Knots for small jigs and light line??
« on: Dec 24, 2010, 06:11 AM »
??? Hi, guys- new guy here. I went perch icefishing Monday and Thursday in my new Clam Yukon with my new order from JamminJigs and proceded to lose 4 new jigs to bad knots. I use the improved clinch knot, but find that, with 1 and 2 lb line, the knot tends to pull through, leaving me with just a little "scriggle" of line at the end. Can anyone suggest any different knots to help prevent me from feeding the perch my new jigs?? Thanks for any and all replies.  ???

I agree with the knots already suggested.

I would also suggest a little superglue to help "weld" everything together.

You could also tie on some of these quick snaps(Sometimes called fast snaps), that way you can change lures without having to re-tie all the time.

Here's a pic of what I'm talking about :

You should be able to find them at your local Fleet Farm, or Gander Mountain.
Most Bait shops should have them also.

Hope this helps,

I usually just use the Trilene knot with 1 & 2lb line.

Both the Trilene and the Palomar will give you doubled line, so that should eliminate your problem. I use a Palomar for 99% of my fishing knots. I also agree with a drop of super glue, that's what I use when I tie a Palomar using braid on my 1/2 oz bass jigs.

Palomar but if you use the clinch knot you could put a square knot on the tail end then pull tight against the wraps and the knot just slip as far as the square. If the jig eye is small first put the line thru then square knot it, 3-4 wraps is enough since it slips hard against the knot. Good knot to use when the line won't go thru the eye twice.

For jigs, I like a Duncan Loop, as it allows for more free motion by the jig. Most knots are tied tight to the eye of the lure/hook and this keeps it in a straight line and doesn't allow for any free motion.

I agree,  I use the Palomar knot for everything from 30lb Salmon knots to 2lb perch knots.  Works well with kevlar line(spider wire, etc.) too.

The clinch knot should work fine, just make sure you twist it at least 5 times.

I'd like to know how you guys manage to get a doubled line thru the hole on one of the tiny jigs we use !!  I can barely get 3# or 4# line thru ONCE on some of these jigs!

Don't get me wrong....I love the Palomar knot and use it when I can, but most of the time it's impossible!!   In those cases, I use the Fisherman's Knot (Clinch).

No doubt! I use the palomer knot on my spider wire on the long poles but I use all mono on the hardwater and I've tried and failed many times trying to get the line back through the eye. Trilene knot.

I've tied the clinch knot for so long now, 30+ years, I can do it with frozen and stiff fingers LOL! The palomar knot looks so simple but always gives me fits and seems like I need to have quite a length of line to tie it, plus it feels awkward when I tie it. Clinch knot seems to always hold nicely for me.

ditto on the lil clips and a palomar knot. walmart has a lil needle threading wire that works great by pushing it through the jig eye and pulling your double line back thru so you can continue your palomar knot. any sewing section has these lil jewels!!!

Improved clinch on everything from 1 pound to 100,mono or braid, never failed me yet unless I didnt get all the paint cleaned from the eyelet. Good quality line is also a must.

I make bowstrings and use a lot of different knots.I don't use these not for this but Here are two knots that work real well for me and you don't need to use superglue The Palomar knot and the reverse clinch knot. Both are excellent.Learn to tie these knots and you will never have trouble with knots. Also replace your line often or at least cut 3 or 4 feet off when you re tie and yes retie once in a while ,it works.    Jerry

Also, one thing that most people forget to mention (fishing show hosts, me from previous post) is to wet your line before you cinch the knot down. The friction created from cinching a knot with mono and especially fluorocarbon really weakens any knot.

Clinch and make sure you spit on it to lubricate it before you tighten it. Otherwise you can weaken the line with the friction for tightening it.

 ???

Don't you have to go through the eye twice with the Trilene Knot?

I hate tying knots on the ice, not only did my eyes go to hell when I turned 50 but my fingers don't work worth a damn either, so I came up with this, it works just as well for my tip ups also. I tie a small ball bearing swivel on my main line with a palomar knot then tie my small jigs on a 2 lb test leader with a palomar knot I make the leader about a foot to a foot and a half long then tie a Surgeons loop on the other end opposite the jig, then to attach the leader to the main line I don't have to tie a knot at all, I just thread the surgeons loop through the ball bearing swivel and drop the jig through the surgeons loop and cinch it up, it is as easy as it gets. here is a link to the surgeons loop very easy to tie. Then I individually coil up the jig and leader and put it in a regular pleated sandwich bag one per bag and I can put several of them in a old plastic peanut butter jar they never get tangled up that way. here is a couple links to the surgeons loop http://www.animatedknots.com/surgeonsloop/index.php?Categ=fishing&LogoImage=LogoGrog.jpg&Website=www.animatedknots.com
