Question, when I rig my tip-ups, I place the treble through the midsection of the smelt/herring and place a finish nail through the mouth to keep the bait straight.
I've been reading many posts on the quick set rig and was wondering if this type of rig will work, I read it on a different post. He said he places a treble through the midsection then slids a stinger with enough line to fasten a hook in the nose/mouth area. .

Kinda like that. Every Fish I have seen while spearing has attempted to grab the decoy in the head, even turned around to get a shot at the head. I'm going out Friday and plan on trying this type of rig. any suggestions?
I set one Tip-up out while spearing, in deeper water 15'. I spear in approx. 8 feet

Isn't it kinda hard to release a 20 lber after you spear it? :-\

I don't remember mentioning anything in reference to spearing a 20lb fish? You might want to make sure you read the post correctly?
Just asking some advise on quick set rigs ::)

Not saying you did. It was more of a rhetorical question.
Pretty much all I've ever read and seen about it involves the killing of big fish.
Spear away! :-\

Speared 2 fish today, one 25 iches 9:30am and the other 31 inches11:30 am-good eater's ;D, also saw one walleye, but passed, not legal to spear. Only had one flag and missed him :(. Lots of people out fishing mostly with tip-ups. Didn't see a fish caught.
must be the action of the decoy ???
