Yep no stripers north of the dam at the Holyoke/Chicopee city line. Power company lifts a lot of shad an occasional salmon.

I caught a bunch of eels this year on the Winooski. They are definitely making a comeback.

Tench are everywhere at this point. And a hell of a lot of fun when you can get them to take something!

As far as rare fish in Vermont that you can target- quillback and mooneye would be on the top of my list. Not easy to find...  Of course I know a lot of folks who would love to find a copper redhorse in Lake Champlain... I may have caught one this spring but I'm not entirely sure.

Rarest fish would be a Sunapee Trout/Arctic Char rumored to be still around a couple of NEK lakes.
They were common 120 years ago prior to stocking lake trout.

So striper fishing in Vermont is going to be a thing?

Last year I watch Holyoke lift about 20 stripers over the dam with shad being caught in Vermont last spring I know there in there. Nobody is targeting the ew and far between though. All bass were school is size 17 inches max

The Vermont Fish and Wildlife web page has striped bass listed as a Vermont fish.

Dave are u sure on that. Im thinking your thinking a Mud Puppy. If thats the case, its not a fish, its a large salamander that lives in vermont, and a lot of them in lake champlain.

Where'd you hear that they were once in NEK lakes? I know that they are in one or two lakes in Northern Maine, and of course Sunappe in NH, but have never heard they were once in Vermont. I'd love to learn more.

Opening weekend last year in NEK we caught 25 lakers. 23 were plain jane classic colored fish 2 were very different
possibly spawning colors but body shape was more rounded and a lot more red than typical orange you would
see on a normal spawning laker. I researched an sure enough char/Sunapee trout were present prior to lake trout
being stocked. Lake trout are a char species as are brook trout, arctic char, dolly varden, quebec red etc.
I am 100% sure the 2 odd fish we caught were lake trout but have wondered if there was a subspecies etc.
One fish we immediately threw back the other was table fare. Oh well, I've talked with a two state biologists who
said they have never gilled netted a char on that lake.

Orange fish in prior post is either a spawning arctic char or dolly varden they are tough to distinguish.

From 1792- before all the dams and whatnot prevented migration

Yeah Dave they are pretty cool. Largest salamander species I know of in vermont..  I ran maintenance at the Echo aquarium in burlington, we had two live specimens on display. Every now and then someone from the local beachs would find one and bring it to us wondering what it was.  Every now and then at work / camp abnaki we will find them along the shoreline in the Gut. pretty neat.

No Golden / Sunapee trout in N/E VT? Really. Like there were no coyotes, no buzzards, no pine martins,  no wolves, no catamounts, no lynx. I suppose they're not there 'till the state says they are!
