Quick question about walleye
« on: Jan 18, 2006, 03:18 PM »
Yea everyone talks about favorite lures for walleye  but my question is what type or area are they in what do you catch most walleye on.
                                               info would be greatly appreciated

Walleye like most fish relate to structure, they can be found in or near weeds{as long as they are alive}, near dropoff, rock or bolder shoals, humps, dips, or even near wood or stumps. With some temping you can catch walleye all day, but peek times usually are dawn and dusk. During the day walleye are usually in deeper water and are neutral or negative. At low light times they move in like packs of wolves and hunt prey in shallow waters. Walleye can easily see in low light but most of their prey can't so, it's easy picking for them.

There is lots of great info further down the board on walleye.

They can be caught on jigging spoon, Buckshot rattle spoons, Swedish pimples and Acme Kastmasters. A jig and minnow combo is a good, as is jig and twister tails, with some bait for scent. Swimming lures like, Rapala shad raps, jigging rapala, or Chubby Darters are good to try.
Go out with a variety of lures and the fish will soon tell you what they want, the main thing is to have fun.  ;D

Good luck Wa113y. :)

hopefully BigRed, Slipbob, lunatic, or some other local Saratoga Lake specialist will ring in here or send you a PM.
There are some nice eyes in Toga lake but are finicky, there are #'s in the lake but again feed sporadicly thru the day and night.
Just have to find a good weedline where it meets the sand or rock, and/or a nice drop that will be traveled my the Toga eye.
For the ice walker it is hard to get to prime spots cause they are some distance from the local access points.
Good Luck.

I have never tried bucktales for walleye but I bet a white one would work if you added a hole or half of a minnow. The clam scout sounds good should keep you guys nice and warm. :)
Good luck with the walleye, but don't feel bad if you don't get them, they can sometimes be really tight lipped in winter. :P
