My experience Thursday was overall great as for conditions. No slush that I found or saw. The snow was hard pac and kinda drifted then. Made a rough ride but very easy.

No slush to speak of yesterday. Sun was warm today, but I doubt there was much slush today either.

4 wheelers were slow going with the snow drifts but we got around OK.

If you’ve got a snowmobile you won’t have a problem at all. The perch bite has been SLOW for pretty much everybody. Haven’t been skunked, but have had some slow days.

I walked out of Long Point on Friday. The walking wasn't bad. Fishing was tough for us. We targeted perch during the day and eyes late afternoon to dark. No walleyes for us and we only took home 9 or 10 perch.

Good luck!

Good luck.  Ice is good right now.  As of now atv with good tires/chains works or snowmobile.

Fished off long point today. Walk out wasn’t bad.  Walk in was a little tuff.  High winds and snow. Hit some big drifts and slushy spots.  Ice was 12 inches at every hole.  20 FOW.  Perch were biting all day 8-4. All small. Managed 3 keepers at 10 inches.

Does anyone actually catch walleyes in the bay or is it like finding Bigfoot?  I understand it is a quality over quantity game on the big water, but not a single person reported a walleye.....   ???

Maybe not on here, but there are hog walleye posted on FaceBook nearly every day. Chaumont hardware posts them, and the FB group "ice fish Chamount Bay" has a lot of reports as well as safety posts, maps, community updates.

I saw a 28" caught on a tip up not far from where I set up. I also had three monster fish come in and chase, but not eat. Who knows exactly what they were but they acted and looked like giant walleyes on my Lowrance. Sometimes they just don't bite. The guys that fish there more often are more in tune with whats working. Its a place that requires perseverance. I'm sure a little local knowledge goes a long way too. The guys at the hardware store have always pointed me in the right direction.

I haven't targeted walleye. As much as i want to, its hard to go out deeper and maybe find one when i can (normally) go shallower and fill a pail of perch.  That hasnt been working out so well this year either.

Ive heard of the random shallow walleye but haven't hooked one myself.
A guy i was fishing with a few weeks ago lost a slab grabber to a big walleye that broke him off in 15fow.

I’ve only fished the bay a few times, I did catch a huge walleye a few years ago on a bright bluebird day.

I do stop at the hardware store and usually they are good with the info, but last week the guy giving out bait was a little light with anything in particular.  Just “could be anywhere”, hard to say what they are biting” and so on.  All true of course.  He did give a generous scoop of minnows though.  First time I went in there the guy pulled out a map and marked a couple of spots on it and was very helpful.  We did very well that day!

Yes we were there for the last 3 days. Very passable with no issues. A few snow drifts here and there 12 to 15 inches. The bite on Herrick was not there for us. A few sniffers was all . Good luck!!

Everyone always says the hardware store is great and will help you out and give you information, and Ive never gotten anything beyond a cold "here is your bait, pay up front" kind of attitude. Not friendly, not helpful.

They post alot of information on FB, but in person Ive never seen anything remarkable in regards to customer service.

Maybe there has been a change in ownership of management in the last few years?   Or as suggested, it a long season of answering the same question "Where they biting?" all the time.  Still, the best and only place I know to get bait or supplies in Chaumont.

And BTW, they were never rude or anything but nice.  Not knocking them at all!

It has not changed ownership. Greg is always helpful if you ask him questions. Sometimes since he’s not out there he might just not know where the best spot is. Fishings been slow on the whole bay this year kind of hard to point people in a direction.

I called the hardware store last year when I was toying with the notion of heading here and they were very helpful in talking about the different access points people use and places to avoid traveling.  Chamount Masters also gave me some good insight on where I should be looking for different species.  Glad to hear that people do catch big wallers here.  I was beginning to doubt if it was worth the trek.  I need to give CM another call to see about accommodations soon, assuming the warm up does not start to accelerate too quickly.  Thanks for the insights.

You can toot his horn if you want. But after only 2 experiences in there my personal opinion is I will find things I need while fishing Chaumont else where.
Not a place worth my business. Just personal experience and this more recent time was worse.

I am heading up there this weekend to do some perch fishing in my usual spot but if the bite isn’t happening I want to switch over to walleyes.  What size leader do you guys use up there? I have 17# fluoro and wondering if that’s too heavy?  The next size down is 12# but worried if I hook a lifetime fish it won’t hold up. Would love some experienced input, thanks.

True unless the fish inhales the lure and the teeth are in direct contact with the line.  Nothing worse than seeing eyes glowing at the bottom of the hole and the rod tip snaps up without a lure on the end.  That last 10” of the fight is when line strength really counts.

I fished out of Long Point again  this evening in a slightly different area. Had a couple on me, but no love.

I'm not going to blame that on the bait shop employees for not telling me exactly where to go though... I don't know exactly what you expect when you ask for advise, but I've never had anyone give me an exact spot. If they did that for everyone there would be 300 guys on the same shoal. The Hardware Store has excellent bait, all the jigs and lures you need to fish the bay, and a friendly staff. What more could you ask for... Greg can't have a 15 minute in depth conversation with everyone that walks in that shop wanting to catch a 12 pound walleye or 100 perch. I guess some people just expect to be spoon fed. :'(

I run 8# seagaur flouro and like it. The walleyes have been picky for me lately, so my suggestion is go as light as you feel comfortable. My other suggestion is to keep your expectations realistic. You're not going to catch a trophy every trip, or every year for that matter - You will, however, have the chance every time you fish Chamount.

