Hotdogs on tip ups??!??!!
« on: Nov 29, 2011, 08:46 PM »
For the last few years I have heard rumors of an old gentleman using hotdogs for pike on a local lake. I have never personally witnessed this but it makes me curios. Anyone tried it? I can usually do pretty well on this lake for hammer handles on dead bait and get fewer but larger pike on live suckers. I have little doubt that the live or dead fish I usually use will catch more fish but I just have to try a hotdog.....

It will be very embarrassing if I don't catch one on a hotdog but one heck of a story if I do!

Anyone man enough to admit to trying this?? haha

Last season I was unable to get to a bait shop in time to get my suckers and since the following morning when I was going to be fishing was a Sunday all the local shops were closed. I did alot of searching on here and read quite abit about hotdogs for pike. The next morning I stopped at Sav A Lot and picked up a pack of hotdogs for $0.79. My buddy went to walmart the night before and bought every dead bait they had. He tried several different setups and got his only flag on a piece of hotdog. I used only hotdogs (in various sizes and presentaions) and had a few flags and caught the only pike of the day. A nice fat 22 incher. It deffinately made me a believer and while it will never replace my shiners or suckers I always take a pack with me incase I should happen to run out of bait, want to change it up a bit or as a last resort just get hungry myself.

I have caught them on hotdogs also. Not my go to bait, but yes I have caught pike on hotdogs.

I've done it while icefishing for pickerel. I bet it would work with pike too.

I just used a whole dog and set it up on a quickstrike rig.

The pike around here prefer brats, cheddar brats if you got 'em!
