I would hit the south end of Eagle Island or deep waters off the point provided the ice is safe. We haven't been out yet to report on the ice conditions. Check with Bay Bridge or Warren's on ice conditions. @)

Good place to start is bay bridge or davenports. Both are at the south end. Id say a bunch of folks should be out tomorow....kinda follow the crowd! But be safe first and foremost!

I live less than an hour from Sodus and have never tried it, mostly because my fishing partner is near Buffalo.  But I hope to venture out there some time this year.

Where is their public parking at the South end?  At Davenport's?
Does Davenport's also sell bait?  A friend mentioned a bait shop by the bay bridge.  Anyone know the name?

Finally, is there any public parking near Spiegel?

Thanks

Davenports and bay bridge both sell bait. There is parking there but get there early. Spiegel also has some parking but again get there early for a good spot to park. No safe ice as of now from what ive heard and read.

3 of us fished out from bay bridge bait shop today.  very windy, ice was about 4" with very little snow on top.  water was stained or murky.  we did very poor,, fishing from 7:30 a.m. til 3:00 p.m. .  so poor, that i'm embarrased to tell you the total number of "keeper" perch.  needless to say, it was a LONG two hour ride home.  o well, lets hope we hit them next time.

I've fished other parts of the bay, but have driven by Third Creek before.  I have seen lots of guys on machines, and people way out there.
Is it always a good hike out to the good fishing waters there?  I often fish with my young kids and/or my father, so long walks are not always possible.

100-150 yards is nothing!  They can handle that.  The time I drove by last year, there was no one in close.  It looks like everyone was at least 1/2 mile or more off shore.

you are right TMIB   keuka has to be talking about some other area.. I have made that walk a million times.. off shaker heights rd   150 yds will get you in 10 fow water if that...  when I am out to 30fow  I see my small tiny truck, and dread making that walk back especially with snow like there will be... freakin work out.. good luck    1/2 mile is about right and then some.

I fish sodas a lot. I say check off the point on the north end. If you go to the point there are a lot of bars. There is a point that sticks out into he bay out there. On the south side of that point there is a little street named Maiden lane. There is a little spot to walk out there if the ice is safe and people are out there. If no people out t5here dont try it,. Peoplke fall in there all the time ealry and late ice. If not you can stay right up there on the north side. On the northwest side of the bay are a bunch of marenas. Thetre is a boat loaunch over there where you can walk out. Its uselly packed and you fish in ten to 15 feet. The slobs come in deeper water. If you get bait at the bay bridge (I recomend you do so) cross the bridge and turn on Lake Bluff road and there is a mareiana named conolies cove. There is always good early ice there. Like others said if its your first time follow the masses. THis year I am fishing Oneida becasue im close to it. Im missing my Sodas bay. I fish 4-5 days a week when im home from college on Sodas. Maiden lane is the ticket. If you get tot go there the hot spot is 2-3 hundred yards out and 100 to 150 east from the log cabin like house you will walk out from. I hope this helps. Let me know how you do. I am actually going to be on Sodas this weekend. Message me if you want my phone number.

Thanks.  I just started fishing Sodus last year, and did most of my fishing out of Spiegel, which was all right, but negotiating that steep downhill with gear is a bit tricky.  It was on one of those trips that we drove up to Third Creek and checked it out on the way back home.

I have made that walk in 2 ft of snow, no lie, I thought I was going to die coming back, one guy was trying to get out with a 4 wheeler..  they were pushing every 10 ft, did not get far.

I did miss speak, its about a half mile to the deep water, 150 yards will get you to 10ft deep and I do see a few guys fishing there, not sure how they do but I always have better luck out deep. Would like to get out with the wheeler tomorrow, ice was 4" thick Wednesday I would think it would be thicker with temps but not sure how much snow is on the ice and how much ice grew with snow on it, anybody see any wheelers out there yet?

One of the worse wheeler days I had on Sodus was three yrs ago. We had over a foot of snow on the ice that turned the ice underneath to that horrible water/slush. Even with 4 wheel drive and chains on all four tires, we were stuck numerous times. Even had to get help from a few more guys to push, run the thing in.  First thing I did when I got tho the car was buy a sled! Best move ever, sled for snow, wheeler for glaze ice.

The season has now officially started for me Rick. I will p.m. you before I head out therre. Going to try a new technique this year - they are called tip downs or tip ups or tipsy do's I don't know - never used them before ;D ;D ;D

Tip-downs work awesome for perch on the bays on Lake Ontario!  We have been using them for years now, and catch most of our fish on them.  Seems many of the perch in the bays hit so light, they don't trip the traditional tip-ups with flags, but get a rocking tip-down where there is no resistance, and you see a lot more bites and catch a lot more fish.

