment. i live on the top floor.

be careful of the size. myself, and 2 friends built them too big in the past, and had to cut them down. ;D
wheres the sled?

I dont have an ATV or Snowmobile, so I was thinking about finding some backpack straps and hooking them to a rope to tow my sled. I figure it would free up my hands to carry something more important like beer. Anyone have a setup like this. Id like to see it. ;D
hunter specialties make a inexpensive deer dragging harness. try that, i own one, and i'm going to try it.
My only concern with the harness is how i'm strapped to the sled. I thinking about quick release shoulder and belt in the event of an accident. Also, I was thinking about using a quick release waist belt. FWIW..Be careful being tied directly to your sled.
-
I think im going to go with a deer haul harness i found at llbean for 8 bucks

Made some additions to my sled for more room inside. Thanks for the idea Unoman.

I built this sled for those days when I don't want to haul my portable shanty out, but just needed a windbreak and a heater
The goal was to make it as light as possible so I built it out of 1/4" Luan, with spruce 1/2 " 1" framing. Even though it rides on 2 downhills ski's, it's also sloped like a toboggan so it will ride up on top of deeper snow. These pics show it with just a rope attached, but I also have a detachable metal hitch I use with the snowmobile.
I wanted to be able to stow everything inside and tie down my auger so I can zip across the ice without worrying about losing anything.
The sunflower heater sits down inside the main compartment with the tank resting horizontally in a cradle, and is perfect for keeping the seat and hands warm, and also for cooking on. Before anyone asks... Yes it IS safe with the heater, and the sides don't get hot enough at all. (I'm never very far from it anyway)
The poles holding the windbreak are PVC pipe, carefully glued in sections so it's easy to assemble and all comes apart to fit inside. I sewed up the fabric for the windbreak using a water resistant ripstop nylon fabric, but now wish I would have gone with something a little heavier.

I have a 2 man set up style hut, I fold about 100lbs of gear in there and it is harder then hel* to pull if there is even a little bit of snow on the ice, and if there is slush forget about it. anyideas of how I can make the pull with a little more ease?

thats the only prob, I cant really lighten the load, my shelter is beter part of 50lbs my gater weighs 28lbs and a full bucket of minows is about 20. not to mention my heater, tip-ups, poles, chair, and other accessories like food and coffee

The types of sleds that IceLIne and ohioholepuncher are much easier to pull than a tub type of sled.
Re-distribute your gear onto two of those types of sleds. Have a buddy pull the other, or connect the two
sleds together--still the same amount gear/weight, just 1/2 as much downward pressure. Get a lighter shelter.
Put your bait in a smaller bucket during transport. When at site, fill the larger bucket with lake water and
transfer your bait to that (be careful about shocking them with a big temp change). Take snacks vs small stove
and cooking stuff if you take it. Gators are great, but they are not light. Put that hand crank onto your Nils bit.
Just some ideas. Ice fishermen didn't always pull a couple hundred ponds of gear out onto the ice.
MD
Oh yea, don't forget the flasher. Leave the fish cam at home.

ohioholepuncher, Love working with PVC. Nice sled!

if you live in the burbs, drive around on big garbge day. or ask some friends.

how does it pull with snow on the ice?
way easier then just the shack alone with the ski's. Dont use the rope they give you if you pull by hand, put a longer one on it. I have the hitch to for pulling by sled. around here we get tons of snow and pulling by hand is generally sucky no matter what you do.

Try a ski shop they usually have miss matched pair due to breakage o out dated stuff they will get rid of cheap. I will keep my eyes and ears open will let you know if I find any.
-
Pvc end caps 1 1/2 in, screwed into the ski's. 4 screws
To find a cheep pair of ski check goodwill or craigs list.

