Let me in this discussion ..please  ;)
Yesterday I was on the ice , I fish a small lake compered whit Oneida , when I got there four individuals already set  tipups but they ware 75' apart if not more , now you do the math 20 tipups  ::) , is a rule regarding haw far tipups can be installed ? I jig only so I don't need allot of realstate .

No distance as long as they are present when the tipups are in

Yah there is no rule on distance and I don't use tip ups but I would also think it depends on how deep your fishing to. If I did use them I would only spread them apart as far as the depth so they don't get tangled.

More than likely you fishermen are preaching to the choir..  ..  The ones that are crowding are not on here... They may not think they are bothering you..   However, if the crowd me  hard or soft water, the will sure know it when they are too close...  If they were picking berries would they want you to jump into the hedgerow 50 ft in front of them ???

I tend to move till I find fish then throw the tipups out. I catch more fish jigging but the bigger fish on the tipups.

Thinking about heading out from William Park tomorrow afternoon, any advice as to what depth the bite is at out there?

I'm going old school... hand auger and no electronics.

You have to place them 2x the the amount of line on the tipups, apart. If you get a fish on 2 tipups they can swim towards each other and tangle.. Have had it happen more than once...

Really??? you're gonna set 5 tip ups 300 yards apart and think someone isn't gonna encroach on your 1200 yard claim?  That's a bit excessive....

Not looking for any ones spot or honey hole just a little guidance. I have a lot of respect for the guys who know the lake and catch their limits everyday, and someday I would like to be in that category but I have a lot to learn and have to pay my dues. With that said...I'm wondering where I should target eyes early on...I have been doing best like 10am-noon which seems odd. Today I fished all over and 1 jumbo and a burbot. Should I be off the edges of shoals, flats on the shoals, or just keeping fishing random humps that I see on navionics? Any help would be appreciated as I try to improve as a fisherman.

U should always respect someones área if they were there first u should find another spot if its not a big área u want to fish. first come first serve in my book! Go setup somewhere else at least far enough away so i cant hear u wrestling through your stuff,But the ones i really feel bad for is the walkers. Lets face it its tough for the walkers to get to most spots come mid winter transition for the eyes. The ice is thick enough for machines to run all over, but yet most just hop from shanty city to city, I dont get it. Go Explore and u might just find something else thats worth fishing where some of us cant get to. And whoever was makeing all that noise with a machine of somesort for while Sun morning from Godfrey to apps somewhere in the mix GET IT FIXED sounded like a construction site up there very annoying and Im sure i wasnt the only one that felt that way

I have an idea. The next time you think someone is to close to you just go drill a hole a foot from there hole and ask them if they don't mind sharing. Who know you may strike up a conversation or make them mad an move. Just a little taste of there own medicine maybe. By the way I don't fish next to someone who is alone out there. There out there alone for that reason.

I've seen someone do this and I have to say it took balls and was funny as hell.

It's all about etiquette. Fished Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday same spot. There was a group of four of us. Saturday guys sets up rather close to us. Ok no problem fish away. After ten. I ute she jumps out of his shanty waving his arms like he was having an emergency. Moments later here comes the entourage. 10 plus sleds and wheelers set up on top of us. Next day there are 50 to 75 guys on the same spot. That is BS any way you look at it.

I agree!!  I try to stay between 50-100 yds away from the next guy unless he's in my fishing party.  I like my space, and I try to give others the same.

Bingo. You can drill just as fast with a good hand auger.

Ya, at 23 , now try to do it at age 62.  Drilling a couple holes isn't bad but if you need to move you won't when your older or if you use tip downs.