My only advice is if you get into the fish pretty good, don't put them too far apart or you'll be running around like a mad man!

Have fun and good luck!

I made if out on the northwest side today out of the boat launch on first creek.  Made it out to 20fow a lot of lookers and extremely light bits, couldn't get one above the ice though.  According to the GPS I was .6 miles as the crow flies from the boat launch a little to the south east.  What an absolute miserable drag.  I took my tape to the ice though and there was 6.25 inches of excellent black ice where I was at.

Good luck to everyone heading out this weekend, I would recommend some creepers for the spots of glare ice that the wind has eroded the snow away from.

Grassy point about halfway across towards Krenzer is good. When it is safe, try the 30' water out of third creek. If you are useing emeralds, use the biggest you can get to help keep the dinks away.

Thanks for the tips. Follow the sandbar that extends off Grassy into the middle? Dont want no dinks.actually, I would be satisfied
to bring any perch topside first times out there.

Update:;
Made it out to sodus bay today in the wind storm on the east side all the snow is gone and has been replaced with white ice still about 4" of black tho I did see some snowmobile tracks on the ice ( crazy, still would not trust it but that's just me) was using jigs tipped with some fat heads and emeralds and the bit was slow .....no I mean SLOW fished 7am to 1am and caught 6 dinks and one keeper  :-\  drilled about 30 holes I'm really kind of bumming b/c I just bought my nanook and the wind was so strong when I was messing with my tip downs it blew my clam over spilled two dozen minnows all over the inside and it landed On my auger and cut a five inch slit in the canvas thank god I turned the heater off :-\

Ice conditions at Sodus....wondering how much ice was lost with the recent warm weather and wind. Are they running machines out there? It takes almost 2 hours to get to Sodus, don't want to waste the trip if conditions are bad. Had a buddy that went Friday, said ice was about ten inches, but fishing was slow. Any other reports would be greatly appreciated.

Pike are reportedly being caught between Leroy Island and the east shore.

Talked with several others out there. 2 guys we talked to hadn't caught anything. Another, Father/son team caught just one. Not sure what is up. I have noticed that the water seams stained.

A couple of weeks ago, during the big rain, my cousin and I limited out in 10' of water.  The fish were 9-12" with a few 8 and 6ers that swallowed it and ended up in the bucket.  I have had bad luck in anything deeper than that especially out of third creek.  The fish are there but so are the shad in the deeper water, which is killing the bite.  I have heard the same for I-bay

I question the shad theory. Not saying anyone one is wrong, just that I remember seeing them on the camera last year and still managed to catch a good number of perch. I maybe a combo of things, shad being one of them.

There may be a few things behind it all. The bait fish being one. The roller coaster of weather that we have been having with the temperatures rising and falling along with the pressures.  Maybe a lot of fish r still holding  in the lake. Or maybe the populations r finally seeing the effects of them scummy golbeys.  Dont know 3 yrs ago I would go to a spot on I bay and catch my limit in 2 hours two weeks later couldn't catch one

I also recall 4 seasons ago my dad and I could go out and almost catch our limit every trip, and they were all big 12'' plus like Oneida perch.  That year I caught a 15 1/2 '' perch, it was more like a smallie!  Now the last two seasons, I go out to our honey holes and there's nothing but dinks.  I don't get it.  The last 14 trips over the last two years, according to my journal, have been horrid at best.

There is something going on down there if you ask me. , Sure there are people that are still going out and finding them ( supposedly, I don't trust a whole lot of peoples reports on here concerning catches) but we are not seeing the numbers that we had 4 or 5 years ago when it was good fishing and we had good ice.  This is a serious topic we should keep going.

I have seen walleyes on the camera. Never caught one tho.

There always seems to be a ton of dinkies to go through. (at least for me) but I took that as a sign of healthy perch population. Speaking of the camera, I DO see lots of perch down there of all sizes. Just can't seam to get them to bite! My personal feeling is that it's weather, water clarity, abundance of food. Toss in my bad timing of being there when the bites is off. :'(

Its not just Sodus bay, most of the Big O bays arent doing as well as 4-5 years ago. Some say in the past years its been low water levels. some say its the abundance of shad. Some say its the open water fisherman taking to many, which I don't agree with. Then there is the Gobies. It could be a combination of all and the weather fronts dont help. We were out Saturday and had non stop lookers? but caught very few. whats the DEC say I wonder?