Hey fishinjim what's with the wheels? Are they removable? Nice setup.
-
Nothing special, the steel frame came with my Clam via an estate auction. Pulls nice on ice and such but is a bear in the deep snow, unless using a quad or snowmobile. The shanty holds the basics inside of it. Being its a good 10 inches or so inside, it allows for some tall stuff. I pull the board that covers the holes from the side I place upward, and use it for buckets and such. If we are using a quad and have my brothers Shapell, we lay it flat on the clam. I have noticed as of late that with the snow as deep as we have and the slush, that I had to stop using the steel frame. The clam pulls well closed, but I have been pulling it open with both sides on the ice if its a long walk. The gear just lays flat inside of it at that point.
Jeff
Steel Frame, Angle iron holds the clam from sliding off.

Wow nice job on the sleds !!! Gives me a few ideas. I have the basic components and the box I am currently using is custom make but too big. It's the size of a coffin. :o I have used it for about 5 years but currently changing it, smaller. I could rent out space. :D I will post some pics of my creation when it is completed.

Bummer.... my Jet sled has developed a wear hole in the rear corner.... I pull it by hand, never on pavement >:(....any ideas for repairs
Hey Jimmy, Been there done that!! Tore a hole in my portable the second time out, a $300 plus two man AUGH!!! First epoxy or fiberglass the hole to seal it up. Next go to the local snowmobile shop and buy the nisest new machine they have, woops got carried away, that'swhat we all want to do!!. Now go to the parts counter and tell themm you want to but a set of slide rail slides that have been in stock and not selling and your noy gonna pay much cause they're just settin there as dead stock, that parts important to the wallet! Make sure you get some with the long thin tab on the front, most have it, this will contoure to the front of the sled. Bolt the thin tab to the front and bend em down and work your way back with bolts and fender washers inside. Make shure to countersink flathead screws from the bottom so they don't wear.I put four of them on mine as it's big and it pulls and tracks great!! You can drag that baby down the road with the truck buddy. I'll try to send pics of my other sled later for the thread. Good luck!! The Hittman

Finally finished my new sled!! Luan sides with a padded seat, very comfy. Only fished with it once so far, still need to build some racks for poles and tip-ups to keep everything organized. Adding brackets to the side for the auger and one to the back to hold the pop-up blind. Probably some exterior rod holders too for dead-sticking.

I did think about adding some lights for those night trips on the ice. This summer it will get more work done to it I'm sure. The fish finder will be added along with a 12v power source and some interior dividers to keep everything in its place. No reason to leave out the lights after that!
And if I'm super lucky I might get to add a quad to pull it with. ;D

Water skies or skiing skis better to use for building a sled? Is it alright to screw from the bottom to attach them to the box?

It may develop into a snofox pretty quick ;)
Thanks there "JC", I owe it all to "Smitty" for the idea, I went with the 2"x8" uprights
for the snow clearance & the height to be able to sit comfortably when on the prowl
for those "Jumbo's" ;D, I also went with the 5 1/4 round deck boards for cross supports
for stability, when I find the spot I want to set over the "Guide" will slide right off
(after I remove the bungees) I also varnished all of the wood & sprinkled sand on the
"top side" to help when transporting (no sliding) with the "Icegator" & all of the other
collection of all the things I think I need ??? :-\..... It pulls like a jem across the "Hard water".
I will need to add the wheels (That are easily remove when it hits the ice) In the grass though ,It drags like full cooler of adult beverages through hot beach sand on a 95 deg.July afternoon ::)

My new one in the works.

