Can someone fix my tent$$$
« on: Feb 08, 2019, 08:23 PM »
I have a jawbone 2-3 person tent that my parents bought me for Christmas 4 years ago....I screwed up like an idiot and snapped one of the rods....I've looked into replacing it but can't find any info on jawbone and how to order a replacement part. I'm not a handyman by ANY meansim a painter by trade and that's as handy as I get ..so tips to fix it are great but I won't be able to. If someone can fix it for me I'll pay them 150$ plus I will give that person one of my Laker heritage traps and a polar trap or jigging rod. I will also pay for any gas it takes to get to me or I can come to you. I live with my gf I'm stratham but can also meet at my folks place in Dover. I'm not trying to be like a Craiglist ad guy right now but I know you all appreciate fishing and the toys involved. The tent means a lot to me since it was my first one I ever had and was bought by my parents. I can't bring myself to take it to the dump. I'd also pay for any materials needed to fix it. Lemme know or pm me. Thanks guys. Happy fishing this weekend and be safe!

Any chance you could post pictures of the break? I might be able to make something work. Is it fiberglass rod or aluminum? Im in Nottingham and could possibly fix it tonight.

You're sounding a little too desperate?  ;)
This ad may be a year or so old, but if you can still find one and have sentimental value with the original, use the new one for parts.....
https://r.search.yahoo.com/_ylt=AwrJ7JPGT15cHtcA731XNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTEyMzdiYTkzBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDQjQwMzdfMQRzZWMDc3I-/RV=2/RE=1549713478/RO=10/RU=https%3a%2f%2ficefishingdeals.com%2f2017%2f08%2f15%2fjawbone-shield-hub-shelter-2-man-71-98%2f/RK=2/RS=juCsOE2IJYAn.AnXUnpIDIPeQYk-

That said, what's the material the "rod" is made of? Diameter and length?
Are the ends round, square, crimped, interlocking?
I'm not far from Dover or Stratham and chances are I could fix you up.
Need the answers to those questions to confirm.

I'll fix it if you paint my house.  ;D  Only kidding. I had two break on a Killzone that I had the company sent me two replacements tried to put them on and broke another one. The popup was a cheapo so that's what you get. Give CD a shot my money is on him. If you are willing to pay $150+ you should put that into a newer higher grade one. I bought a Cabellas one (made by Clam) after the Killzone and have had no problems. The weak point is those rods.

I had the same problem a few years back with a Frabill shelter. I went on their website and sent them a message on the "contact us" part of the site (couldn't find replacement parts online). They sent me a new part for free within a week. Maybe try doing the same?

We'll see?  ;) Thanks for the votes of confidence.
After a little research online, Jawbone's not a domestic outfit, nor have I found any domestic or foreign parts distribution, yet.
Not really a problem. Time to think outside the box!
I used to install Hi tensile fence, where I used many different sizes of FG posts. I still have some inventory and have sources for much more.
Just waiting for Steveo to get home from fishing to give me the dimensions needed. Then, we'll see what we can do....

Thanks Denny, I'm aware.
The dia & length are big factors in how much FG posts bend.
I'm inclined to think the pop up tent makers use available materials, probably to their own specs. NZ hi tensile FG posts have come a long way since they first came out 40 or 50 years ago. Unlike driveway markers, most have UV guard etc..
FWIW, I think this particular pop up has sentimental value to Steveo?
And oh, btw, pretty sure that's the same link I put up earlier. No clue why Yahoo uses temporary links now, or at least for me.
Can you help me with this, Zwiggles?

CD the rods are 1 1/4 in diameter....I had a hell of a day fishing caught 7 bass one was just under 3 and the other was just under 3.5 and about 12 pickerel...the mrs caught the biggest pick..2.7...her dirst fish through the ice..not big enough for the board though....last year I let one go in the same spot I fished today that was 3.5....was hoping to catch him this year at 4.5!

Sounds like you had a nice day.
I'm guessing the diameter is one quarter of one inch (1/4")?
Pretty sure I have four footers, here.
Are those rods enclosed/encased in sleeves in your tent?
I'm a little confused why you don't know how many are "mangled"?

I think it's just one Richard...it's just that it wasn't able to store away very well with broken rod...it doesn't fold up well and was in the shed the last year. It should just be one I've just been so busy the last couple days I gotta take a closer look at it

And yes that's correct on the diameter

"Are those rods enclosed/encased in sleeves in your tent" or no?
When you get a chance, look it over closely and let me know what you need.
If it's a 1/4" x 4' (loose) rod, it should be a very easy fix!

Take it behind the barn...

5/16" fiberglass rods - about $5 for one of those 4' long driveway markers. FWIW a 30 Carbine case just fits as a metal end or sleeve.
To fish or not to fish? That's a stupid question!

Good on you Richard! I’ve got a ton of calibers here but no 30 Carbine brass, I Spose 30/30 would work that’s the smallest .30 cal I have. Neck would be the same diameter still. The brass would not be far off

Actually any .30 can work at the neck, the 30 Carbine is a straight case and will fit tightly neck to head.

5/16" fiberglass rods
esox, I may have read this wrong earlier?
Are you saying that specific tent has 5/16" rods? I doubt that the difference matters in this case, anyway. Familiar with the markers, but I think I have better rods on hand.

Yes I understand I was just thinking smaller the better. The .300 win mag brass would be a little overkill with more room to move around inside past  the neck. The straight wall is a far better choice though I agree for contact at all points. I just don’t have a 30 carbine to give brass to him from

Not for the tent but for the markers. I bought a bunch for a different project and assumed 1/4". When I measured I got 5/16" or .3125, actually better for my project. Don't know what the tent rods are and would expect some difference between mfg and probably a metric measurement  ::). 8mm (.3149") isn't too far off 5/16".

Solid glass rods can be used for all kinds of projects...

My first choice for my project was 3/8" OD brass tube @ .311 ID for about $4 a foot. I found 50 once fired 30 Carbine for $12.50 + $4 S/H. 48 inches of tube woulda been $14 + S/H so I used the cartridge brass. The case heads were a plus because I was gonna be hammering on the rods they were really perfect for my use.
