Snowmobiles only. I got lucky and caught a ride out yesterday by the nice guy from the madriver club that has that big kabota 4x4 with tracks, not so lucky was dragging my clam back to shore. I was hitting snow up to my knees at times also a lot of slush. My left arm went numb several times, i am pretty sure i blacked out once or twice....did catch and release a huge smallmouth. Caught about 10 8 inches or better. A ton of dinks.  Got to chit chat with my buddy STU!  At least it was warm and little wind.

Anyone know what kind of condition the pond is in after all the storms? Im going to GP wed just wondering how much snow I get to look forward to.  I was there twice last week and there was about a foot of snow and it was a tough drag out.

How does the scoring work?
Title: Re: Sandy pond
Post by: obrien380 on Feb 17, 2015, 02:48 PM
Pike and perch both have 1st 2nd and 3rd places and are judged by length weight is the tie breaker.  Panfish king only has one winner and consist of "bluegill, pumpkinseed, sunfish, and crappie" 5 fish judged by total weight tie breaker is combined length of all 5 fish and will have the same payout as a 1st place pike or perch

Youth divisions are pike and perch 1st 2nd and 3rd places youth will receive trophies

Looking at the temps and the wind. I got to be nuts to even think about going out today. So, guess what? I am nuts. Real old school today guys and gals. The Sandy Creek Fire Department and The Wayside are having their tournaments this week end. I feel as if someone should make a report today on conditions. That one guy out from the Wig-Wam on snow shoes sitting on his pail snuggled up in his old Eddy Bauer snorkel with the wind at his back will be the nutty fisherman, moi. Better news is the weather for Saturday looks to be a heck of an improvement and I would encourage all to get out and support the fire department and the local businesses.
Jboggey1...try to find someone with a snowmobile so you can tow a shanty out there today...sitting on a bucket? Dangerous cold out there today....they might get the wind strength wrong. Stay safe

I looked at some snow shoes today, but i know whats gonna happen, i blow a hundred bucks on them, wear them tomorrow for the derby, makes it a tad easier, then sunday it warms up and rains and i never use the snowshoes again...i just wont walk as far!  Got me three of those raffle tickets when i signed up tonight!

Yo Choo Choo and BigSunny.
Glad to hear from you both. Yup. I am getting older and even if the brain is not cognizant, the body is ready to relent. The cold never bothers me. I can dress for anything. It is the getting to and fro that bothers me. Sad this season has developed as it has. You don't have to be old to regret the formation of the ice field this year. I am sure it has kept a lot of you younger fellas at home as well.

At any rate, till I can get an easy ride or access by my 4 wheeler I am going to listen to my body and not my brain. I am going to act my age. I will have to consult with Tank and Wert to find out how they process this.
Conditions this year have gotten nasty JBoggey.  Better day's are coming. :) :) :)

Fished the Elms today with my son,--first time with the new pop up shanty--just a handful of people out there--the persistent winds and snow/slush combination made it pretty brutal dragging our sled, setting up and taking down.  Caught some dink and medium-size perch on spikes/minnows at 8 feet. Lost a pike who grabbed a minnow on my ultralight and broke me off. Finally exited our toasty shack to face a heavy windy snow, and a dozen gulls closing in on our fish.  Much thanks to the guys who gave us a ride and a tow back to the lot after seeing us struggle in the knee deep snow. That gave us a second wind for the long snowy drive back. Some great folks out there!

Fished it with my daughter yesterday left out of wigwam about 7 am. The walk out was great, nice and packed only a few inches to walk through. After shoveling an area for the shanty setting up tip up/downs, caught about 6 keepers and a pile of dinks. Wind was bad, snow was bad good thing i had my daughter with me, on the drag back i was sinking upmto my knees everymstep, she could walk right on top and did most of the dragging. Didnt even have anything to turn in for the sandy creek fd derby, biggest was one 10 inch perch.  It was still a good time with my daughter.

Tommy, nice to hear that you were able to get out Saturday, especially with the kid.  Sounds like she made the difference getting you back in to shore, we all know how that is. Unfotunately for me, that job thing keeps getting in the way of that fishing thing. Was there a good turnout for the Derby?  I'm gonna miss out the next 2 weeks as well, gonna check out the ice in FLA for a week. I'll be thinking of you and Boggey while next to the pool.   ;D ;D

Yeah, i about stroked out.  Not a lot of people fishing that I could see, as a matter of fact there was one shanty out when it started, another guy stopped me in his car and asked if the derby was still on. I didnt even go to the wiegh in, so I am not sure what the total turn out was.