OK here is what I have come up with in the off season
the pics were from my phone sorry if they suck
(http://i704.photobucket.com/albums/ww48/hulv/empty.jpg)
this is the "sled" or mortar mixing bucket I bought from the home depot. $11.99
(http://i704.photobucket.com/albums/ww48/hulv/runners.jpg)
here are the UHMW runners I put on it got em from EBay $19.00 for 10 pcs. I only used 4 of em so I have extras to replace them with I carefully laid it all out and everything is straight counterbored and even
(http://i704.photobucket.com/albums/ww48/hulv/chair.jpg)
well I like to be comfortable so I got a gamma seal lid $7.00 and attached a boat seat $35.00 to it I have found a short bucket to attach it to (hard to bend down.... something is in the way??? might have something to do with the BEER laughs the old lady while I am in full ice gear trying buckets in the livingroom) the gamma seal ring stays on the bucket and I can remove the seat by spinning it on or off and I have built in waterproof storage for the electronics
(http://i704.photobucket.com/albums/ww48/hulv/cupholder.jpg)
and last I have a couple of kitty litter buckets freebie attached and a little shelf (freebie.... you laugh at me I am cutting up the cutting board) to hold my Joe and some bait and the such the kitty litter buckets are just a hair larger than my fishing buckets so they don't get stuck together (theres that d**n BEER)
just enough room behind the buckets for the auger.... I think this just might work.
I know I am not the only person in the offseason to make a sled lets see them.
-
Nothing fancy. Jet Sled SUV. I carry a fold up chair to sit in. Too old to sit on a bucket all day.

Here’s my sled circa 2006… Jet Sled Jr. “pimped out” w/ PVC structure and Petty-blue plywood decks.
Kicking around a revised edition for the 09/10 season… I was trying to get the IS.com mod’s to start a new topic forum dedicated to custom built sleds or sled modifications… there are some really creative dudes on here and plenty of inspiration to draw from when the time comes to build.
-
I like the sled Dizzy, is that a built in beer holder by the cooler?

Ha ha, it could be! ;D
No, it holds my transducer when moving from hole-to-hole... it swings outboard the sled so the water doesn't drain into the sled (there is a 1" drain hole in the bottom of the pipe elbow there).

I got a little inspiration on this site for my sled, thanks Dizzy.

I "built" this ski/Thule roof rack sled a couple years ago. I just shortened the skis so it fits my DX3000 a bit better. Built from FREE curbside skis and a roof rack I inherited, and a bit of angle aluminum. The roof rack pops off the skis by loosening the clamps.

Another project I've been working on over the summer. I built a box to put on top of my JetSled XL out of 1/4" plywood and some 1/2"x1/2" pine framing. My first experience with West Marine epoxy. That was fun. Some black paint, piano hinges. Some aluminum stock
to for door edges. One door opens by itself. When you open the other one, it opens the second as well. My XL has UHMW strips for wear protection on the bottom. And I added an aluminum backer plate to the hitch eye-bolts for reinforcement. I also picked up a heavy duty two hitch for it. The box weighs just a bit more than the sled itself. My only regret is building it ~12" tall on the sides. I think 9" would have been plenty. I still need to add a cord to keep the door from falling all the way back.
Sorry about the flash reflections in one of the pictures.

Yes. I used machine screws and counter-sunk them. They are slightly sunk (i.e. deeper than flush to the plastic).

Thanks man. I'm going to try pimping my jet sled out tomorrow. I've got access to old ski's free wood and pvc and tools. I'm just not all that handy. Wish me luck. I'll be sure to post pics once my old lady finds the darn camera cord. I want to go totally nuts with it but can only do what I'm capable of. Any lil tidbits you can throw my way would be a big help. It will probably be something I'll always be messing with so I'm sure I won't be happy after one day.
-
I couldn't find the camera cord so here are a couple phone pics. I had some fun doing it. I'll probably be messing with it for a while. It needs some paint. I'm thinking black and hot pink.

You would think it would but, being how wide my frame is it doesn't. I'm sure you can tell by looking at it that the seat was kind of an after thought. I got lucky with some of it. The sled rests inside the frame so it's convertable. Ski's for the long haul out, then pop it out to hole hop my spot on the lake.
I had my little brother put everything to the test (375lbs). I was half expecting the sled to cave in in the middle without screwing the sled to the 2x4's. He stood in it and it didn't budge. I didn't think the seat stood a chance in heck. Call me evil but I was almost hoping to see it flip over when he plopped his big rear on the seat. No dice...Better luck next time. Just so you know I was ready with my cam phone when he sat down. I would have shared for sure (Sorry Tank). I'll probably do my Jr sled soon. I'll be sure to have those ski's shifted farther to the front with phone in hand.
The seats came from my canoe. That shelf is just wide enough for me to bungy down both canoe seats for the kiddos. It all worked out pretty slick.

