Double Echo /bottom composition technique.
« on: Nov 17, 2016, 09:24 AM »
Get more out of your Flashers ...a change in bottom composition could be key to getting on fish ...set your units to normal and manual mode as well as to twice the known depth ...then read the second or some times third echo to determine bottom composition ...if that second echo mark is a defined "red" mark = hard ...if the second mark has a trailing edge green/yellow =softer bottom

about a minute into video the double echo approach is explained.

That's interesting.  Have you done it with other brands other than Vexilar?

I haven't tried it ...heard and read about it last season ...but last season being what it was didn't put it to use . It should work for other flashers as well ..I came across it while researching for perch ...which tend to  like the sticky bottom ...so if you can locate the muddy/sticky bottom on the flat...you up your catch rate ...the muddy sticky bottom holds the insect larva/blood worms etc...know preferred forage for perch .

You can also drop a depthfinder weight down to the bottom and pull it back up. If you have a sticky bottom there will be mud stuck to the bottom of the weight. Kind of like your anchor in summer.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

Exactly ....not much of a tip up guy now ...but do use tip downs quite often and have felt the sticky/muddy bottom with my sounder in the past .

As a proofing of this, last year on a known mud bottom I hammered my tungsten off the bottom, saw a plume on my chart on zoom mode, and it drew over a perch every time to grab the jig. If I didnt bounce it they would take their sweet time hitting the jig. Somebody did a walleye video on youtube showing this on a camera as well.