My way of saying as it warms...bring a float. Its deep. Anyone ever had a problem with sleds running over tip ups on the pond? Had a close call. My buddy managed to stop him. He was that close to the shanty running through 15 tip ups. Must have been drunk because he gave him a nice pat on the back and the idiot almost fell off. I have very little respect for a snowmobile that has no gear in tow.

pond  has  been  producing   good  crappies  and  nice  gills  and  sunfish ....I really  don't understand  why  people  don't  fish  for  whats  there  instead of  dreaming of  years  past setting on  vacant water ...but that's  how  I see  it

its all about the perch,pike,
had my fill of vacant water this year, thats fer sure!

Post by: trapper2000 on Mar 14, 2015, 10:53 AM
biggest  gill I  ever  seen  was  caught on  sandy  pond ....   and  since  I  was a  kid   when perch  got  slow  we  would  hit   the  weeds   lot  of  slob  gills  and  you'd  be  surprised  how  many  shallow  perch !

now  i'm on  the  soap  box   I get  to  say  my opinion...I  don't  think  sandy pond  got  fished  out , I  don't  think the  mouth  got  filled  in  ...I  never  believed   perch   came  in  from  the  big lake  anyways  ...I  think they live  there  year round  ....  I  think the  lake  Ontario  perch are  simple  on a  low  cycle ...sandy  pond  isn't  the  only  spot  that's  not  prodoucing  well.

another thing  is  people  got  spoiled  to  drilling a  hole  and  catching a  limit in the  matter  of  2  hours  ....  that  type  of  fishing is  never  going to  last  for  ever

since  I  was  a  kid  .....and  that  was a  few  years  ago  some  tears  the  pond  prodouced  others  it  doesn't  ,highs  and  lows ,this  year is a  low  and  it  might  be  for  awhile   sodus  isn't   kicking out  limits  like  it  did  in the  past   neither is  fair  heaven ....
my  suggestion  is   easy   set the   tip ups  out   try the  outside   for  perch  if  nothing  come  to the  inside  and  get a  diner  of   gills

Unfortunately looking like a busy week this week for me, hopefully ice holds for next week to get out one last time ::). I need to hook up with Tommy again so he can continue to school me, this time on the Crappie.  That'll be a new one for me.  His help certainly proved meat worthy this winter for some pike. Thanks Tom.  If there is one last hoorah keep it posted so that I can make time, especially since I had to miss the 2-man.  I certainly appreciate all the info you fellas keep posted at the pond.  Being out of town it sure makes a difference when making plans to head for the camp. You can take the boy away from the Pond but not the Pond away from the boy.  Whoever made the comment "once the ice starts going it goes fast" has certainly been there done it.  Be safe!!  Thanks again to all!!

Last outing on the pond the ice was plenty thick. I found some over 30 inches. I did venture to Chaumont last night and found some 6 inch ice and muddy water. Was pushing close to current but I can now see the runoff is reaching the lake heavy.

Boggey,

Are there any good marinas up there that let you pay to use the launch for the whole season? I'll never try making it across the bay in my boat again. Got caught in ten foot waves on the way in. No fun in my little bass boat. Lesson probably not learned...I seem to have been there done that in Chaumont years prior.

Never seen the ice on the pond this late but I want to get out again. I was hand drilling 8 I need to get the 6 inch back out. I lucked out having a steel leader I was looking for fins. He almost chewed through it. I did nail a fin on a tiny tungsten. 2 lb test no leader. 26 in. awesome fight as well.  Both took more than 15 min to land. Heard the waves coming in so if it was froze over out in the channel it's definitely not anymore

Or is that opening up? Hoping to get some fish in the bucket in the morning and get some framing work done on the camp aftrewords.  Jim, how ya feeling? Thanks for the info last week Duke.  Glad I made the trip up.  The bit of snow made for a decent trek out, the wind in the face on the other hand..... ::)  Even with a slow start to the morning I had the best day this year.  Although my daughters couldn't make it due to several sports commitments, my father did join me.  I was however able to Bring home enough for dinner as well as few for the freezer. NICE!  I was second guessing my decision as I battled the wind while putting up my shanty, but then all was good. It seemed like when they came they came big and plenty.  I was surprised at the amount of ice still on.  I think I may be paying extra for boat storage this spring.
As always thanks to all for your information and making this another great year on the ice, minus the fish. ;)
I came home with a good days catch and got some work done on the camp.
Be safe!

There are some thin areas that may be open water shortly off the elms. Alot of wheeler activity. Surprised to see so many machines out.

Thanks for all the tips. Had a great winter on the pond. I pulled a good size bag of trash including propane tanks off tuesday. Can't wait to have my boat out on the pond. Learned not to play around in the bay with it last year. Been hitting the trout spots now. No more ice for me. Good luck guys and enjoy the warm weather. Whats mff?