Dude, I don't weigh 375, i'm 335, ya ba$$!ard. I had a couple visions come to me while checkin out all these sleds. We'll have to get crackin on it soon. Ice is almost here

Nice looking sleds guys. As long as you are happy and it suits your needs, it's perfect. My first sled was just a wooden bow with some old wooden skiis on it. It was good enough til I had so much gear that I had to upgrade. I did give it away and it is still in use today. It has made it trhough 4 different people with only minor tough ups. I am looking at my sled to do some upgrades now.
But first I am going fishing today!!! ;D
-
Thsi is what I use early ice. A few mods to it. Wood reinforcement both front and back. Some tie downs to bungie gear on. I like to use a bungie net.

TY... To be honest, there isn't much inside but a bench seat and a cpl pole holders. It is made from 3/16 luan with 3/4 x 3/4 framing. The bottom 8" was coated inside and out with "cheap" spray on bed liner to help waterproof it, then it was all painted with porch /deck paint. I'm sure that added some extra weight, But figured it would help it last a few more years. As I mentioned previously, all the wood was free.. And I "designed" / built most of it at work..on the clock... ;D Boss that it was an awesome design ;D There is plenty of room for me and all of my "stuff". It heats up nicely with a lantern, But if need be I can hook up the heater with the 20# tank outside. And it is much easier to pull and set up then my "suitcase" style shanty ...There is room for improvement (a more comfortable seat for one ), But I'm happy with it..for now...

Thank you jimmy deam for get'n that pic in.
i built it to pull a 3 section 6x12 insulated deck with 9 holes , covers, and sleves.
i set my quick fish 6 on it. moves like a dream.
we use it to pull our tubs, and everything else.
cost around $ 50.00 to make.
mounted skies on my deck last year, and it was like dragging a dead horse!
conduit is the way to go.

I finally got what you were asking for...
From the scales at work, my sled /shanty weighs 120 lbs. Seems like a lot, But I guess every thing adds up...
But as I mentioned before, it pulls very easily, even on snow. I load and unload it from the back of my truck myself. The only pain is having to load and unload all of my stuff when flipping it up or down, thus the reason for having multiple buckets..
As for the measurements... In the sled mode, it is 61" long, 42" wide and 36" tall (Measuing from the ice). The main box sits 7 1/2" off of the ice...
When set up as a shanty... it is 61" tall, 42" wide and 50" deep. The main box is 27" deep and the slide out area (Hole area) is 22" x 42"
Basically it is similiar to a Bananna box with one side cut out of the lid... If that makes any sense.. If you have any questions.. or pics of specific areas , let me know...

Hi All.... ((Orig post on Jan 22, 2010))
I LOVE my Otter 2 mini Ice sled, and for several reasons...
- They way they built it,it is very very strong for it's size. ( very thick bottom)
- It can fit in the back of most closed in vehicles.( well small SUV"S now I guess) ( before the rack it was some cars)
- It is easy to pull. ( before the Rack and now just as easy after the slides put on the bottom )
- AND the most important thing of all is..... I will never ever will carry anything on my Back again...LOL The rack is even more important now since I bought a 24 lb Ice tent this fall... and it lets me haul other people's stuff now even more..( why should they have to carry there things)
I JUST had to make a few changes on it to suit me...
First thing the WIFE SAID when she saw the CAMO DUCT Tape... was .... " Ya know your a Redneck When!....."
All my fishing friends said when I pulled out the back of the Small SUV was... " Oh My Gawd " and Laughed...
I have been thinking of this build all summer.. and really wanted to use PVC. When I saw the Rod holder that " TubDude" built
and posted for us all. I started on the rod rack ... then I could not stop thinking about more.. PVC for the rack. had some thoughts of it all summer. BUT when I saw pics of the older Sled that “Bart” built, when a diff style of PVC that gave the courage to try this one.
Here are some Pics of My Revamped " Otter Two Mini Ice sled" ( Phase one is now complete...LOL)
Take care ... Have fun on the Ice and with all those around you....AltaIce

