Sure sign of Spring
« on: Jan 11, 2006, 07:58 AM »
Say it aint so... Just ran up to the gas station to get some smokes, and stepped on a bunch of nightcrawlers that were on the sidewalk!! The Robins can't be to far behind... Can they? Temps forcasted in low 50's for tommorrow!! Doesn't look good for getting back on the ice!! Sorry. Crappie Rob

Crappie rob, I have seen crawlers in the winter on warm wet days when the ground has thawed, and there is alot of rain and moister in the ground. I am not a bird expert, but if the birds are migrating back, then spring is on it's way, some birds can handle some cold weather, but food is the main priority. nature is usually a good indicator as to what to expect.migrations are usually around the same time every year, regardless of temps, unless food is short.
if your not walking on water, then you're not icefishing!

Ok....lets come back down to earth here people! Its January 11th not March 11th. A little early to be forecasting spring isn't it? All we need is an Alberta followed by another and its game on. I can remember many years that central Indiana didn't have safe ice until the latter part of January. We still have late Jan. and all of Feb. and who knows about March. Lets just remain optimistic.....Ok?

It sure feels like spring. I have been fishing the salamonie from the bank for the last week or so and we have been getting a few nice crappie the biggest so far was about 12 in. Most of them was running in the 8 and 9 in. range.

I didn't say I was putting mine away either. Maybe I should, then I'll have to dig it out again. The ice dances aren't working, maybe putting the gear away will speed up the process!! Crappie Rob

The ice dances aren't working,

Rob try a differant tune......or dance. :o Last year was about the same with a major meltdown in the January.  It just could come back, and with a good cold spell might just be safer then. ::)

Hey don't get to worried about not getting back on the ice this year, well get some more ice!! Besides this is probably a blessing that we had a melt down, the ice we had was weird with the freeze thaw freeze and snow. Maybe this time we will get good ice.
