Line poundage.
« on: Feb 26, 2013, 01:43 PM »
What weight line do you like for jigging for perch and crappie?  I've been using 3-4# and as curious what others have been using.

Thanks

Go as light as you can. I say this if your fish become line weary go to 2 lb lines if the fish tend to be somewhat easy to catch and could care less about the fine details then of course stay with the 4 lb. We have a couple lakes like that around this area it seems that you could fish with 20 lb line and it does not make a difference. On the big lake when we can get on it I would not go out there with anything less than 4 lb. We fish 50 ft or deeper and the Perch run 10" up to 16" average.  On the other hand we got one lake that the fish are just the opposite and need to be finessed. So all in all it just depends on the lakes you fish.  Spool up a rod with 2 lb and test it out yourself see if there is a big difference and go from there.

A true 2# test line is adequate if you know how to use it, 3# is superb for anyones use. But many of the 2# lines on the market actually test out at around 4#(sometimes more) a true IGFA 2# line will break at 2#. Depends on the brand and the illusion of greatness they're trying to sell

I have a rod or two with 2 pounds on for gills.  Ive caught perch on that as well.    This past weekend I was fishing a lake, and I thought I had some perch that were playing hard to get, so I down sized to 2#'s and a marmuska jig, and caught a Lake trout in 60 feet of water!!!  That was fun.

#2 should be good as long as the line is good quality and new.

I tend to use a lot of four as it happens fairly often to find a walleye in with the normal crappies and gills. And with some of my jigs costing 2.00 or more I don't want to loose them

I was on a bus and just happened to be sitting on a news paper. This guy came up and asked. "Are you reading that ?"
I said  yes, stood up, turned the page and sat back down.

2# for small jigs
4# for spoons

over 4#, if using a perch rig, cause it really doesn't matter, as long as I can bring the bottom weight up without fear of the main line breaking.

unless I am fishing for walleyes I fish #2 period.  Only time I have ever had a problem is when I am dumb and try to catch to many fish without re-tying.

Mostly 3 and 4# becuase I hate having to reach down the hole to grab them fishes.  Plus I like to have a little more assurance when I get those bigger fish.

2,3 or 4 lb all work well and I see little difference to line shy fish with crappie. Now the true big bull gills seem to be more line shy,I use mostly 2lb for gills but have used 1lb but if you don't retie often a few lost jigs. Some of those jigs cost $2 or more so its a push a few more fish or 2-4 lost jigs? A good down the middle line is 3lb for all panfish.

Don't go over six if you only target those species. I use 8 and can still catch them but I mainly target pike.
