Do you ever find gills cruising along the sand flats separated from the weeds or do the gills generally stay pretty close to the weeds?

the gills i find are generally where there is food, sometimes they're in the flats but that is generally during that time when there is a lot of snow on the ice, but the rest of the time i found them in the weeds.
