sick of breaking tips off
« on: Feb 08, 2011, 11:28 AM »
i have been using a 5 gal bucket to tote my poles around for many years of ice fishing without too many probs.  but last night i slammed a tip in the door of the truck (favorite pole too of course) >:(

does anybody have any homemade ideas/pictures on a rod locker , i have plenty of plywood laying around that i dont really need to buy much to make it .
-Truckin , Huntin , and Fishin , That's how I roll

Ha Haa Haaa  Did that hurt right away ???

I know the feeling and also broke many a rod tips carrying them in buckets etc. Not to mention they get tangled all up etc. I smelt fish alot as well and typically bring 5-6 rods and got tired of them being tangled up.

So I came up with this idea. Went down to the local craft store and bought about 2 yards of heavy duty brown canvas or denim type material. I then had the wife sow 6 pockets across the bottom about 8" apart & 6" deep. Sowed up all sides of the pocket except the top of course.

I also added a strap on each opposite end. Slip the rods in the pockets, roll it up and tie it off using the straps. Keeps them separated, protected easy to carry...

Works for me and was pretty cheap to create....

I took my arrow case glued  styrofoam to both sides. The spinning reels I have to loosen the reel handles. But i am switching over to fly reels Just love the fact I can feel the fish breath on the jig or so it seems.

I went to a local sporting goods store and bought some golf club tubes. These tubes cover the club shaft and are cheap. I cut them to size and slide them over the rod. I attached a minibungee at the reel end, so they can't fall off. They protect the rod and keep lures from tangling.

A $20.00 Plano take down shotgun case works very well. It will take a 35" rod. I've tried a lot of different soft cases and not one worked as well as these.

I had the same problem, broken tips, tangled rigs,so I tried a plastic double gun case I had laying around.6 rods and misc gear fit no problem.I had it in the hut today for the first time.It fits behind me nice in my 2 man otter ,and is almost like a workbench when it's open.I'll try to get some pic's next time out.The gun case gets my vote! ;D

+1 on gun case makes park ranger nervous but I like the chaos it causes. They are on to me now though.

Another thing that works good is the black styrofoam for waterpipes.  You can buy it at home depot or lowes for around $2 for an 8 foot section.  Enough to do at least three rods.

I had a bunch of those big plastic candy cane christmas decorations...the 3 ft long ones, that you put on an outside tree or a fence..etc.
Anyway, if you cut out the curved part, the shaft works great for ice blue rods. I store the rods in a soft bag and they stay fine.
