Spooling a fly reel
« on: Dec 10, 2011, 12:53 PM »
Just received a new Frabil straight line combo. I'm a little confused on how to spool it. The way its set up the line needs to come off the bottom of the reel as opposed to the top. Is this how all fly reels are or am I missing something. It seems like the line should come off the top of the reel more in line with the guides.

The line wants to come off the bottom of the reel ! I fill my fly reels 2/3rds with tip up line, it helps save on line and increases the line pick up ratio some !

Ok thanks guys. I just thought it was a little weird with the line coming off the bottom as opposed to the top.

I actually like my line to come off the top of the spool.  For one thing I'm kind of a clutz and the line coming from the bottom seems to catch onto other things.  It does feel weird trying to spool line up reeling opposite while fighting a fish, but I've gotten so so used to it.

the whole idea is to keep the line going in the same direction it is naturally heading to avoid additional line twist.  Same concepts as loading a spinning reel or a baitcaster properly.
