Group down from us today caught a most likely state record crappie. According to them and another witness it was 18" long and hovering around 4lbs-4.5lbs(not officially weighed). They called DEC to report. They measured it and took pictures and packed up quick and headed to a grocery store to find a certified scale(DEC told them to). Then I'd imagine they are going to bring it to NYDEC to confirm weight and measurements. I told the one guy about this site. Hopefully he reads this. I'm hoping to see a picture or get more info. It was caught on a tip up. By the time we made it over there to check it out they were packed up. I'm not going to give location. I'll let the guys who caught it disclose that if they wanted. New state record would be cool to see, especially to have it caught few hundred yards from us.
-
4lb crappie sounds :o
hope to see pics.
-
Sweet!!!!!
Hopefully a pic will come out.....
-
just looked up the record. looks like 3lb12oz for black, and 3-13 for white
-
black being 17.75 inches
-
Come on tell me where he got it snikles i wont fish it promisr
-
very awesome, can't wait to hear more....16 1/2"- 17 1/2" crappies are the biggest I've seen.
But these were c&r fish.
btw, if you are on a c&r waters with "no possession of fish", is it legal to take a potentially state record fish?
Just a question I've been wondering, cause I know there are record fish inbetween green island and corinth in the Hudson River. ;)
-
Been meaning to ask a Dec officer that when I see one. I wondered the same.

when you get an answer, let us know.
can you harvest a possible record fish out of the c&r hudson sections?

I believe you are right. There are some monsters in there. My personal best lgmth bass, bluegill, and channel cat all came out of that section.
-
Id like to hear more about this fish. Or pics!
-
nice fish congrats!!! caught 14/ 1/2 big bay!!

My buddy is head of the lake association for that lake. I'm sure I will get details soon. We should of went over to look as soon as he told us about it. Guy said go look they were friendly guys and they would show us. We waited and they ended up leaving. Even if it is shy of record (which the one guy believes it beats record) it still a monster. Hopefully there is some pics that surface to validate this. I even told the guy about ice shanty.com
How long to you think it would take until it was posted as official record on DEC website? If it did end up being a record.
-
I hope its true...
-
Interestingly, my youngest brother was crappie fishing on another upstate, NY body of water this past Sunday and a fella 10 yards from him landed a 17.5" crappie -- the guy didn't have a tape measure, so my brother went over and measured it for him -- my brother figured it was 3 lbs+ and thought it might be a state record, but this guy didn't want to pursue it -- unfortunately, no photos!
-
hope some pics surface
-
about 5 yrs ago fish 307 had a 19" crappie in their shop and i asked to see it. it was clearly a record. or so everyone agreed. well it turned out to be a whitexblack hybrid. which i assumeed doesnt qualify for any record. so that is definitely a possibility. i dont know if crappie hybrids are sterile or not. many others are. this would explain the large size since they dont put any energy into reproducing, just feeding.
-
maybe iI am wrong, but did'nt record come from DUCK LAKE??
-
I landed one 3 yrs ago in otisco in the spring. Thought i had the state record for sure, didnt have a tape or anything. Called dec and while waiting for them i landed an even bigger one. First one was 16 3/4in and 3 lbs. Second one was 17 1/2 and 3.6 . Missed it by 7 ounces. Was only 21 at the time. Would have been nice, maybe next time. And yes record is out of duck lake.
-
I CAMPED AT DUCK LAKE I CAUGHT LOTS OF THEM but not that big :-\
-

I would imagine if it's c&r and "no possession of fish" you'd have to throw everything back. There is no difference from taking a state record fish and putting it on the wall than taking a couple eaters for the table.
-
Hope its a records and see pictures of it
-
I browsed through ny state records for the heck of it after reading this thread... If you want a good laugh look an see what caught the state record black bullhead...
-
be nice to see a record fish posted on here! if a state is highly possiable the DEC will have a press release real soon after!
-
Hope its a records and see pictures of it
Saw a young lady, fishing by herself, on Burtis bay Chautauqua Lake about ten years ago with a 19.25 inch crappie. She was gonna get it mounted for her boyfriend for his birthday. Wonder if she still has that boyfriend?
-
The fish is at hudson river bait right now

