First ice ride
« on: Dec 29, 2017, 07:36 AM »
Finally made my decision and got a Polaris sportsman 450. I'll have it Wednesday since they didn't have the color I want. Can't wait to have access to more lakes that would take forever to walk across. Any must haves for this machine? I have a winch. I've looked through old posts but they are starting to get outdated, might be some new gear out there.

heated handlebars is a nice feature you'll never regret doing.
chains are great if you doing any heavy towing .
You mentioned you had a winch , but do you have any thing to anchor it to on a lake ?
Like a ice screw or ice angel, or if you want simple a piece of wood twice as wide as your auger.

A canoe anchor works to anchor a winch cable below the ice.

Why do you want to anchor your atv on the ice?  Just curious.  I put a front and rear basket on my atv, windshield, and mounted rodholders to the baskets for hauling rods.

I always carry a short length of steel fence post (12"-14" long) with a steel loop in the middle to tie too, to put down in a  drilled ice hole.  I keep one in my ATV and snowmobile to anchor the machine when pulling someone else out of a bind, or something to pull too if I get stuck in the slush/snow.  Late last spring a friend broke through the ice with the front end of his ATV when going over an ice ridge, I anchored the rear of my machine and winched him out, without the anchor my machine would have been the one being winched, not his.

i've used anything we could find, now i carry a 20" piece of a old hockey stick, only because my auger is a 10".

A canoe anchor has flukes that fall to the open position when you release them and it has an eye on the bottom that lets you pull the bottom up first which lets the flukes close against the shaft. You drill a hole, drop the anchor down the hole, winch your self out, drop the anchor down a bit and pull it up using the rope attached to the bottom eye. They are compact so they don't take up much space and are inexpensive.
