Well, the wind, rain & warm temps have ruined the ice at the North end. for a few days. The creek water is opened up, over to the boat ramp , & out in front of the creek, close to 80 yds., the shore ice is breaking up. Went about 30' out & the spud went through w/ 2 wacks.  It also looked like there was an open spot about 100 yds out. I am planning on checking it tomorrow afternoon . It should freeze back up, pretty quick. No one on 2nd. bay tonight ,but there were 2 guys on south bay, & one of them was NOT in a shanty  ???.  Forgot to mention this earlier; The gate at the North end is now working, no more free entry.

Quite a few guys on south bay yesterday. A few out on the Bible conf. & a report of about 4" of ice there. Seen 1 guy off of Ross twp. park. Baseline rd. is busted up at the shore & the North end appears to be locking back up. Very little snow on the ice. Most of what was open on Thurs., has refrozen, but the creek current still has me a bit leary. Should be good to go in a few days . Use Caution ! BTW, a Season pass for Prarieville park is $80.00, got mine yesterday. I will try & check the North end on Monday afternoon.

The north end does have 2"-3" of ice. Seen a report of 5" this morning. That's true, depending on where you check it.  I had 5" in one spot & 30' away it was 2". Still unsafe for me & I will NOT tell someone that's its OK to go out fishing there, yet. That 5" is in front of the beach, in front of the boat ramp ,thin stuff. I will check it again on Monday afternoon.

Unless someone else can report; I will not be able to give a smelt report until late, Friday night. I did get 1 report, that the ice is doing pretty good, on the north end, as of Monday. If I can get away, I will try & check ice conditions Wed. night. About 3"- 4" of snow in the past 2 days probably did not help the situation.

Seen a quad off Ross Twp. park & guys on the "Hogsback" this morning. A solid 5" in front of the creek at the north end ,Same in 40 FOW. Did not have time to check the shore ice at Baseline, but it should be ok. No Lakers this morning, only 1 small pike. Quite a few guys on the north end ,mostly after pike. My brother tried for gills & perch, & only caught 1 small pike. Headed out to the North end, after smelt tonight. Probably going to try around 90FOW. Very little snow on the ice, where I was. Probably will post a smelt report around 11:00 P.M., hoping it will be good news !

Yesterday morning there was only one guy heading out into the first bay when I drove by.
No one on the second bay.
Went by the conference and there were 3.
Drove by baseline and no one and no tracks.
Only one vehicle at the North end.

I decided to go back to the conference and there were now 7 vehicles.
Solid 5 inches of ice. People came and went most were looking for pike or perch. None doing much.
I caught 1 pike early. 30"
But I just got lucky. Nothing the rest of the day.

Looks like my fears have been confirmed. We fished in 78 FOW tonight & the only bite we had ,was a pike that hit my rig, & I lost it. NO SMELT, for us or anyone else that we talked to , & that was almost everyone out there. 7" of ice ,where we fished, & spots of 2"-3" of snow on the walk out. We did have almost solid red on the Vexilar ,from 18' -45' down, for most of the night , must have been some other baitfish. Going to borrow Smelt Jrs. underwater camera to confirm what it is. Fished until 9:00 p.m., really disappointed but not surprised. May go again tomorrow night , still hoping I can be proven wrong !

Not what I wanted to hear Smeltbuster,  I was hopeful after talking with you, now after reading your report not so much  :'( :'(.  All we can hope for is a return of them  in about 6 - 8 years like Higgins.

I almost called ya on the way home, but figured you would be watching for my post. Really got excited when the Vex lit up, but it was short lived. BTW, the guy that was fishing w/ me tonight , always kicks my butt & his son is even worse ;If he didn't catch smelt...........

Fished last night in 100-110 FOW on the North end. Solid marks from 25'-45' would come and go. Caught 1 smelt with our group of 3 guys fishing from dark until 11:30pm. Another group had 2 on the ice.

Thanks for report guy's.  Least there's a few still left. I know they still have plenty of Zooplankton to feed on.

I have no way of verifying this but deep into a conversation on another site... somebody posted that a reputable source told him they caught 300 in the second bay last Friday.
Don't know what to make of it considering the posts here about the apparent die off and the lack of any action by those trying.
I post this only to help foster hope.
I would really like to try and catch a few smelt. It's been many years. I hope they are not all gone.
