Hooks for walleyes
« on: Nov 10, 2003, 04:29 PM »
Hey guys,

First timer on the ice, for walleyes at least. Was wondering what hook combination and sizes do most of you guys use for 'eyes? In CT we can have a maximum of 3 hooks baited so an example could be the bait could have one hookt hrough the lips and point of treble in the back would be legal. But i just anna see how you guys tie these also? Any help would be appreciated, also has any of you had any luck with rocker minnows?

My brother in law and I use single #4 baitholders thru the back of a 4-5" shiner for walleye and pike with 12-20lb. flourocarbon on our tipups.  There seems to be too much extra hardware hanging off the bait when you use trebles.

Evan,
Use a single #6 treble (good quality and SHARP...a walleye's mouth is hard), one point in the bait parallel with the spine (but NOT in it), even with the front to about 1/2 way down the dorsal fin. I put mine so the point is facing the tail...that way if the fish takes the bait head first, the hooks will be going the right direction. The bait stays alive very well and the hook is in a good position to get most strikes. You should be using Heavy med goldens, sucker minnows, spottails, etc. sized bait for what you are targeting, so you only need one hook.

If you get up the the shop to see Blaine, have him show you. I'll be getting my first order of bait in about 2 weeks, and I'll post a picture for you.

Thanks Bob D. You have any ideas on bells and whistles? I was thinking of getting them in red color more attraction and all that junk. Thanks for the info so your saying... put the treble points facing front of the tail close to or earlier then the dorsal fin?

Evan,
I'm not much into extra hardware on my lines. I just use a #6 treble with 8# floro leaders. I only go with 4' of leader because I fish in some really shallow spots at night and I want the swivel off the spool so my leaders don't twist.

I have some frozen bait from last year...I'll take one out, put a hook in it and take a picture for you....It' s much easier to understand that way.

use a premium hook.  I use #8 mustad triplegrips.  If you look at those hooks wrong, they will get you  :)  My leaders are 4' long 8 pound berkley vanish flourocarbon.

Pete,
Interesting article...Couple of questions for you.

1) do you night fish with that rig?
2) Do you tip the swed with something? (minnow, mealworms, etc).

I might give it a try this year....who know.

Fish walleyes mainly at night. Prefer a big old fat golden or emerald shiner. I am not going for numbers. Good luck esox.

cause i scared to lose fish i use size 8 or 10 trebles. partners of mine use singles and hook fish. as far as the pimple on a tip up. i always have at least one rigged on a tip up. small silver and glow w/ an upgraded hook size. im sure that you can get them on slab shiners but i use med shiners or large emeralds mostly. want to get real nasty, use the pimple rig on a windless tipup.
