does anyone ever fish Oneida in the dark? I've done well on the st Lawrence at night. just wondering cause I never hear anyone doing it on Oneida.

I fish big bay for crappies quite a bit after dark. the snowmobiles are an issue but my clam is refelctive and I've been known to hang glow sticks on it as well.

I found a post on the equipment section last year that showed how to make scratchers out of a hay rack fork. They attach to the skis.  Cost about $20.00 and they work really well. They throw a good mist of ice chips.  That and a fan cooled sled and your good.

I melted the sliders off my old sled several years ago, not good, ended up having to rebuild the engine. My brother said why are sparks flying out of the track, I stopped, the engine stalled and wouldn't start. Also ruined the vintage track, which took forever to find a replacement, expensive lesson learned.

Who is on the lake today? Wanting to come out but don't wanna waste a trip to get blown around. If you could let me know how the wind is I would really appreciate it. Thank you

Dang...sorry about that lesson learned slamboney. I had these ice scratchers put on for this season.

scratcher, spring loaded up, not being used to scratch...

scratcher spring loaded "down", scratching the ice position

I was told the sliders can actually melt and seize up the track, not good.

I ran my sled all last winter pulling my 2 man just went slow 10 mph and had no trouble, this year I put sheet metal screws in the track to make some chips and traction, one of my buds did this last year and it seemed to help screw them parallel with the paddles , and dish soap also works ,and I have seen windsheild washer motors hooked up to pump dish soap  on to the rails

choo choo, I had to go with these, you can go reverse without ruining them. With my senility it was a no-brainer for me.

10-15mph is my usual, with dish soap I could be safe?

Those are nice scratchers Bart, i kinda remember we had talked scratchers last spring, late ice here on this thread. I don't have reverse on my sled, so I put on these 40 dollar a pair scratchers.

For those w/o scratchers, you can mix up some slider lube. Mix windshield washer fluid with 1/4 bottle of dish soap and squirt it on the sliders and go slow like Fred said. Great fishing guys, great pics and videos! Simply awesome, I never saw so many walleyes before or so many Big fish! Keep it up, have fun and be safe out there. Plus, don't  forget your creepers!

I looked at those scratchers Bart. But my sled is a 96 Indy and the spring ones are good enough. Just hope I can remember to put them up when I hit the parking lot.  Still, I am taking the Atv. I don't trust driving a couple of miles on glare ice, even with scratchers and a fan cooled engine.
I will probably hold off 'till Friday Chief. Can't shake this dam cold.

To add to what "Crosseyed Jig" stated about calling when you suspect illegal activity. The tip hotline is at times a slow response, call goes to Albany first. A call to your local state police or sheriff's office is the best approach. They are tied in radio wise with ECO's, they can get someone to your location as quick as anyone and much quicker than Tipp Hot Line. Other numbers that may be called are "regional office, law enforcement" during regular business hours. Call the ECO directly if you want to give added details, most often you will get a recording device. ECO's don't sit by the phone much. Sportsman and women are what ECO's depend on !! When I was in the field calls of concerned sports people resulted in 50% of my apprehensions. Beats trying to find the bad sportsman when you have a patrol area in excess of 300 sq. miles !! Remember, you are only helping yourself !!  JTP

It's never happened while fishing, but during hunting season I watch a large area. I keep all 4 regional ECO's phone numbers on my phone at all times. Calling an ECO is the best way to get something done about it. I've delt with troopers before and never had much luck. Document what you see and try to get/remember as much information as possible...

X2 - I just go slow and I have not had an issue yet. My sled is liquid cooled as well.

I am curious about your sheet metal screw "studs" though. Will they hold up okay? Did you actually screw them into your paddles?

A great option that I used to use when I ran sleds on the lake was "Food Grade" Silicone spray.   You can get it in big spray cans at any restaurant supply store.  It's made to withstand extreme heat, it's non toxic and it stays where you spray it !
It's mostly used for the hinges and moving parts in pizza ovens, rotisseries and other  restaurant cooking apparatus.    Matter of fact, if you spray down your track and suspension, it keeps the ice from forming on them as it sheds water really well !
I use it on my augers to keep the ice build up at a bare minimum.   Being non toxic, I've sprayed it in the ice hole to keep it from freezing !
Pretty universal and handy stuff !