I for one believe the populations aren't what they once were. Its hard to believe that all the fish r gorging them selves all at once. Maybe with the unstable weather there holding in the lake still like 50-60' flo until the weather stabilizes only time will tell. If something doesn't change by ice out it would really be worth the dnr looking into

just my opinion but as we all noticed a decline in perch in sodus, port, fair haven bays. but it seems there is much better perch at least by size in henderson, chamout sackets, and st lawrence river. maybe the perch just followed bait or migrated to the northern waters. maybe it is a better area for them up there now.  just my opinion.

Doubt the gobies are the cause. They have been heavy for years now and it seems, if anything, they have already peaked in population and leveled off.

We snorkel and scuba dive in the St. Lawrence.  In that area we are seeing significantly fewer gobies than 3 or 4 years ago.  Back then most horizontal surfaces were carpeted with gobies.  They are still abundant, but fewer.  I think it may have taken a few years for other fish to learn that gobies make a nice snack.  That's just a theory, of course.  The gobies we  see are always laying on the bottom, over hard surfaces or zebra mussels.  jperch

I would definately agree that the fishing has been different the last 2 yrs from years past but its not because the perch arent down there.  Fished with a fella last weekend that had a camera and he continuously saw fish down there all day he just couldget get them to bite.  I have a flasher and there are numerous times throughout the day where the perch are stacked up sold 5-6 feet off the bottom.  I think its just all part of the cycle.  Lures i crushed the perch on 3-4 years ago arent working as well and you gotta find other stuff that works and switch up your technique.  Once you figure out what they want hold on because the pigs are down there and willing to bite.  Sometimes using a smaller lure doesnt mean your going to catch smaller fish, sometimes the bigger fish want a smaller sized lure.
Just my 2 cents. Goodluck!

First post. I was at Sodus last weekend north east of Eagle Island. There was a line of fisherman which looked like they must be regulars. There were perch caught by most everyone. Most are small, but some guys had 10-15 nice perch. I was just east of the line of fisherman with 15 tip ups out. We got 2 Northerns about 31". They were full of 4" shiners (10 shiners and 4 minnows in one)and a few fat head minnows, but no perch. Does this mean they don't fancy perch? The 3 of us also caught a few nice perch, but not like the guys in the line I mentioned. The ice is 8". The bait at the local shop is small. I think larger bait will do better for the pike.
Thankful to be a member. Best to all.

I might try to get out Friday, and try fishing the East Side for the first time.  It sounds like Eagle and Leroy are good places to try for a mixed bag of perch and pike (set up flags for pike and jig for perch).  Is that right?  Is Connelly's Cove the best place to park for access there, or are there other options.  If I make it out there, I'll be sure to post back our results!

Thanks

Had 14-16" off the coal trussle last weekend. Saw some nice perch brought into Bay Bridge Tackle this afternoon when I was dropping off IPA fliers for next week's tournament. For large shiners, hit up Davenport's on the east side of the bay bridge - they have a ton of large shiners right now!! Don't be affraid to try running some of the smaller shiners on your tip-ups for the larger perch - all of my largest perch from Sodus have come on small shiners on the tip-ups. @)

Just got in from third creek. The usual pressure crack that runs from point to point in about 24' of water is getting sloppy. The quads have been sinking in and bringing up slush. Even my sled slowed down when I went through it. It should be safe for now  but be carefull, you never know.. I did see a few walkers that went all the way out. I don't know how they did it though. A foot of snow out there.

Just an udpdate. Went fishing there 2 day ago. There was over a foot of ice, a lot of shantys and hordes of snowmobiles. The perch were fairly numerous and we didn't have to move once. Many of them were small, however. We didn't catch any jumbos the whole day although we did get a few good sized ones. They were biting spikes on jigs and Swedish Pimples.

Hey guys....are quads still able to maneuver the bay without too much trouble?

How are the snow drifts looking? I'm assuming they have ate away a lot of ice below them.

Talked to an angler today who was out, around 20" of ice everywhere he went near LeRoy Island. Ice won't be an issue this weekend with the exception of pressure cracks. Hopefully this little warm-up will knock-down the snow/slush out there...

1-1.5ft with 6" slush underneath. ::) It didn't look that bad at the south end when I crossed the bay bridge yesterday, but could be deeper in and around the islands.

North of Eagle snow was 10" and 4-5" slush. Hard pull. Fishing was much slower than 3 weeks ago when we were there.
Thanks for the info on the contour map.