The fish is at hudson river bait right now
I am good friends with the Ryans down at hudson river bait. I ride motorcycles with Tim and john all summer. It was caught near that area(not in the Hudson) so I bet it is that same fish. Is it a state record? Suspense is killing me. @)
-
4lb crappie sounds :o
hope to see pics.
i laughed so hard when i saw your post, cause the face is exactly what i was like. and man i cant wait to see a pic of this thing
-
Yes state record was caught at duck lake. I fished there twice this summer with small jigs and bobbers out of my kayak. Didnt catch a single one haha. Lots of descent gills and some bass. I will try again in the spring. I heard there are tons in that small body of water..
-
New York state record was definitely caught . And its at hudson river bait if you want to see it. 518462bait

subscribed for pics ...
Congrats!
-
Ive heard duck lake has some slab crappie in it
-
Waiting on pics but my buddy who owns hudson river bait just confirmed it. It is a record and was caught on the lake where I was fishing. It wasn't duck lake. He said 18.5" and 4 lbs. Didnt get official weight for 6 hours and it lost some weight. Waiting on pics to post
-
If im not mistaken i think you have to provide the lake with which it was caught for recording of the record anyways. Just like pope n young club. i think you actually have to provide the landowner you shot it ons info????
Man we caught 1 14.25 2 weeks ago and i thought that was a freak of nature
-

I believe it is a black crappie. The picture I posted is not as clear as the pic posted on the bait shop website. Here is the link. Click it. Picture is towards the bottom. Reminder, I'm not the guy who caught this. This guy was fishing couple hundred yards away from us.

Nice slab right there. The state record White Crappie was caught out of Sleepy Hollow Lake, right? So this ties it? Or is this a Black Crappie? I think the only way to tell is the number of spikes on the dorsal fin...
-
Wow, awesome fish! I've never caught one but that pic makes want to try!
-

-
Wow now that's a crappie. Congrats to him!
-
Congrats....that is a beauty..
For the fisheries sake I hope that fish was caught in a larger body of water that can sustain pressure. Once they publish the location of catch, people are going to flock there like ants to sugar. Crappie are not hard to clean out since everyone now has sonar and a clue how to use it.
-
Holy Smokes! Nothin' crappie about that! Ha ha!
Many congrats to that guy!
-

It was caught on a small Lake. Thats why I didn't mention the name of the Lake on here. DEC will announce it soon. It was an official state record black crappie by over an inch and 1 oz.
Most of the Lake is private access. There is limited public access though. I'm sure guys will flock there once it's announced.
-
im sure it will be the new hot spot
-
Wow, I would have loved to feel the fight of that fish. Congrats to the fisherman, I am sure he has put in his hours over the years.
-
Great for u hope it makes record jaw snapper
-
WOW!!! :o
-
That thing must have got a hold of some Deer Antler Spray !! ;)
-
AWESOME FISH!!!!
-
I would not be surprised if it was caught in the Hudson River, there are several honey holes with large crappies!!!
-
The fish came through a 10" hole on kinderhook lake. Supposedly barely fit. I saw it frozen, and man it was a huge fish. I wouldnt say anything but its been confirmed by dec so its just a matter of time before its out anyway. I figured you guys would want some info so there you go.
-
That's like crapasoures
WOW
-
Congrats man that is a huge crappie. It would be the only one in my lifetime that didnt end up in a fryin pan.

Just to be clear, I dont know if people took my post the wrong way, but I didnt catch it. I just saw it and talked to some people about it. Apparently the guy who caught it was from hudson. Definitely caught on kinderhook though.
-
Very nice! What a beast!
-
Can you eat anything out of that water,, i always hear most of those bodies of water up that way are no good to eat fish out of...
-
You can eat fish out of Kinderhook. Some guys say they won't eat em and some guys have been eating the fish for years. To each his own on that.

Very Nice fish! Congrats on the record. I grew up down that way and used to fish kinderhook a lot as a kid. Haven't fished there in years, although my brother fishes it a lot in summer for bass.
If I remember correctly, Kinderhook held the state record for crappie for a long while back then. guess it got it back!!!

Does anyone do actual fish mounts? I think that would be worth it. Especially when its the real thing, and not a 3d rendering. Beautiful fish.
