Hunts this year?
« on: Oct 28, 2022, 08:51 AM »
Has anyone heard of bait shops carrying Hunts this year? Didn't seem to be available anywhere last year.

They were few to none near me last year.  I believe it can be attributed to a bad spawn, but who knows!

I was told by bait shops last year they will never receive hunts bait again. I hope it is not true.  :'(

Anyone know the latin name for the species of batifish for Hunts.  They are not popular around me but I'd be happy to ask the local supplier if he knows how to get a hold of some.  He does have a couple properties in NY so perhaps he will recognize the name.

At least here in Vermont, what we call Hunts are Eastern Silvery Minnows (Hybognathus regis). https://vtfishandwildlife.com/sites/fishandwildlife/files/documents/Fish/baitfish/eastern-silvery-minnow.pdf

I've seen them fairly regularly in Lake Champlain-only bait shops.

The bait shop owner that I am friends with said that he buys Hunts that are netted from Lake Champlain, and their availabilty depends on how successful the harvest is, which is always near the same time that the lake freezes, ice cover being the enemy of harvesting them. I was left with the impression from our conversation that it is a " wait and see " situation whether they will be available at his bait shop in Hudson Falls, NY ( 50 miles due north of Albany )

Blue nose are not hunts. Very close and a lot do confuse the 2.
Something about the eyes.

Yep - and they last well too ..... 1 of the guys I fish with doesn't like them because they tangle his lines a few times because they are so active but I'll take that trade .....

It is my understanding that Hunts are Spottail shiners -Notropis hudsonius-  and they did not make the coveted New York State baitfish list.
Thus they cannot be certified; so illegal to be sold as bait in NYS.
When the going gets weird the weird turn pro.
