Lake Lenore & St.Brieux 2013-2014
« on: Nov 20, 2013, 12:40 PM »
Just thought I would get a page started for this area and see if anyone has ventured out on the ice yet and if its safe to walk out?? I have been chasing deer lately but I am thinking of walking out on the small lake with my auger and rod and check some depths of ice tomorrow after my morning cruise. If anyone has been out let me know, or else I will check tomorrow and post what I find out!

Hi.  I'm new to the forum.  Though I've lived here all my life I've never ice fished in Saskatchewan.  However, our son-in-law will be with us for a week over Christmas.  He is an avid outdoorsman and fisherman of every kind.  He'll go squirrely over the week and I figured ice fishing will be right up his alley.  We will be going to St. Brieux/Lake Lenore from Osler a couple of times over Christmas so I joined this forum hoping to gain some knowledge of the area.  I have no idea of where we can get on the ice, where we can try that will have a reasonable chance of catching anything, etc.  Things of that nature.  Also hope to keep updated as to the thickness of the ice.  (Though if the temps of today keep up that shouldn't be a problem.)  So I'm hoping folks post often.  When I have specific questions I hope you don't mind if I ask them.  Thanks.

Yes you can walk out on small lake, people were fishing on it a week ago. Don't know how thick but I know a neighboring slough holds my quad and deer on a sled just fine.

Saskoutdoorsman.  Thanks very much for your message.  I tried to reply but I don't have my requisite 3 posts yet so I can't message or reply yet.  Going to rectify that today.  I appreciate your offer to meet up with us over the Christmas season and we'd surely like to take you up on that.  Will be in touch later.
Glen

Went out at Lungs on Saturday with my kids and a couple friends. We caught 10 walleye, 6 pike and 1 perch. It was decent up till lunch then died off. There was a solid 6-7" of ice. Was nice to wet the line.

Seems about right, every three years or so, someone dunks a truck in St Brieux or lake Lenore, foolishness!

How thick should the ice be to safely drive on it with a vehicle?

12" minimum is pretty standard, the problem this year is places where snow has accumilated the ice will be thinner, could be a dangerous December.

We were out on Sunday and tried Lungs first with little success.  Moved on after about 2 hours and saw much more action on the east side of St Brieux.  10 walleye and one decent sized jack.  Took a few home with us in the 2-3lb range.

What was the ice like on the east side, is it 12 inches yet, are sleds going on the ice?

Ice was only about 6" and pretty iffy where the snow had accumulated.  We did see a guy on a quad out there but no sleds.

Ice was checked for the annual net fishing, ice ranged anywhere from 7" where there was snow to 12" where there wasn't on big lake east side. This was done on Sunday morning with skidoo and sled. Many people driving on small lake already though I don't recommend it yet. Net fishing will be 13-15th.

Thursday ice on little lake was 12" in places, others where snow piled up it was down to 8. This afternoon I was out on st briuex south, no one has drove out yet and I wasn't going to be the first...so I walked out from west side. When I arrived on the south end the ice was 10". No perch on my perch hole which is a cause for concern, might be too early.

I heard there were some vehicles on the ice yesterday.  How do they choose the location for the nets?  Are they popular whitefish spawning grounds?

Net fishing is always in the same place on east side of lake. Theres only one reason why they are there...

I'm not going to tell you what you should do, but 4-5" is lots of ice for a skidoo and people have been driving on in places for more than 2 weeks, 10-12" is lots for any truck out there IMO.

I have been out on Lenore for the past couple weeks using sled.Have not been out for the past number of days Has been 8-12 inches in different locations, some ice not great 3-4 inches clear ice 6-8 of white ice on top from the early snows during freeze up in a few areas.. Been so cold I bet the good ice is alot thicker now. Have not fished St. Brieux. Would not drive my pickup on quite but soon but that's me. Fish safe

I agree, I drive on anything with 10 plus inches of black ice. I drove my diesel on 9-11 inches on the strap years ago lots of cracking was a little nervous. and almost turned around. When i got to the place where we usually fish near shields there were two diesels parked side by side  :o. scary.

There are very few natural springs on either lake, with the ice we had two weeks ago and the cold weather since I'd be more than comfortable driving a half ton on the ice now.

In an unrelated note...the walleye are tasting better now, those who fished this fall will know what I mean. Empty stomachs though.

While out net fishing, the ice is 18-22" thick on the big lake. Obviously it's good to go.

How are you doing netting nicemustang?
Is the catch good this year?

Are there also burbot & tullibee's / ciscos  in LL and St.Brieux?

:) Fished St Brieux today and it was the best Walleye fishing we have had on the ice in years. Non Stop action all day. Only 10 perch between the two of us but most were jumbos a few over 14 inches. I was using a pk flutterfish gold and a white red dot glow pk spoon. Started with meal worms and quickly switched to perch eyes. We also caught half a dozen pike between us . released all but a few eyes and the perch. We measured the ice at 14 inches on the nose.