Got to tell ya... Last night I went to bed very very late (12:10 am), Wife helped me Fall asleep..LOL...LOL
Planned to get up 6:00 am or so or as late as possible) ( being that would be a sleep in on a day off) Was planning on going down to the Hardware store to pick up all the pieces I needed to finish Phase Two of my Sled....
Then woke up wide awake at 2:30 am wide awake..LOL First thing that hit my mind was a new and different idea for a self setting rod holder.....LOL.. So made a pot of coffee and went on down stairs, to work on something...LOL
Anyways.... worked and planned and worked and planned.. LOL until 8:30 , then went down to the hardware store and once again they were all out of the Basic elbows and 90 degrees....*bah*
I had planned to buy a Lot of stuff including pipe etc.but walked out of there a hour later with nothing... Bought the wife breakfast on the way home... Just sitting have a Java , then going to try two other stores later today...
It is nice to work my hands again and have it very relaxing revamping this Otter sled .... :)
I'm actually really pumped about this new rod holder , striking thingy ma jiggy I have in my head....LOL
I pulled apart half of my phase two to build some of the rod holder , striker thing jiggy... (L)
Anyways... thanks again folks... Later .... have a great day and Take Care.

Is that a Fish float? Catch a good one and give it a toss out on the ice? LOL
-
LOL...." joeythejigger " Your right it is a Fish Float,
Your right again... you do throw it out there.. I have added a hair little weight to the inside of it and firmly wrapped one ( and glued tight) end of a Fifty foot nylon rope to it with the other end hooked up to a harness that can be placed around my shoulder and and or waist .
I hope I never have to use it, but if someone does fall through the ice I get a chance at throwing it at there head and knocking them out so they slip into the water in peace... LOL
You should have been looking out my Neighbors windows... the Day I was out in the street giving it a test.. I would imagine it looked kinda stupid... (LOL) ;D No one came out and ask me what I was doing... (L) I can only imagine what they thought.
(( The hook on the right , with the red reflector tape ... Can be twisted off fast and the whole rope comes off with one fast swoop)) ( no unwinding )

Thanks Gyle
I agree with you.. I think the Rope was a great idea.... It was not mine... I first saw the idea in a post that was put on here from " Bob D " I think you can see it here.. Re: Let's see your ice fishing sleds!
(http://Re: Let's see your ice fishing sleds!)
I hope that works and if not I'll try and post his pics for you.

:) Hi " jimmyclaude " Sir , no need to say that my Friend....( Handshake )
It is neat when I read all the post on all these sites and see all the pics we all share amongst us all.. I learn so much and am very impressed with the folks in here.. we all love what we do as a past time and enjoy it all.
I see all kinds of pics in here and with every pic of a sled I see what someone has built to suit them or to there liking..
You have to understand that I built my sled that way it is .... because .... I Can't use those little tri-pod chairs... LOL.. legs don't work like that for me.... LOL.. and I can't kneel down like I used to..
SO hence the rack for the Hard chairs.. I did last year and got tired of strapping everything in a pile.LOL.
So I think what ever your Jet looks like or how it works I bet it is OK and Fine... Don't forget it DOES not matter how our gear gets there or on what.... AS LONG AS IT GETS THERE..
Take care and enjoy those tight Lines Sir..

