sled runner ideas???
« on: Dec 28, 2010, 11:21 PM »
What can you use to protect the bottom of your sled???  the local store here in Omaha is out of the runners I need for my sled.  I am pretty handy, and have a full metal shop if need be.  I was hoping that there is something I can buy at the local hardware store.

Have you got a local indoor hockey or ice rink?  Get some of the used protective lower edging called "puck board"  same stuff they use for hut runners, also called UHMW plastic, cuts with a table saw.

This was needed after a few trips out over the pack ice.   All my sleds have runners and they really help.

Polymer from the Frinks snow plow factory that closed a few years back.  I found a bunch at a garage sale in Clayton.  Its pretty much the same as the puckboard Fisherman 1 is talking about .

this is what I made mine out of. enough for two sleds and SS hardware was about 50bucks. cuts and works with simple wood working tools and bends easy with a heat gun. Got mine at a plastics supply shop but you may be able to fine some at a wood working place as they use it for table saw fences and inserts too.

This is the stuff that they make the runners on the iditorad sled dog sleds with. I have actually had my sled pass me on clear ice while pulling it, LOL. This is some slick stuff.
