Gulp & Tip-ups
«

Does, or has anyone tried using Gulp Alive minnows for there tip-ups? Sometimes it is difficult for me to get minnows in NJ, our season can vary wildly from no ice to ice for a couple of months. Therefore alot of local bait shops don't carry minnows during the winter. I use Gulp exclusively in the salt water very successfully, but have not had much luck using it for my tip-ups. Any tips would be helpful. Thank you in advance

When I put a minnow on I make sure it is alive, I don't think the gulp minnows have enough scent to make up for the lack of movement. I have used gulp with success as well, but never on a tip up. (never tried it though)

I once tried the smelt ones after they outlawed the salted smelt I was getting from the baitshop, but never caught anything.

We've used Gulp with limited success on tipups, not near as good as a live minnow though. In this region of Montana we can't use live minnows at all, so it's dead minnows or something else. The trout seem to take the Gulp minnows OK, but for walleye or perch a dead minnow is better than Gulp, from what we've experienced anyway.

If you are having trouble getting live minnows during the hard water season I would suggest you keep your dead ones from the soft water season and freeze them to save for the winter. Dead shiners do work on tip ups.....I've caught many Pike / Bass / Pickerel on dead shiners. I have never tried the gulp minnows on a tip up but can say that dead shiners work.....I use a knife and open them up a little before putting them on the hook.....lets the scent out I think!

I like to use live bait for tipups.
If I'm going to use deadbait, then I try to use an oily baitfish.
I think gulp would be best on a jigging rod, not a tipup.

Eat the hot dog and use live bait , if you can't buy live bait catch your own, I'm sure theres a creek near you.

Never used gulp on tip-ups, but had some luck using packaged cisco minnows when wal-mart carried them. Put them on the bottom and the pike will find them.

I bought a jar of the 1" smelt minnow gulp and had very little success. the fish will come in fast and check it out but will not take it, maybe there's to much scent on them who knows. I did manage to catch a few crappies on them every now and then but its something I wouldn't buy again over live minnows.

dead bait and still bait work on windless tipups they jig everytime the wind blows and they are adjustable so no matter how light or heavy the bait is or the wind you will get some movement they work with dead 12" bait for big pike and with a small hook with grubs for perch .