Yes Alta I agree... A chair with a back is in order. I will have to post up my sled.
It is a little different as I have taken a Jet sled and made it into a kick sled. Not as nice as yours but it fills the bill.
Nice job!
-
Hey Altaice!
WHAT A RIG MAN! Some of the places I fish I would be affraid to take it down the hill! WOW! Awesome job! ;D
-
Yes jimmyclaud .
I would like to see your Jet sled.. I read in a post that you said once that you used it so much you wore a hole in the corner of it. Did you ever get it patched with something and if you did what did you use?
Ya I have to have a chair with the back it just helps.. and is more firm to sit on.
Hey Sir it does not have to be as nice as anyone's.. as long as it works and works well for you.. That is all that matters in my mind..
Mine was also a project that gave me something other to do than just watch T.V. or sit around... It was great to work with my hands again.... been a long time...LOL
Sorry jimmyclaud I do not Know what a " Kick Sled" is.
8)
-
LOL... Yes your right Greg2ha... it will bite going down hill.. BUT i don't know what would be the worst of the two evils ... going down hill then fish the day away or TRY to get the son of a gun UP THE HILL...
Last year I did that I had to haul it up a hill LOL..LOL.. now that was a chore...
When I decided to make the sled this way with the rack... I made the decision then that I was making a " motor home" and Not a " 4x4"..(LOL)
I have to design a handle for it still and that will make it easier to handle when pulling.. now with the rope it tends to slide so nice it race past me...
8)
-
It developed into a kick sled because the best way to repair the holes was to mount it on down-hill skis. I picked these up from a Summer garage sale for free.
I put counter sunk machine screws through the bottom of the skis through 2" blocks and then the Jet sled. The skis extend out the back which I can stand on when going down hill or kick across the ice.
Here is a link to you tube of a kicksled

WoW !! jimmyclaude
Is that ever a neat idea.. I would have never thought of that... Really!! I didn't know that they even existed. What a cool way to travel across the ICE.. Never have seen them or even knew it was a world class type of Sport. Looked at a competition on on youtube from Finland.. ;D and thanks for the ULR you put up there... :)
As I thought of how you described your sled and after watching the videos on them... LOL ALL I could think about was how one could extend the Back as you said and be able to make a up front steering system that was safe and was able to be kept under control.... (LOL) Yup think of the strangest things....(LOL)
Yes I thought about , down the road looking for old used skies.. as I might to put on some sort of side runners on my sled for more balance... not sure though... more test runs disci-zed as ice fishing trips must be in my future...(LOL)
Later .

Awesome job to everyone .Now I just need the time to incorporate ideas I have picked up to trick my own.
-
I built a simple box,1/2"ply,sides bottom,1/4"ply toplid, pulled one end in 4"from end, rounded off bottom corner with coffee can, screwed alum flashing along bottom around coffee can corner up the side-end 1/2way.put wood blocks inside for additional screwing.also put in 1x3 brace in top center to support lid. this box was temp, quickie for one weekend. That was 1968! I just changed the alum, flashing in 08 only got 40 yrs out of it. used galv.pipe this time should get 80 yrs out of this one!.sometimes simple is best.when I learn how to post pics I wll.

Hey JimmyC,
That sounds like a very interesting idea.. it would make it easier to get at things.. and it could keep things separate if you needed to.
I hope you still keep it a Kick sled.. that sounds like the coolest thing ever man.

Hi WinaukeeBoys Happy New Year.
You say simple, but it is still very very effective. I like how you used the flat space on the under side of he lid.
If it works and works well for you.. it is not simple, it is a build well completed.

Hi GuinnessGuy
Neat idea and set up. Ever heard of a place called Cabela's... LOL ... just kidding.
Question = Why is one side open and the other side Crisscross? Is is it for support?
I like the way you have your Skies, it is something I really have to look at closer. My sled pulls really nice on hard snow, ice and even on bare pavement .... But it does not pull worth a dang on the little deeper or deeper snow, at all.
Thanks for showing us your sled. I bet it pulls really nice.
Have a happy and great New Year.

