I'm fortunate to live on the south fork of the mighty flambeau
but we have trouble fishing because of the fast water  and using lots of weight  any suggetions

I fish the tanana river, the trick is stay close to sides where there is less current, eddies, and backwater.  Also fishing in shallower water will decrease the amount of drag on the line.  If your talking hardwater, river ice is not as strong as lake ice and it is more variable so always be careful.

have you ever tried using planner boards? the ones that trollers use? I hear they work very well for keeping your bait where you want it.
