depends what your fishing for.  if i'm fishing for big fish, or in deeper water, or using big jigs and lures; i snap it from waist level to above my head.  My buddies have said i look funny when i do it, but the funny thing is, is that i usually land more fish than them (now i notice them setting the hook harder).  when i fish for small fish with small jigs though, just a goog quick snap of the wrist.  Oh yeah, you got to keep tension at the top, or its easy to loose them.

For perch and other smaller fish, if im using my ultra light ill jus lift with good pressure and i never seem to lose them, but if im using bigger bait or fishing for bigger fish ill set it hard.

i generally use the same force with all my hook sets, regardless of species. i like to use ultra sensitive rods, and i snap it about 1 foot and reel at the same time. what i do notice with some novice anglers (we must fish barbless here in manitoba) is that they allow some slack after doing a good hook set..that allows the fish to spit the hook.  grumpy

For panfish usually just a quick, short jerk sets the hook. For trout, walleyes, and pike you have to set the hook harder but still fast.  But don't try to set too hard, that will slow you down. If you think you have gotten a bad set, you could always set the hook again.

Here's my tip - When you have a bite, drop your rod tip and watch the line.  If the fish has the bait the line will "pile up" on the water instead of being pulled down by the weight of the jig.  As you're watching the line, get your free hand on the reel handle.  It sounds like it would take a lot of time, but with a little practice it only takes a second or two.  Dropping the tip makes sure that the fish doesn't feel any resistance from above, and getting your hand on the reel makes sure you can start reeling and hold tension as soon as you set the hook.  As far as the actual set, I always set hard.  Unless you're fishing crappies, you can't do any harm by making sure the hook is driven home good.

for panfish, short and qucik wrist lift/snap. For lakers a hook set from about your waist to nearly your nose, but it must be fast and hard.
if anybody from michigan will help me out with the lakes and stuff up here I'd really appreciate it since I'm new to the area.

Rip their lips off.

Depends on the species.

Crappie=gentle hookset.

bluegill=little bit heavier

walleye and pike=bit more

lake trout=as much as you can give her

Lakers...as hard as I can...sometimes I jig them in 160' of water, need every bit of hooksetting power as possible.

...one thing for sure, them hooksets where you ''get'em late'', if they reach the hole...count it as a quick release ;D.

i would definately say it depends on species, i dont usually fish for panfish but would just tug it and keep it tight. same goes for trout except lakers. lakers and bass and pike i do like jake said ill start at my waist and snap rod upward to my head and keep it there .this allows me too feel the fish and keep the line tight yet give him a little love if he needs it.

For perch- if the buggers don't come out of the hole on the hookset, it is not hard enough!

Just kiddin.

For small fish I just give it a little jerk and start reeling.
For bigger fish like lakers, I give it all I got!

I'm a panfisherman - pinch the barb down on all baits, quick short wrist pop, keep some tension on the line and they aren't going anywhere but up the hole.