I like it Fork!!! Have you ever gone to the store with that, it would sure give the blue hairs a scare eh!
-
Mad,
We do drive it on the road here. They do allow them, but the island of Put-in-Bay is only about 5 miles long, and there are very few people in the winter months. The cart lifts on and off easily after removing 2 bolts. We just put new lights on it because the light on the quad shines thru the cart and it is tough to see where you are going. Here is a pic of my son & his quad infront of a house built out of an old ore freighter, once owned by Henry Ford. I took the other other pic from my plane last tuesday. You can see the island is pretty small.

Someone asked if that was a solar panel on top of my sled. It is in fact a solar panel that keeps my battery which is located under the finder charged all season. The transducer is on the end of that swing arm sticking up off the back. I turn it down to the surface of the water. This sled was made 20 years ago and has worked perfectly.

Hi "Mcduff1313"
Very nice set up. I like how small you were able to keep it and still have it working for you. (Including the carrying of your tent)
If a person looks at it real fast and not paying attention , I think there first thought might be that it may have a major tip over factor..... but .... but if one looks a little longer ( into the snow) you have figured that one out and extended the left pipe ski (wider wheel balance sort of speak) to counter act the weight and balance of the unit with the tent on the side of it..
How does it pull in the deeper snow?
Question: Mr. Mcduff1313, Seeing that it has been this size for over 20 years. May I ask what you haul it in, to and from the Ice? And... And ... how did you keep yourself from getting " Two Foot ides" ( Know what I mean Vern?) That feeling always having or wanting to ADD MORE!! ... LOL ...
Have you ever given it a thought to add or change the tow rope to a solid tow handle?
I am impressed, a very clean unit indeed. Thank you for sharing your Pictures. (Handshake) Well done sir.

Thanks for the nice comments AltaIce. The skis are 1/2 conduit. They are actually the same length the left one just appears longer in the pic. The sled is very stable and pulls very easily even though it is heavy. Only about a 1/4 of the conduit meets the ground or ice. You have to hold it back going down hill or it will take off on you, if the bottom of a hill is clear I let it go. I haul a single burner stove, coffee pot, stereo IPOD dock, 7" color TV, Mess kits, and complete tackle selection and gear and ice auger. I don't always take everything it just depends on how long I will be out. The tow rope is perfect because you can toss it up on the sled. The shanty is 20 years old as well, its a two man and does the job.

My sled at the moment:
I picked it up at fleetfarm on sale accouple seasons ago, and have used it a few times to haul the auger and heater as is. The Denali has it's own sled and hauls the rest of the stuff in the bottom of it. That being said, I've gotten some pretty good ideas and inspirations from this thread to make a nice rack that will organize the "stuff" better than just tossing it in. Hoping to get started on it this weekend with my son...after we attend the icefishing show!

i do not see any sleds with gas augers... my issue is I have an otter sled that I pull by hand... it fits in my small car nicely but the auger does not fit with everything else
-
some nice sleds! That is one thing I will be purchasing this week
-

Yes, they work great! We do a fair amount of fishing at night so I have bells land Frabill lights on them. We get pretty focused on the flashers, it's nice to know when the flag pops... Problem is, I hear them in my sleep now ;D

Finally got my sled finished last weekend, but don't have enough snow yet to drag it the 100 yds down to the ice

Not too shabby Wheez.
I think we used the same skis. LOL I gotta get a hand auger to mount to mine, I like your holster for yours.

Thank You,
All of my inspiration came from this thread. trying to decide if i want to put a push handle on it.

Great thread! Some sweet designs on here.

A kick sled inspired by Jimmyclaude. Right now I just bungee cord the auger to the top. Eventually I'll get a rack made and put a 3-sided windbreak on it.

Yeah they are zip tied to the half bucket Frabill thingy-bob in front, and that is bolted to the main box. The one single rod holder in back is zip tied right into the main box.

I have both gas and hand auger. They both fit in the kick sled, but I usually stick with the hand to keep weight down and more room for other gear.

