I'd have to say this was the season that never was! Seen them in the past and I am just happy we have not seen many here who are not here any more. I never once got my real gear or my sled and Snow Dog on the ice and I highly doubt I will this year. I had to drive over an hour north just to drop a line and only twice this season. Most of you in Orange, Rockland and Dutchess never did get what we could call safe ice. Swinging Bridge never did have safe enough ice for a snowmobile and neither did White Lake IMO. I think almost every contest was cancelled because of thin ice here in Sullivan county and I used my big snowblower exactly twice all winter so far but I did save a bunch on oil and coal to heat my house. Now we need to be concerned about the lack of run-off water to the streams, rivers and reservoirs because of the lack of rain and snow.
This is nothing I have not seen in the distant and past 60+ years so blaming it on Climate Change is simply BS. We could have a real deep freeze with tons of snow next year or even flooding this spring so fasten your seat belts. We could also get hammered in the next 6 weeks depending upon the Jet Stream and Polar Vortex.
I do wish Hardwater Diehard would re-post the winter prediction he posted back in November. How did that work out for us?

I never went out in orange county or Sullivan county this year because I didn't think it was safe enough. I like to have at least 5 inches of ice before I go out. I took a trip up to Sacandaga last weekend. 13 inches of ice up there. I caught 1 16 inch walleye on tip ups. Theres a 3 day contest up there next weekend called Food & Fuel contest. Starts Friday. Food and fuel contest is tons of fun and great prizes! How was the top of the ice? Slush snow? Want to bring ATV. Thanks

That's about the same as here Walt. We had fairly safe ice for a few days and then it got fairly unsafe and then safe again. A 16 inch walleye isn't even legal here in Sullivan county and certainly not worth the drive to the far north. I hate sitting in this house this time of year but I do like staying dry and warm. I did fish Little pond once but even it was just 5 inches and sketchy in a few spots and we caught one small trout and 5 small perch. We might try again there if we get another cold spell in the next 2 weeks. We drove up to Big pond last weekend and there was 19 cars parked along the road. We talked to most of the guys fishing close and not a single one had a fish on the ice but they all had fish stories from the guys from yesterday. That pond is a zoo but they claimed it had 7 inches of ice and it looked more like 6 to me but we just drove back home with no good place to park.

Sorry I can't give any current info about Louise Marie. Back in 1970 I worked at the Dodge Inn Steak House and fished the lake quite often. Caught lots of huge LM Bass and monster Pickerel right from shore across from the restaurant and by the water filtration building. I would expect to find an average depth of around 15 feet with possibly a deeper few spots up by the dam that might go to 30 feet.
I don't see it having a lot of fishing pressure so as long as the water has remained relatively pollution free you should have very good fishing. Top water plugs in the evening and early morning were my go to baits and worms on the bottom at night did great with big catfish. I suspect you could find nice perch and crappie as well. All the usual warm water species are present and it is a very nice lake.
Hardwater Diehard lives in this area and could probably be more in tune with the conditions today. If you do get out and bring some electronics with you report your findings as far as depths because all I ever really heard was folklore about all the bodies dumped there from the early years, 1940 and 50s. Who knows, if you bounce the bottom you could get a really big fish with cement shoes! LOL

Never had  an opportunity to fish Lake Louse Marie ..most of what I know about the lake may be  old news so here goes.. years back an old fishing friend said he only caught small/dink perch through the ice ..that would be circa 2000s . About 4 yrs ago they lowered the lake to fix the dam and I believe its a catch and release lake based on HOA rules . Its used as a water source for Emerald Green. I dont think it receives much pressure if any . Good luck  and report back about your venture.

Some history might be in order regarding these lakes. I am not the historian here but from what I have been told all of these lakes were man made back at the turn of the century to provide water for the D&H canal system. Louise Marie, Wolf, Yankee and Masten. Not sure about Wanasink. All of the local brooks, Pinekill, Gumar and numerous others all flow into or now around the old canal bed and end up in the Bashakill and Neversink that flows into the Delaware in Tri State. Long time locals probably had great and great great grandfathers all working on these projects. It is hard to imagine this area without any of these lakes or before the project just small ponds that were dug out. The same went for all the huge NYC reservoirs that were once small towns and villages. Those with the will and HS connections could probably do some history searches about the D&H canal that was built to transport coal and lumber up to Albany and Kingston. Must have been a hard life pulling barges with horses and Oxen along the tow paths. Try to imagine this area before they ever dammed up the mighty Mongaup river to form Swinging bridge, Mongaup Falls and the Rio.

