Ancient Chinese secret
Ive been skimming around on here and a few of you guys keep reffering to the "rubber band method", What exactly is the rubber band method? I dont think ive ever herd of it.
Alot of Mainers use em' when fish are picky, and run 10' then drop the bait. I've never used it, but its something like attaching the band onto you line 2-3' up for where you place your bait, then putting the band around your spool. then winding up the 2-3', and when the fish runs with the bait, it sets the hook. Don't 100% quote me on this, but I think they use circle hooks with this method.
Here is a copy of my post from the Salmon Board :Some people use a slammer or Automatic fisherman, when fishing salmon/trout. They are nice, but you can use regular tip ups also.If you want to use the tip ups that you already have, here is what I would do :Let's say you want to fish fifteen feet down. Pull out 20 feet of line, and tie on a rubberband with a couple of half hitches. Open the rubberband and pull it over the spool of your tip up. Now wrap 5 feet of line back on the spool, over the rubberband. When the fish takes it, the line comes off the spool like normal for 5 feet, then the rubberband sets the hook. The salmon will then pull against the rubberband and break it. It will then pull out line like normal, but won't be able to spit the bait because the hooks have been set.Hope this helps,Wiener
I don't use circle hooks.Only treble hooks, when I rig my tip ups.Wiener
In our 10,000 laws state...the rubber band as a spring or mechanical hooking device is not legal. The only rubber band method on the tip up is to have the rubber band on the spool but not tied to the line to create a hook set. For the tip down you just pin a little line under the rubber band on the rod.
