Title: hali jig presentation?
Post by: sphynx_000 on Dec 08, 2005, 07:07 PM
just wondering how you fish a hali jig?

What do you use for bait, and how do you jig it?

For perch, i add the chain and tip it with a minnow head.

I have yet to find a bad way to fish a hali spoon . I tip it with 3 spikes, drop it down to the bottom, bump the bottom a few times, then lift it about 6 inches off the bottom and hold it steady.  Then from there you are going to want to do any combination of wiggles, vibrations, and jigging motions, with lots of long (up to 30 seconds) pauses.  I am a big fan of the wiggle wiggle jig wiggle jig jig pause jig wiggle wiggle pause vibrate wiggle wiggle jig. ;D

Just keep trying different techniques till you find what works.
I generally keep it within 2 ft. of bottom, but not always.
The wiggles and vibrations are more important than actual jigging motions IMO.

sounds good, the wiggle/jiggle thing will be new to me,
but i will definitally expirement around with it.

When you jig, is it like a 2" and drop thing, or do you need
to move to the spoon farther to get the action from it?

Hard to screw this up.  Don't over do it.  Just drop it to bottom, crank up 6-12 inches, hang on and occasionally shake hand like you are freezing or have the DT's. LOL.  Can't believe I said that.

Are the chains an important add on?...I have yet to embrace them due to my old school thoughts..."to much metal = bad thing". But I have been very interested in giving them a shot

YES!!!  The thing is with the hali chain you get a few benefits

1. you get the dropper
2. with the chain, you don't have to worry about retying said dropper
3. the weight of the chain reduces tangling to almost nothing
4. the gold links and hook add a bit of attraction

..."to much metal = bad thing".

Try 'em, you'll like 'em.  ;D
The chain actually presents the dropper hook more naturally IMO.
I know you're an IF fan, read the article on dropper rigs again.

I used Hali's on one the Finger Lakes last year, perch color tipped with 2-3 spikes, and caught perch on a continual basis for 45 minutes. A few of the fellows saw my action and moved over next to me... None had a Hali and proceeded to catch only a sparse few. This jig allows you to get down to the bottom fast and attract fish with multiple components... flashing blades, chain glitter,, live bait hook. Drop it to the bottom, lift and drop again, then hold. The dropping stirs up the bottom and seems to attract the fish.  Great lure, try it.

Is a spike the same thing as a maggot?

They're a little bigger, and have a "tail".
Some also have glow on the back.
Fish 'em the same way.

I like tipping them with a small emerald shiner (buckeye) 1-1 1/4 inches long, right behind the dorsal fin.

After last season I have all my fishing partners using the Hali, many times I was
the only one catching perch until my friends put one of my hali's on and then
they started catching fish also. I don't know why, but they sure work.

I have a tackle box FULL of Swedish Pimples but I haven't touched one in 5 years.  I love my Hali.  I just bought some of the new chains with colors and I cannot wait to try them.  I fish about 6" off bottom and wiggle it every 30 seconds.