Very nice Diehard! Wish I had the HS connection to search for Mamakating history having grown up between Wurtsboro, Summitville and Masten Lake. My grandfather had a summer camp in Mountain Lakes Camp above Wurtsboro and all his children including my parents settled here. My family was friendly with the Millspaugh and Norton families and we first leased and then bought the Casino at Masten Lake. It is highly overgrown today and owned now by Camp Lakota. Lots of history around these lakes and back when I was a kid all the summer homes and cottages were owned by folks from the NYC area. Great times back then with lots of great memories from when Sullivan county was a thriving summer get away destination.

Try the shoreline on the north side closest to the main road if you are in a boat.

Copy I'll be launching from the south side so was looking at the map will probably have the person im fishing with fish down there for a little bit with one of my rods while I respool their reel then head up by the dam and check out that mansion up there lol.... I fished SWB about a week ago caught 2 white perch... learned a bunch (bottom bouncers would've helped dramatically). Was my first time fishing it in about 15 years lol its amazing how much that place has been built up. Walleye were jumping all over the place (first time seeing that) and had a nice walleye about 5lbs jump out of the water next to the boat first thing in the morning in the cove across from starlight...

Lots of lakes in lower Sullivan County are gin clear ...for me it means white spinner baits ..and dark colored Texas rig worms . I am curious as to the depth of LLM ..Wanasink Lk has a good population White Bass and Smallmouths to boot ..not certain that would hold true for LLM ..I mapped some of Wanasink via my Garmin Echomap ..its has quite a lot of depth changes with a good portion of 25-30 plus fow . Will you be fishing with a depth finder/flaser ?

I have a hummingbird fission' buddy that I won that I usually bring along with me when fishing new water... its pretty basic I just use it for depth but it does mark fish but not sure on accuracy.... one day I'd like to get the open water ducer for my LX-7 but that will come after I get seats for the jonboat lol I’ll probably have my bait caster rigged with a white lipless crank and my two spinning rods with my go to tequila sunrise power worm Might switch to a more natural color if it’s really clear and another with a spinner

I started out with a BottomLine Fishing buddy in the 90s ..it worked quite well and shot out to the side as well ..great for springtime white bass on my lake ..as they would bubble up 30 or so yards out to the side of the boat ..couple casts to the side caught some fighters and then poof... gone ..fun while it lasts..but could not find them the rest of the season . That finder no longer works .. I think taking it out and using it ice fishing lent to its demise. I repurposed it ..Bracket and all as a portable transducer holder for may EchoMap  . As far a depth reading I recall it being accurate enough to make some educated action plans on any given body of water.

This is pretty funny, Its almost 90 degrees and here we are active on the IceShanty! I like going to all these local lakes with my kayak and the Humminbird GPS/finder just so I can get an idea of what is below. It is good info for us to post what we find and know to be accurate. SB is a very deep lake and right out from the public launch and heading toward the dam I recorded 70 FOW and it gets deeper as you get closer to the dam, 120 was the deepest I found. Toronto is similar but 80 was the deepest. White lake is shaped like a bowl on the 17b side with close to 100 feet. I fished Kiamesha in hard water and was surprised to find 60 feet in a couple spots but did not get all over to really know just how deep it does get. Rio has one spot off the dam that gets close to 100+ feet but mostly averages around 40-50 through the straights. Rio is tough to fish with a down rigger because the bottom comes up real quick in lots of places. A good unit can show the thermocline in these lakes and it is right around 50 feet now. Baitfish in these lakes does vary to some degree. Rio, SB and Toronto are loaded with sawbellies/alewife. Not positive what is in White lake but the belly contents tells the story. I catch nice trout in the Mongaup river on both ends and they are usually loaded with crawfish and snails but not many smaller baitfishes. I suspect LLM feeds the bigger fish cannibal style with smaller fish of the same species and sunnies/perch unless it does have sawbellies in it. Frogs, mice and baby birds are favorites of the LM Bass and Pickerel in lots of these lakes and especially in the Bashakill. I have always wanted to get in to LLM with my kayak just to do some investigating and depth mapping. Sawbellies are easy to see on a calm morning boiling the surface in large schools.

Try as I may Steve and with all the time I put in at the major reservoirs around here I have only ever caught walleyes in the Delaware and at Cliff Lake. Never caught a single one from White, SB or the Rio. I am a diehard trout fisherman winter, spring, summer and fall but damn if I can't get lucky with a wayward eye now and then. LLM should be a good fishing lake if you hit it early or late in the day or evening. Joe Hirschel owns the big house on the dam and I don't believe he is a fisherman at all. I will be surprised if it is any deeper than 30 feet but I have been surprised before around these lakes.

Gamalot it was only after joining Ice Shanty and MFF that I became aware of the various bodies of waters in South Eastern,NY. that contain walleye . Besides the Delaware river always thought I would have to venture to other parts of the state if I wanted to try and catch one.
