  • Why can't it go from warm to instant fishable ice?

As far as Cocalala is concerned, Sunday it had 6"of beautiful clear ice. The heater in the hut melted all the snow off and you could see right through it. That part of the country is noticeably colder at night than in CdA or Spokane. It froze hard in the Spokane Valley last night. And this is the report for Sagle.

I second this, but for any lakes around here too. I want to go Friday evening and hoping the ice is still good anywhere in north Idaho.

Was out on Cocollala today.  6-7 inches of clear ice, no snow or slop.  Nice hard dry ice on our way out this morning, however by 11 the top of the ice was a little wet.  Ice was making a lot of noise today because of the sun.  I'm sure there's a solid week left on the lake before you'll need a plank or start to question the ice, but always be mindful and be careful.  Marked zero fish and caught zero in the 2 hours we were there, was a beautiful T-shirt day though.  This was my last go for the season, as short and sweet as it was, now I'm shifting focus to shed hunting and prepping bear bait.  I'll see you all next year.

Ok guys,  anyone  ever catch any channel cats through the ice? Hauser, Cocalala, Jewel or anywhere else they are found.
Cocolallah has lots of catfish.  I use tip-up with a perch slab.  I have caught lots of little ones on Hauser using a small spoon with a small stinger treble hook and a narrow 2- or 3-inch piece of perch meat.  They try to chew off the perch meat and get hooked on the treble.  Have caught two at once doing this and they were about a foot long each.  Did not even trip the flag.

8 to 20 ft near the inlet streams on Hauser.  and south of beach along the cabin side of Hauser as far as I could lob a baited rig from the shore.  did not ice cats at hauser.  Have caught a few on east end of Fernan in winter.  Cats in all the lakes I guess.

Thanks,

Got thanksgiving week off, thinkin I might load up the buggy see if I can get into any alpine lakes that might have enough ice. My first thought was maybe porcupine, but I fished it this summer with no success or sign.  Would be sweet to get on the ice before December.       ;D

Sure would be nice if cocollalla freezes.  It was pretty fun last year.

FYI.  Anyone not a strikemaster laser auger after August 2021.  There is recall on blades being defective.

Eight inch (8") Laser blades only.  Here is a copy of the recall notice.  You can right click the image and then select open in new tab.  Then left click on the image in the new tab to expand it for easy reading.   ;D

Wondering if there are any lakes in N. Idaho that are ready. Anyone have any intel?
I'll probably do some scouting tomorrow and will post an update.

Rule of thumb in north Idaho is if your ice fishing by Christmas, its a good year.  Cross your  fingers.

Fernan had a very thin skim of ice around the shore and docks this morning. This was at the west boat launch. Not even close yet.

Round is about 75% percent capped. Cocolalla had some ice on the far north end but a slight breeze and that’s toast.
