Jeff for northerns i preffer chubs or suckers over shiners any day.  For bass on tip ups shiners work well and as well as walleye but for good old fashon pike fishing anyone would say the same thing as me use the chubs or suckers.  I like to set my tip ups half of the actual depth.  Because u do know that pike sit on the bottom and always look up! So keep that in mind and good luck wit da fishin.

Big, dead bait about 2' off the bottom.

That's what I do.

Gump - Tulibees mostly but sometimes goldeyes or herrings. About 8" - 12" long.

Think I might be doing alittle prefishing tomorrow before the derby starts on the 14th. I'll let you know how I do. Hope the slush isn't too bad in the whiteshell ???

I fish for them in about 10'.  But you can be anywhere in 5 to 20', sometimes deeper.  I usually put the bait within a foot of the bottom but in shallow water they I have had them take it right under the ice.  In deep water always a foot from the bottom.

As for bait, I use a frozen smelt or herring, just as long as it has a head.

Taz -

Thank you.

Caught on a quickstrike rig baited w/ 10" tulibee in 15' of water along the drop-off at the mouth of a bay.

I like to use a 4 to 6 inch shiner.  I stagger my tip ups.  I put them from 8" to 20" of the bottom to find out where they are then I will drop them all to the same depth.

I only use bluegills for bait. 5" and up. The bigger the better. In 3' - 10' of water. They are dynamite dead or alive. Live bait halfway up from bottom and dead bait on the bottom. Bluegills are their MAIN REGULAR DIET. Best thing with gills is if you don't catch any pike you can still eat the rest of your bait!    :'(
