Silver, but thats my favorite for just about everything. I fished lime lake last year at the tail end of the season cause its not far from home (not cause of the scenery ;D) and I talked to a guy walking on at dusk and said he hammers big crapps at night. Anyone concur?

There is a big difference between sharing a good spot with some "ONE", and posting your favorite spot so THOUSANDS can see it......    Not sure where you live but the two best crappie lakes in NY are Black Lake and Chautauqua Lake...

You guys talk of silver lake but there are multiple silver lakes. The one I live on you can only hammer the crappy in summer, winter is a tough time for crappie here.  I have heard that lake Champlain has some good crappie fishing on hard water though.  I also have a house right down the road from eagle lake and I have a feeling that it will freeze before paradox lake.  Looks like im fishin there first.

You guys also like to keep your fishin spot a secret but why? I fished some good spots on champlain and other lakes in vermont as well as here in new york but it takes the right bait equipment and time to haul in a big catch.  Just because you gave up a good spot on here doesn't mean everyone is going to go there and fish it.  Then if there are people who will try to fish it they probably wont catch much.  On one specific lake in Vermont, fairfield pond, I was using some meal worms and pip squeks and I caught nothing.  I also had to walk through a foot of snow and even 2 feet in some spots.  The next time I was out I used some minnows and I killed the perch, I caught a fish every time i dropped to the bottom.  I caught maybe 10 perch and some were as long or longer than 13 inches but I just kept enough for a meal for myself.  The next time I went out on the ice which was a few weeks later I caught maybe 3 fish over 3 or 4 hours.  So really it takes more than just one trip from some outsider to catch a bunch of fish, even if they come back a few times they probably wont be able to perfect the technique each lake keeps secret.  For you people that are afraid to give up a good fishing spot, its a gamble but you have the home field advantage.  If any of you take the time to read this whole post I appreciate that and these are the reasons that I dont have a big problem sharing some good fishing spots.  Some spots are big enough that everyone could enjoy a good time fishing. I would rather people catching fish or even trying to catch fish in some of my favorite fishing spots because the challenge of finding the fish and getting the right technique is the best part of fishing.

It was at one time WHITNEY POINT than the state thought it wood be a great idea to put an 18 in limit on walleye. From than it has gone down hill. Many of us who remember the good days no longer fish it.They should ask the people from Minnesota what happens to the Crappie population when the Walleye population goes up.

know whats really interesting...EVERY SINGLE PERSON on here that has no problem talking up any lake or pond and can't understand why people would show retraint in naming their fishing spots - EVERY SINGLE ONE is new to the site and has been here around a year or less.   They just haven't learned the hard way.   Just ask SSmokinSS from myfishfinder about how talking up his own favorite lake worked out for him.

the best lakes are not lakes they are reservoirs. espically the ones in Westerchester county. they all hold some big crappie including a 17in 3lb 5 oz that was caught last month and won a local fishing contest. i think it came out of diverting reservoir or croton reservoir.  When i used to live down there they were always cathching big slabs in any of the NYC watershed reservoirs.   Glenida or gillead were also good, but it took forever for them to freeze.

I have done very well on Honeoye lake for crappie. I used 1/64oz bucktail jig with a chartreuse head tipped with a full niagra minnow. I fished from 8-15ft of water. I was north of trident marine. Also caught 4 walleye that day all jigging. Hope that helps, good luck!

well, guys this is my first reply I have written on Ice Shanty.I live in western ny some lakes of the lakes I have fished here r Cuba, Chautauqua,Lime, and Findley lake they all have decent fish in them but I have to say your odds for bigger crappie and quantity would be Chautauqua lake but every lake varies in technique. {Clue } to all is fish slooooooooow.

actually   i  think  rock  bass  is  a  better  fish  ,  the  meat  is  firmer  the  fillets  thicker , there  more  abundant ,easier  to  catch  most  times  and  no limit  ....... oh  and  they   fight  better  and  take   flies   really  well  ........

beleive it or not i caught a crappie last year in front of a dec officer checking fish count that was almost the size of a 5 gal bucket laying on its side in lake george . he figured it was a state record. but they are few and far between.  south bay on lake champlain is an awesome spot to catch crappies  summer and winter. very nice size to them also

Was wondering what is the best crappie lake in ny? Is it common knowldge or up for debate? I've fished most lakes in Western New York with ok success for the calicos.
Well, a good spot is Carter`s pond in Washington County. Its not a lake, but I`ve caught some nice crappie out of there in the winter and summer. :)

My area in Oswego Co. is dotted with these 30=120 acre lakes......I look for gravel, and fish the drops at dusk.  I notice that when I tie a dry fly 2'' stinger to  a small jig, I wallop them.  You might want to try that big pond just in sight of the road  ( now that theres no leaves ) on the way home from work.......it might keep you busy for weeks.

Nothing wrong with sharing some info with friends, but be careful with the entire internet. Four or five years ago on Lake Erie found the spot. Told 1 guy, and told him don`t tell anybody. Next day 40 - 50 people within feet of where we were. The catch definetely fell off!

The best crappie fishing in NY is at the local water treatment facilities .... Big clunkers can be caught around 6-7 am at the one near my house. Especially after wing night...

This past summer while fishing an FLW tournament on Champlain, I caught my all time biggest crappie a few miles north of South Bay .  It was a white crappie and I caught it on a Rapala DT 10 crankbait.  You could have closed its mouth and not known it was in there.  It was huge.  Since I was bass fishing I let it go without weighing or measuring, but for a moment I stood there in the nice cool breeze under the July sun and pictured myself all alone on a frozen lake, sitting on a bucket...   :icefish:

It amazes me, that so many people on this site took the time to write a negative opinion of the initial question , Why even click on the question?  Unless you are actually looking for spots? Apparently not as accomplished a fisherman as they would like the fishing population at large to believe.  I can respect the fisherman that puts the time on the watery/ice to find his/her hot spotsand keep them to themselves, but those same fisherman would have absolutely no need/use for this forum.  Apparently, the fisherman with the negative comments, need the attention of others(see the number of post of these people) even though they have nothing of value to offer, other than mocking the author of the post or a helpful respondent.
Be nice if a person that wasn't interested in a post, just pass it by. Not a big time ice fisherman, but in my section of the state, Chautauqua,Honeoye,Sandy Ponds would appear to have decent populations of crappie caught ice fishing.  I can understand the secrecy of bass spots with the number of money tournaments in the state, but PANFISH?? How did Iverson say it? PRACTICE???????

Crappie are probably of the most sought after pan fish for eating, i don't blame guys for protecting their honey holes. Never hear of people just C&R Crappies. SO if word gets out about a place with decent population & size, it WILL get crowded very quickly. And don't think people won't drive a long distance for them ... look what happened at Cando' with Perch !!

I don't even target Crappies, probably only caught a 1/2 doz ever through the ice  :P... so i have no say either way as to where to find them & best tatics to catch them. But IF i find a great spot during my travels ... i won't be announcing on the web.  :P   But will gladly help out with depth, lures, colors etc ...

I have found almost any body of water can be great for crappie as long as you know where to find them. Although I stumbled onto a private body of water that hold the largest I have ever seen or caught I kept ten fish to eat never weighed them but the biggest of them would of been close to the record had I known what it was I would've called had it on a scale before I breaded it up. As soon as it freezes ill see if I can get a few for pics.
