Patuxent River Conditions- no fish, just scouting
« on: Jan 27, 2004, 06:52 PM »
Had some hours to kill while my son took his Boater's Safety class at Jug Bay. So I took advantage of the frozen marsh and hike down to the mouth of the Mattaponi River to check the ice where some Yellers run in the Spring. Usually it would be too muddy and reedy to make it, tried it before, but Isabel had hammered the reeds to a pulp.

Didn't have a plank or a ladder to get out to check the middle ice, but my spud easilly punched thru the shore ice. This part of the Patuxent is a no go since parts still hadn't iced over yet, but up the Mattaponi looked promising. Didn't have the time to make it much farther before having to head back. Might be worth further exploring, if you go, be considerate of the duck hunters in the blind on the opposite shore. Unless it's iced completely over, then no ducks, just fish.