Yeah thats a sweet idea! I might have to do the same but add a little more ground clearance for these snowy northern ny lakes.
-
Side brackets would work.... auger on one side - shelter on the other for weight balance.

I like the chains and the lights. Where did you get thyem? How much?
-
Chains I got for about 70 X 2 for 140.00 Automatic Distributors
Lights I got from Yamaha dealer when I bought the ATV. My wife has a Polaris XP550 with the brightest lamps I've seen on a stock vehicle. Much better than my Grizzly with the PIAA's

I need to know how to attach the skis to the spacers before attaching it to the box?
-
Drill all the way thru the ski and countersink the screws from the bottom of the ski.

Decided to put a push handle on and make a kick sled.

lets see if i can do this (http://i1128.photobucket.com/albums/m482/Drill4Gills/icefishing001.jpg)(http://i1128.photobucket.com/albums/m482/Drill4Gills/icefishing007.jpg)
this sled was built by my brother that no longer fishes but had to much time on his hands and to much emt conduit . i will post the mods i made later ,all i added was a set of skiis so it rides higher in loose snow its all emt bent and welded together , my shappell set down over the frame so it won't slide off with a stop in the back and front to keep it in place . can't beat it . and i would almost be willing to bet you could pull it at a 100 mph down the lake behind a sled it's that tough

Skidly, You sure that's not the"C-5" of sleds? And do you need a loadmaster?

I am intrigued by your auger. Looks like an electic drill attached to a Mora bit.
Do you carry a generator? deep cycle batteries and an inverter? How does it
work?

What do you power that with on the ice??
sometimes a 1000 watt Harbor freight generator and sometimes a 3500 watt Onan

Works Great! much easier pushing than pulling.

I feel like I should have theme music kicking across the ice. (low rider from the movie Up In Smoke) I know it looks different than what any one usually sees.
I was doing a brisk 8mph with 150 lbs of gear and my fat carcuss too, this week end with very little effort.

Yea! I thought about cutting some holes for speakers into my sled box, but just couldn't do it. the headphones seem to work fine and much lighter and smaller than a deep cycle battery.

Hey Scott how does the first sled with the raised red skis pull in deep snow or slush?
-
Few more weeks and it will be time to reinvent the reinvention.... The days are long but the years are short.....
-
hey goatskin, the one w/red skis isn't mine, but that is the exact reason he raised it like that! too bad we haven't got enough snow this year to test it!
-
Here is a couple pics of my sled.. It isnt 100% finished yet but as it sits it will pull everything that we need for a day on the ice.. I will have to get some pics of it when it is all loaded up,We pull it behind the snowmobile so and it does great.. Matter of fact i am a big guy and i rode in it for 12 miles round trip to get to the lake last weekend...
And the best part of it all is it was 100% free for me to build and i had it done in less then 2 hours..

My otter Medium sled was too big and bulky for early and late season run an gun. I picked up a Glide lite sled on sale and got started on some mods.
Used an old turkey hunting ground pad, the hard bucket lid just doesn't cut it !

I, for one resemble that remark. ;)
I'm really surprised no one has posted their sleds in the last two years. :o
Anywho, after reading thru all of these posts, I'm bringing it back to the top, as its just that important for those of us who are just starting to consider building our first sled.

Here is the Smitty Sled I just built, my first stab at a Smitty (THANKS SMITTY!!!)
Skis are 5' long, uprights are 9" tall, wide of cross members are 4' and skis are positioned 3' apart. I reinforced the 1x6 cross members with 1" square aluminum tubing in order to keep it very light.

My first go at the Smitty sled. It is 8" off the deck of the skis. Very easy pull with 4 guys gear on it with a 3 man hub shelter. Total cost was $19.

Built 3 years ago. Probably have made 6 over the years. Aluminum round, 6' long. Bent to slide down along sled, holes drilled in handle to hold rods that have cup hooks screwed in end of rods to hold rods when away from box. Handle pulls up to pull sled, keeps from tipping over. Works quite well.
