tungsten jigs
« on: Sep 20, 2012, 03:04 PM »
Im in the market for QUALITY tungsten jigs. I've read that Russian or wolfram is the highest grade? I've looked at bentley and they seem to be pretty nice but is there anything better?  Even if I have to order them from Russia. Money isn't the issue but if I got more for my $ I wouldn't complain :icefish:

I bought some of the Fiskas at Gander Mountain last winter, but never got to use them. The quality is top notch but they are pricey.

The bentleys and the fiskas are both as top notch as they come. Not sure how much "better" you are wanting. :-\ The key on both of them is the hooks. I believe the fiskas use gamakatsu hooks which are the best hooks out there. I have some bentleys also and the hooks are same quality as the fiskas hooks, but not sure if they are gamakatsu or not on the bentleys. I just got the bentleys because I like the idea of the reflective crystals.

Bentleys have the same hooks. I knew both are great jigs and I was most likely going to buy plenty of both just didn't know about many other options out there and if they were of any quality

I guess as far as the wolfram tungsten jigs, Ive only seen the fiskas in stores. And the bentleys I heard about from this site and then looked them up online. Not a whole lot of different brands out there in tungsten ice jigs yet, but I imagine that will gradually change over the next few years with the tungsten craze nowadays.

Have used both the fiskas and the bentleys.  That said I think in the last couple yrs the quality has went down hill on the fiskas as I have broken a few hooks off when hooked in the roof of the mouth.  Have never broken a bentley to date, I still use both.  Just my opinion for what its worth!

Hard to beat thungsten/wolfram jigs. Almost only ones i use when jigging for panfish, even caught few pickerel.
Had a few broken/bent hooks on them though.

You can fish deeper with lighter line and get it down there quicker with Tungsten as compared to lead or solder jigs. Not a gimmick, just effective. When in doubt, bites tough, then go small, Tungstens the answer

The whole use of tungsten started when the U.S. ice team was over seas in russia fishing a tournament....The U.S. only had lead tear drops with them and got schooled by the russians as they already perfected the tungsten jig. The following year the U.S. boys brought some new tungsten with them and one the tournament!  ;D  that will teach em! I have alot of Fiskas and yes have had a couple hooks break....but thats why I bye a handful of them in the beginning of the season! I have yet to see these Bentleys!
if it is to be its up to me!

I have the fiskas in a couple different sizes from 3 - 5, I also picked up some of the " Russian jigs" in the hole through design that use a size 20 or 22 hook from poland this past spring i wanna try. Not sure if my 2lb line is gonna go through the hole though, if ya hold them in your hand and blow on them ya can loose them quick there so small. so far the painted or epoxy ones have been ok but I mostly use the gold with the glow bead on it from fiskas, been consistant for me.

#16 and smaller tungsten do very well with a high quality, 1# or 1.5# flouro line. Do it all the time when the bite gets really tough, minimal problems except seeing them, I'm OLD  :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: :icefish: Loop knots are great with the small stuff

Bentley and Fiskas do NOT use the same hook's...... Bentley does use Gamakatsu hook's....Fiskas ????? not sure. I use both and have more success on the Fiskas, but its probably because I have more of a selection/variety. I also break more of their hook's and lose the paint on them.....Fish on!

I've used Fiskas for years. Very sharp, fine wire hooks. Just be gentle extracting them from the fish's mouth. The finer wire sets easily and doesn't damage delicate baits like mousies.

I like them!

I got a few Fiskas and Sportsman's Direct Jigs in the mail last night.  I see that the Fiskas are coming in 7mm this year.  I might pick up a few to try out.  Here in NH we can't use lead jigs that are less than an inch long.  That means it's either Tungsten or the "lead free" stuff from China.  Both the Fiskas and Sportsmans Direct jigs are good quality.