Thanks Setterman, that’s what I was looking for.  I want to at least have a shot at hooking a walleye but didn’t want to overdo or underdo the presentation.  I figure if I’m wasting time not catching many perch I may as well waste that time trying for a walleye.

Greg is on point with his conditions and bait!  If you want someone to take you to the fish then hire a guide!  Anyone who prints up topographical maps of the lake and circles bad ice spots and directs you to possible honey holes deserves some respect.  I know people who go every year and they got skunked on a three day trip.  It is called fishing.

Not everyone has the same experience every transaction, so even though you get top notch service every time you go in, not everyone else does.  I don’t need anyone to guide me to fish, I get “fishing”.  It is a great resource and store, but unless you get “Greg” every time, it is not that above and beyond.   I’ll still buy bait there, and still look at the Facebook posts.

Yes, but don't turn right right away off the ramp. You want to go out in to the channel first, then turn right.  Also, much of that shoreline along 3 mile point is the first to start softening during warm temps.

I was actually just out there. Very slow. Gonna get some food and head back out in a bit.  Hit slush in the snow drifts other then that it’s melted down and started crusting over not a bad drag I wouldn’t think just the walk itself be any easier tho.

And we can tell who Greg’s buddies are, cuz y’all took offense when everyone was saying they just didn’t care for the place. I didn’t see anyone really talk down about the place.

I fished it today, 12+ inches everywhere. Some spots it’s glare ice, some spots it’s six inches of snow, some spots it’s 4 inches of slush. Kind of all over, but it’s solid ice for sure. (At least out to Herrick is)

Out here since 7:30, wind has been pounding all day and getting a little slushy. Glare ice in some areas. Perch bite is great when they come through hitting anything I can get down the hole fast enough, then shuts right off.

Ok. I guess I didn’t sit and watch them do some training off long point today. I then heard later that someone went thru @squaw island. Not sure when but I had already left long point and the FD at that time. The recovery divers finished up about an hr or so ago retrieving the atv and maybe other gear from last week.

As we walked off the ice tonight anyone going out Sunday should know that the entire area from the launch to duck bay(probably all of Chaumont) is slush and standing water on the ice.  Anyone on machines will get soaked if they try to bolt out in the morning in the dark.

I heard that something had gone thru in duck bay/mouth of river area semi recent as well but no conformation. Wind has laid down a bit and the slush and snow are gone. Now there are puddles ponds and lakes as deep as 3-4” not horrible as for travel just kinda sub par conditions. Good luck out there hopefully a few more weeks yet.

I will apologize for my last post! Went into hardware store for bait on Thursday morning. I asked for shiners and They were listed as small shiners. They were 3” or larger. So then I asked for emeralds and they were 3”. I then asked for buckeyes and Greg said “you don’t even know what you want”. So I grabbed a scoop of fatheads because I wanted 1-1/2-2” emeralds.
I know what I wanted and small shiners are not 3”. I don’t care what I spend for bait as long as it is what works. I drove 4 hours and was treated like an idiot.
Well we caught a bucket load of perch on my old 2” emeralds and nothing on fatheads. I will now bring all my bait with me instead of stopping in town for it.
This was my first bad experience at Chaumont hardware and I apologize for giving crap to those who said that they had bad customer service at Chaumont Hardware.
Tight lines to all and stay safe. Btw got a 14” perch on my old bait.

Probably a long shot but apparently I left my strikemaster ice auger in the parking lot last Saturday and wondering if anyone on here recovered it?  I went to use it today and realized I didn’t have it in my shanty. End of the season for me now.

I called the hardware store and left my contact info but since it hasn’t been reported by now I think it’s a lost cause. Who knows, maybe someone may still report it. 🤞

Have a friend there now. I'll let him know just in case someone is aware.

Anybody still on Three mile bay?  I know the public launch is probably a washout by now, I'm just wondering about the ice on the bay and shoreline along 3 mile point.

Just received a text from a friend about a dive team being sent to Chaumont to recover someone. No other details, sounds bad.

Sure that wasn't Chippewa?

Not saying it wasn't both, just cant find any news or FB posts about Chaumont anywhere.

I was only reporting what was reported to me by my friend.  I assume this happen this afternoon and that he heard it on his scanner. He lives in St Lawrence county so it may have been the accident you referenced.  I have not received any other details.  Unfortunately, I could not review the article from the link in your post, it was redacted, perhaps top secret.

I have the problem with that site from my phone. On the laptop it works fine, but on the phone it makes me answer a survey to reveal the article, but still doesn’t work after the survey.

They were the first news site reporting it, but now it’s been on 7news and newzjunky and others.

After contacting my friend, he confirmed it was the same report you reported for Chippewa.  He said they were soliciting divers from Chaumont and other areas to assist with the recovery.  It is unfortunate to lose someone’s life for a few fish.  I can not wait to get my boat in open water.
