Title: Soft Sided Rod Bag Fix?
Post by: CJohnson27 on Feb 14, 2018, 07:10 PM
Good Evening Folks!

So I got an odd question and may end up having to do some engineering myself to find an answer...

I have an 8 rod soft sided bag. Currently there are 6 in it, in progress of getting a few more. On the one side it has a pocket for my tackle so that side does not bend. The other side does not have anything to prevent it from bending. I have a fear one of my rods might break and I really am not ready to break down and buy the striker hard rod bag.

So my question is has anyone ever done something to make a soft bag to a stiffer bag that does not bend as much?

Thanks in advance!

I had a soft 2 or 3 peice rod travel bag +/- 38” long it has 2 sides I put all the rods on 1 side and super glued in a 20” peice of 4” pvc to put the tips in and a 36” wood dowel on the bottom of the other side. I put all the rods in one side so it’s not exactly like your situation but hopefully gives you some ideas.

I used thin wall PVC for diy rod tubes. But I broke down and bought the striker bag after checking it out in person. It's awesome.  I packed it for my trip this weekend and fit 3 tip ups, 5 Finicky Foolers, 6 combos, my pool noodle with quick strike rigs, and some assorted gear (hand warmers, first aid kit, weights, etc) with relative ease.  It's a great piece of gear.

I cut a piece of scrap plexi glass to 5" wide by however long and wide the case is. Heated the plexi with a torch and bent it to the shape of my soft case. It's bent to fit inside around the 4 thinner sides of the case. The top and bottom are still soft, but with the plexi it can't be crushed or bent. keeps all my rod combos safe. Plexi fits just Inside the case and doesn't interfere with zippers. Hope this description helps, I don't have any pictures.

I got a piece of fairly stiff foam board at the $ store and cut it to fit.

I've been using the Trophy Angler bags for years now. It holds 3 Small boxes on one side and two on the other. Then it holds 6 Rods with reels in 2 separate compartments. It is made for 8 Rods.  The boxes or jigs/lures keeps it pretty stiff. http://www.trophyoutdoorproducts.com/product-page/deluxe-8-rod-ice-bag

You can also chemically weld acrylic. Cut the pieces and set them against eachother in whatever configuration needed. Use the syringe and cement and apply it down the seam. It doesn't glue the pieces, it welds them together. I've done this to make fish tanks and overflow filters in fish tanks. Even fixed a Men's Room bathroom sign with it. Cool stuff!

Interesting! I might try something like that to weld the two ends of the plexi together where They meet in the corner

I have almost the exact same bag. I am thinking that I will cut a slit in one side and run a thicker chunk of plexi down inside the sleeve. You wouldnt see it and it would stiffen up the bag.

I have an extra camp chair bag that I'm going to turn into a rod bag. Either going with stiff cardboard or styrofoam as an insert. Still in the drafting room at this point.

I cut pieces of coroplast sign board to fit the sides of my rod bag. It stiffened it up nicely, and when used with rod condoms, works like a charm

Quite similar to my set-up.

So I fixed it all up Saturday night. I took a chunk of 1/2 inch plexi glass and cut it to size. Then I cut a slit in the fabric and slid it between the liner and the soft foam they have in there. I glued the seam back up, only part I dont like, and it worked like a charm.

It's clean so there is no cardboard or plexi banging around and it stiffened it up 10 fold. With the plexi in there I have no need to go spend the 125 on the Striker bag, Even though I still want it!
